You're so great when it comes to talk about, analyze or play some Maiden. I'd love you to play their recent tunes but with the style and sound of the 80's, including a younger Bruce!
I can understand why Janick gets chewed up often by a lot of the traditional Maiden's fans, they were used to the sound of Murray-Smith for years and when Janick joined Maiden the sound wasn't exactly the same, but give Janick a break, thanks to him (and the rest of the band of course) the band stayed together, and even though those weren't the best years for Maiden, eventually they all came back together as a band.😎🤟
This seems to be a thing Janick does on a lot of songs - live and on records - you can really hear it on The Red and the Black. He'll play an arpeggiated line under Adrian's solo. Sometimes it is a bit distracting... but at least it's better than when he would double Adrian's solo like he used to do on some of the earlier live videos of Wasted Years. That sounded terrible to me since their soloing styles are so different.
I don't like those parts either. The solo on Isle of Avalon gets very messy due to that kind of thing. This isn't an example of that, however, as it's just a layer behind the chords - you can hear it on the original recording as well.
It sounds like Janick is copying the guitar synth/keyboard background accompaniment you hear on the original album track behind the solo. It actually sounds pretty good.
It's something you can kind of hear in the album version although on the album version it's a very clean almost acoustic tone. It's always sounded like they had Dave playing the chords, Adrian the solo and then they mixed in very subtle individual chord notes very similar to what Janek plays here.
I bet it sounded a bit better live than through a shitty phone mic. It's why I don't watch shows filmed by fans, just not good. Ive seen them live up front and it all sounds full and killer when you're there.
Very true. I recorded my bands gig recently, and the go pro (placed at the mixing deak straight down from the middle of the stage) mic picked up the frequencies from my amp really good while the other guitar player’s guitar was barely audible. From other videos of the same gig it is much more even in balance.
I don't watch them because I don't want to encourage them. If I pay hundreds to see a band play live I don't want a bunch of ultra bright screens in my way. The sole exception to this is Chappell Roan's band playing Barracuda earlier this week, they fkn slayed it
Janick's guitar does not have power in most of the 80's songs, so he is free to dance around and entertain the crowd. It's perfectly fine. The band does not want to mess the original versions of those songs.
for real..I mean he's been in the band for over 30 years now? and even if I didn't like him or was more influenced by Dave or Adrian with my own playing , I'd just accept it and move on. Maiden's been proving themselves a band thriving on being genuinely good at what they do, with their music constantly maturing since BNW and if Janick's here to stay, there has to be a reason.
Janick Rules. He is THE reason maiden kept going when Bruce left them flat on their heads. He has written a huge amount of maiden classics and has been in the band longer than Adrian. Adrian smith joined 81 left in 90. 9 years. Came back 2,000. 24+9 =33 years total. Jan joined up in 90. So roughly a year longer.
They are $600 because the show is basically sold out (and has been for months). The only tickets left are re-sales and a couple dozen platinum tickets they held back until a couple weeks ago. You should have picked tickets up a year ago when they went on sale. I paid about $130 for mine, which is about average for half decent seats for a big name act.
I just cannot understand the hate for Janick. His solos on No Prayer and fear of the Dark are awesome. The solos on weekend warrior and afraid to shoot strangers just brilliant. He's more of a feel player live. I think he tends to just go with it which works sometimes but not always. But he's never boring.
The people that hate him are Adrian fanatics. They hate that he is a better guitar player. They hate that he's more exciting to watch live. They hate that he has more fun on stage. They hate that he's not a diva. They hate that he didn't wipe his ass on the fans and storm off in a temper tantrum. They hate that Dave likes him better. F Adrian.
So what? It’s a melody part which makes up a part of the song. Obviously, it’s not a mixed audio, so it may sound “odd” to some - sounds like a perfectly in tune melody line to me … after all, isn’t that what classic Maiden tracks are all about ?
Taking my 18 and 16 year old boys to Maiden this saturday. I haven't seen them since 7th Son tour in 1988... BTW what p/u's are do you have in your strat?
Man, Adrian really can't catch a break on this one. Whether it's Bruce talking or Janick playing, this majestic of a solo must be played with no interruptions. All fans deserve to listen clearly to it, and the band should respect that. You'll never see Adrian nor Dave playing over Janicks solos on Blood Brothers, for instance.
Janick always fuck up the old maiden songs like 11:58 solo, I fucking tired of hear him playing over adrian solos, he is way below Adrian and Dave level
Especially with regard to Bruce yapping over some of Adrian’s solos I agree with this comment. This is such a beautiful solo, there’s no need for theatrics and verbalizations during the brief period of time which it is performed. For me, it’s the same deal when there’s a video of a performance and instead of showing the person playing the solo they’re showing another member of the band just messing around.
@@JuanPiVlokWhy don't you go and listen to the live version maiden released not so long ago....Janick is doing it there but it sits perfectly in the background. Stop being such a buthurt dweeb
This is exactly why the trio is my favorite instead of either duo. Also, Dave and Janick’s chemistry is just as good as Adrian’s. When it was just them two, they were so energetic and happy looking. Of course we still see it from Dave but not as much as before, he seems like a bit of a mediator between energy and calm.
Do people really not understand that where the guy recording is standing, especially when that close, is going to make a massive difference? Janick rules!
Can we talk about Steve? I just saw them in L.A. and i felt the bass needed to be louder. I couldn't really hear him stand out when he goes higher or does some fills. Feels like he is playing subdued now. On the slow bass lines with melodies, he sounded fine , but i just feel like he wasn't standing out. At least not to me. Anyone else feel this way?
Yeah... It's like you pointed out, front row it's never a good spot to catch the best sound mix. I alway find his sound "harsh", and lacking definition when compared to Dave's and Adrian's, especially during rhythm, and as a "first rows" type guy, that like to be as close as possible to hai favourite band, and huge that's why i always go to the other side. Not a Jannick "hater", it's just a matter of preference on my part, bu i do have to highlit his "lead" on ending of this song live.
Whats with the hate for Janick I really dont understand. This is the beauty of going to see concerts live. They improvise or try to do something different sometimes. In this case, most likely not even Janicks fault his guitar was way too loud so you can blame it on his tech. I love Janick he gives such great energy to the crowd and by throwing his guitar its really fun to watch haha.
It's because he ruined the sound of one of the all time great bands, AND prances around up staging one of the best frontmen as well as usurping Steve Harris' stage presence. Those adolescent antics are fine for a KISS crowd but lovers of classic Maiden are more sophisticated. Gers is a mediocre guitar player who adds nothing other than cluttering the sound. He doesn't even sing and they could use another voice. That's why.
@@NelsonMontana1234 Go home. If Blood Brothers solo is mediocre for you, you are just a hater that hate him for childish reasons. Go to watch Kerry King.

As always, Nico, great break down and very informative. The layering that makes Maiden - MAIDEN.. I had laugh at your comment, you tone, gross. nothing you do is gross....keep up the great work.
I don't know what the issue people have with this and Janick is, if you listen to the official live from last year, it sits really well in the mix and adds a tiny bit of flavor to an otherwise bland rhythm. Janick may have his moments when he does something crazy shreddy and weird, but he's an amazing songwriter and player. Also thanks for the vid! I never noticed this part before and I actually think its better than the original. Can't wait to see it live TOMORROW!!!!!!
So-called idiots? The dude acts like a complete moron on stage, and there is NO WAY the sound guy doesn't turn his sound off a significant % of the time. You can't do what he does and have proper notes come out. If he only stopped prancing, gesturing towards his guitar like it's some sort of voodoo doll, it would be a start.
Have you ever played on stage with a loud PA? If the backline would be enough for that, the monitors would not be invented at all :) Also, loud enough backline would override the main mix for the guys in the front row the very same way.
@@carbofos9979 I have played large stages. Dial your amp that you can hear yourself and ask other instruments/vocals to your monitor. That has been the basic rule from soundtechs. Of course this only applies if you are using real amps and not Nintendo's plugged to FOH.
@@VSL229 If your amp is loud enough to be heard up to the very edge of the stage, where the PA and reflections from the room come loudest, guess what? Anyone standing in the front row and in the audio beam of your backline is going to hear an added extra of you. It is inevitable. Again, as I said, anyone who is choosing to be in the front row does it at cost of having the compromised sound ( even if the entire band is using in-ears). Anyway it is just one of many incoveniences and risks of beeing in a front row. Oh, and I need to add that human ears and body are picking sound very different from the phone mic. The guys certainly had an extra of Janick, but how did they actually perceive that - this is a question.
@@VSL229 P.S. Maiden's soundman Ken "Pooch" Van Druten said in the interview that as all of three guitars are of similar tone (Strat + Marshall mostly) he needs to separate via the panning. So Jan's guitar is pretty far right and Dave is left (Adrian is obviously in the pan center). And only their solos are switched to the center, when the time comes. This adds to being too close to the stage.
Janick is messing around way too much and not focusing enough on his playing. Who cares if he can spin around like a ballerina or do splits on a monitor? He has good chops and cool musical ideas but I think his running around takes away more than it adds to the show.
The C arpeggio should have a sharp 4th to stay in key (F# not F natural) If anyone knows Yanick please let him know. I am available for online lessons. 🤘
That more "in key" #4th sound was brought into the culture by Lynch and also Ratt, then proliferated to some extent, but didn't really make it into the "more Metal" sounding bands that stayed with the Sabbath inventions. Different strokes for different sub-genres.
He didn't mess it up, it's part of the accompaniment on the album version 😅 As I mentioned in the video, it only sounds like it clashes a bit because you hear his guitar over everything else due to the recording taking place very close to his monitor.
Honestly. I never liked Janic in Maiden. Why does he plays a solo on top of Adrian’s solos? Triads? Why not just the chords that go in the song? Does he always have to be present when Adrian is soloing by laying anything on top of an Adrian solo? His dances! Honestly I don’t hate the guy, I just see he wants the spot light, this dude belongs in a hair band, Motley Crue needs a guitarist! He can do his dance right there!!
I completely agree! Never cared for him! His dancing and always holding the guitar vertical playing just drives me crazy! Going to see them in November and I purposely got tickets on Adrian’s side of the stage just so it limits me seeing janic
Because triads are chords and because that's the kind of thing people do to add layers to parts. The Somewhere in Time album is full of stuff like that - including this song because what Janick is playing is just what's on the original version.
What on earth is he doing, frankly, on any live Maiden track? Leaping about like a demented leprechaun, whipping his guitar with the cable and waving his hands over the neck like a bad magician at a kids' party.
There are not reason to be a copycat of Adrian. I prefer an original guitar player than a one who plays note by note trying to imitate another musician.
El problema de janick, es que siempre toca lo mismos solos o siempre tiene que hacer algo inspirado en blackmore, llega a ser cansador porque no varia mucho, hay solos muy buenos en los álbumes pero en vivo... Deja mucho que desear

The sole exception to this is Chappell Roan's band playing Barracuda earlier this week, they fkn slayed it
Janice's has some sweet stage moves.
Where are you playing with your cover band? It would be cool to see you play live
😂 listening to live video and can't stop hearing it
i'd love to see you live! please come to europe at some point!
Thank you so much!! I'd love to play there someday but unfortunately, we're not a touring band.
Janick's guitar does not have power in most of the 80's songs, so he is free to dance around and entertain the crowd. It's perfectly fine. The band does not want to mess the original versions of those songs.
To play in your own style it not mean mess it.
Simple, but so beautiful. Very Rory of him.
The way he plays it, yes!
The amount of janick hate is ridiculous, some of the best songs maiden have done since getting back with Bruce are his
Too many people can't understand that
for real..I mean he's been in the band for over 30 years now? and even if I didn't like him or was more influenced by Dave or Adrian with my own playing , I'd just accept it and move on. Maiden's been proving themselves a band thriving on being genuinely good at what they do, with their music constantly maturing since BNW and if Janick's here to stay, there has to be a reason.
I liked your playing..your band sounds good too🤘🎵🎸😊
I really like what he is playing. I am really laughing about all comments here again saying Gers shouldn't be in the band😂
For some people he is still "the new one"
I’m glad this guy exists.
Actually the tone from your monitor was pretty good.
Janick does (plays) something similar in Rock in Rio during the last chorus in Dream of Mirrors... I hope not to be wrong.
Long live Janick Gers!
It has been a nice touch from Janick to come up with this triad progression instead of playing the same chords with Dave.
It is a nice touch, indeed, but Jan didn't come up with it. It's in the original recording. 😊
Hey Nico...are you going to see them here in Toronto in a few weeks? I'd love to, but man, the tickets are about 600 at least!
E to D to C you say?
I just cannot understand the hate for Janick. His solos on No Prayer and fear of the Dark are awesome. The solos on weekend warrior and afraid to shoot strangers just brilliant. He's more of a feel player live. I think he tends to just go with it which works sometimes but not always. But he's never boring.
He is an amazing guitarist. A lot Bitter than anyone gives him credit for .
Gates of Tomorrow, Thin Line btw Love and Hate, etc
Only stupid people don’t like Janick Gers!

F Adrian.
The sample video of Janick 0:58 wasn't recorded in Las Vegas, it was recorded in Chula Vista. I should know, I recorded it 😂
Oooops! My bad. 😅🙏
Great looking footage either way! 🤜🤛
@@LicksOfTheBeast thanks licks! I'll be at the barrier in Salt Lake (Oct 18th), let me know if I can get you any specific footage/solos up close

@@RGK93 since that'll be my 10th Future Past show, I think I'll record a few songs for posterity, thanks 🤣
So what? It’s a melody part which makes up a part of the song. Obviously, it’s not a mixed audio, so it may sound “odd” to some - sounds like a perfectly in tune melody line to me … after all, isn’t that what classic Maiden tracks are all about ?
Sorry I was watching Steve😊
Taking my 18 and 16 year old boys to Maiden this saturday. I haven't seen them since 7th Son tour in 1988... BTW what p/u's are do you have in your strat?
That's so awesome and you're gonna have an amazing time!
The bridge and neck pickups are both JB Jrs. - same as what Janick uses 🙂
Janicks solos on Blood Brothers? As in plural?
Janick always fuck up the old maiden songs like 11:58 solo, I fucking tired of hear him playing over adrian solos, he is way below Adrian and Dave level
Did you forget that this band has rehearsed the songs and decide how they are gonna play each part of the songs?
Especially with regard to Bruce yapping over some of Adrian’s solos I agree with this comment. This is such a beautiful solo, there’s no need for theatrics and verbalizations during the brief period of time which it is performed.
For me, it’s the same deal when there’s a video of a performance and instead of showing the person playing the solo they’re showing another member of the band just messing around.
@@JuanPiVlokWhy don't you go and listen to the live version maiden released not so long ago....Janick is doing it there but it sits perfectly in the background.
Stop being such a buthurt dweeb
Janick going for a Def Leppard style part - like it!
Amazing
So very Blackmore!
Show us your live gear.
Do people really not understand that where the guy recording is standing, especially when that close, is going to make a massive difference? Janick rules!
I think it sounds good
he is being a stranger in a non strange band
Janick best composers
Long live Janick Gers!
There's three guitars and it's gonna be harder for him to cut through. Specially on modern maiden songs where he just plays root note these days
We love Janick

Besides jumping around like a goofball?
Hate on Janick…. Booooooring. He’s great.
🤘🤘🤘
I don't know what the issue people have with this and Janick is, if you listen to the official live from last year, it sits really well in the mix and adds a tiny bit of flavor to an otherwise bland rhythm. Janick may have his moments when he does something crazy shreddy and weird, but he's an amazing songwriter and player.
Also thanks for the vid! I never noticed this part before and I actually think its better than the original.
Can't wait to see it live TOMORROW!!!!!!
Awesome! Enjoy the show and have a great time! 🤘🤘

I hate the shit that he gets from the so called idiot Iron Maiden fans. I think that he's great
So-called idiots? The dude acts like a complete moron on stage, and there is NO WAY the sound guy doesn't turn his sound off a significant % of the time. You can't do what he does and have proper notes come out. If he only stopped prancing, gesturing towards his guitar like it's some sort of voodoo doll, it would be a start.
@@hugolafhugolafhe moves on stage, stop the whining ffs. Bruce is constantly prancing about and no one gives a shit

Nice !!!
Most of the guys I know in the area around here are making the switch to in ears because of stage monitoring issues.
You should dial your backline so that you hear yourself from there not from monitor.
Have you ever played on stage with a loud PA? If the backline would be enough for that, the monitors would not be invented at all :)
Also, loud enough backline would override the main mix for the guys in the front row the very same way.
@@carbofos9979 My amp is on my left side facing to center stage and 2-3 meters from me. People in front row wont hear a thing from it.
One thing you never want..... Janick playing over Adrian !!!
😉👍
Janick is messing around way too much and not focusing enough on his playing. Who cares if he can spin around like a ballerina or do splits on a monitor? He has good chops and cool musical ideas but I think his running around takes away more than it adds to the show.
So you want someone that just stands there with zero energy.. what is wrong with people... So dumb
The C arpeggio should have a sharp 4th to stay in key (F# not F natural) If anyone knows Yanick please let him know. I am available for online lessons. 🤘
@@MrUmandMrEr So borrowed chords, chromaticism, and accidentals aren't on the curriculum? 🤣
That more "in key" #4th sound was brought into the culture by Lynch and also Ratt, then proliferated to some extent, but didn't really make it into the "more Metal" sounding bands that stayed with the Sabbath inventions.
Different strokes for different sub-genres.
Sweet Janick o mine
Yup. Same kinda thing.
He really DID not need to mess THIS song up too!
He didn't mess it up, it's part of the accompaniment on the album version 😅 As I mentioned in the video, it only sounds like it clashes a bit because you hear his guitar over everything else due to the recording taking place very close to his monitor.
@@mrchow5047 What part of my reply do you disagree with? 🤔
The real question is, why is Janick Gers still in the band?
Cause this th-cam.com/video/7KV56kwxiHg/w-d-xo.html
Going to see them in November and I purposely got tickets on Adrian’s side of the stage just so it limits me seeing janic
yeah...hate on a guy for having a great time playing music. wtf. Gers rules and he is beyond and motley crue guitarist. what a stupid take.
Because triads are chords and because that's the kind of thing people do to add layers to parts.
The Somewhere in Time album is full of stuff like that - including this song because what Janick is playing is just what's on the original version.
Where is the manual that says how you can behave in a band?
@@wlmrr you can stand on your head a play for all I care! Don’t mean I got to like it 🤷♂️

El problema de janick, es que siempre toca lo mismos solos o siempre tiene que hacer algo inspirado en blackmore, llega a ser cansador porque no varia mucho, hay solos muy buenos en los álbumes pero en vivo... Deja mucho que desear
