You remain the KING of TH-cam. Always articulate, informative, professional, and unbiased in your reviews. Enjoyed this review. Own the Tamron 70-200 g2 for my Nikon d500 thanks to your previous Tamron g2 review. Keep up the great work.
I love watching your reviews, Dustin. You sold me on the Sigma Sport. The fact that I can't help but think I'm watching Steve Carrell deliver your reviews has been ongoing even to this day. But that's my problem .
I am using this lens since 6 weeks with a 5D4 and I am absolutely happy with it so far. Downside is the weight and the fact that the correction profile is needed to correct the distortion. Great reviews Dustin, well done! Big hug from Berlin 🤗👍👌
Your reviews are the best! Professional production with an easy way of communicating and sharing your thoughts and perspectives of the reviewed and tested product. Personally, I purchased the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2 for my Nikon d500 after watching your review. Happy with no regrets. Keep up the excellent work!
You may well be the best reviewer in the land, and I abhor hyperbole. Great review. I already own the Tamron G2, but it sounds as if Sigma is taking a much needed turn for the better.
Thanks for the complete review, as always very detailed and complete! :) I'll probably go for the Tamron, I don't see this many advantages in the added weight and bulk, and since I already own the 24-70 G2, 100-400 and the Tap-in console, I won't have to buy any new accessories if I go with the Tamron. I really think that with this many options of great lenses at more affordable prices, it's easier than ever to build a good lens collection in this day and age.
You do the best reviews of all the channels here on YT, hands down 👍👍 this lens will be in my camera bag when I'm off to South Africa again in November, together with the 60-600 that I'm also buying, can't wait to utilize them down there!
GREAT video. Love your delivery. Love the information you provide. Just because I am into camera gear videos does not mean I am not going to wake up early tomorrow to go out shooting.
They are all good lenses with different strengths. In my coverage of these lenses I break down what I consider the strengths and weaknesses. Pick the one whose strengths fit your shooting style and whose weaknesses you can live with.
Which one would be your preference? The Canon 70 to 200 F2.8 L Series version 2 or the Sigma Sport 70-200? Because right now they're pretty much in the same price range if I got the Canon used in mint condition... the reason I ask is because when I was researching the 24-70 s and this category the sigma was showing a lot of softness compared to the Canon. Right now I'm shooting on the Canon EOS R with a couple prime lenses can the 24 to 105 F4.. I would love to be able to get the RF lenses but they are just too far out of my budget. I work full-time as a manager and do photography on the side for the time being. I just built my own home studio and have spent quite a bit of money. My goal is to pick up a 24-70 and a 70-200 for around $2,000 for both even if they're used.. on Adorama I can get Mint Condition used lenses in the Canon brand L series or I can get the new Sigma for both lenses for around $2,200 for each set. I'm torn because the Canon Glassell series is great but coming from a Canon 80d and using the sigma art 1835 and the 50 to 100 I really like the Sigma Art stuff.. but when I watch TH-cam videos like I said I keep seeing softness in the Sigma lenses for the full frame compared to the Canon. I just wondered what your take is on this. Because I do value your opinion
Working with your numbers, I would probably go with the Canon options. The Canon 24-70 is definitely better, and the 70-200 Sport (while excellent) is bigger and heavier than the Canon version.
Dustin, what a great review sir! Very detailed and informative as always, LOVE your reviews. That snow in the background is so soothing :) I already own the tamron 70-200 G2 and use it primarily for landscape which left me with very pleasing images from my recent trip into cold -15 regions near the mountains. I most likely will still get the sigma 70-200 2.8 sport maybe bit later because I am a darn sigma addict already can't help it (the wife loves sigma too, esp the 105! haha). I was very pleased to hear about the focus breathing, 200mm performance and other minor great things about it. I guess there is nothing too bad about owning two 70-200 2.8 lenses...maybe I can get the wife finally into some photography and give her the tamron hah. I think I need to test this sigma in person before I consider buying it just like how I always do; test in person, evaluate images, go home and have a nice cup of tea thinking about it and then end up buying it darn it! Anyhow I've been following you for a long time now and my lens collection grew with wise decisions I made thanks to you so thank you.
I own a Canon 70-200 f2.8 for fourteen years and after see and read a lot of reviews from different sources with any doubt this Sigma lens was the right choice not only because the price but the performance and the quality of the images as well. Thanks for the review and for let me know the lens is on sale $999.00 (back in may)
@@DustinAbbottTWI thx, but i wonder which lense is is faster autofocus for sports. Sigma, Tamron or Canon? Looking for fastest and most precise focus between Sigma or Tamron. And planning not use tele adapters
Hey Dustin I’m considering this lens vs the Tamron G2. If image quality is the top priority would you say the sigma edges out the tamron. Also if I consider buying a 2x teleconvert which combo would work best (canon, sigma, or tamron). If u haven’t tested all the tc combos, theoretically would a tc & 70-200 combo be better than the sigma/tamron 150-600 image quality wise? I know focus wise it will take a hit. Also apparently the sigma 150-600 contemporary is better than the sport version and tamron g2 version.
I would say that the Sigma is very slightly better than the G2, yes. I haven't tested many of the 2x TCs (I'm often not a fan), but I would definitely say you would see better focus results with a bare lens (like the 150-600) than using a 2x TC.
I like the concept of making a quality lens like this, but my back already complains about the weight of regular 70-200 lenses, so I won't be picking up one that is larger and heavier.
As a father of 4-years-old boy, I was a bit scared to see the Tamron lens standing close to the edge of table at around 03:00, and you waving your hands emotionally in close proximity! :-)
Excuse me Sr. Since Nikon D850 does not have an AA filter like Canon does, would you say the Sigma would provide even better results? And also, would you say this Sigma is sharper than the Canon 70-200 III if used with a Nikon D850?
First off great video! What are your thoughts on buying a lens for a newer photographer when trying to decide between the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM vs. Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 sport. My wife plans to use it primarily for video footage of our son playing lacrosse, but plans to use it for photos as well. The price point difference between the two appears to be around $600 to $800. Based on my research the sport has weather sealing and 11 aperture blades vs 9 blades on the EX, along with some other minor differences (lens length and diameter). Wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra money on the sport version as it would be primarily for sports. We plan on pairing it with a Canon EOS R10. Thanks for your input in advance!
If you plan to use it in a high speed tracking situation, going for the Sport lens probably makes sense. Weather sealing is important, yes, but probably more important is the focus speed.
Another great review series. Very informative for anyone in the market for any 70-200 F/2.8. On a related note: both Tamron and Sigma recently cut prices on their 150-600 zooms. Does this signal G2 releases on the horizon? Thanks.
The Sigma lens is currently on sale for $50 cheaper than the Tamron at $1250. I want to purchase one of these lenses but my issue is weight and focus breathing. I’ve tried both of these lenses out and the sigma was just so massive but produced wonderful results. The Tamron felt sleeker and easier to handle, but focus breathing was an issue. What would your recommendation be.
Fantastic review and comparison, thanks so much! Question: in your summary you suggest that the Sigma is a much better choice for Sony bodies - did I hear that correctly? If yes, please explain. Sorry if I misunderstood.
It is the best non-Sony lens to adapt to Sony bodies due to working very well with the MC-11. Other third party 70-200s from Canon or Tamron don't work nearly as well.
Thanks for your reply Dustin… Till now I couldn’t find one. I’m asking because I have a Canon 5d classic and a 7D, but I also have a Nikon D200 and D700. I found a good used lens with EF mount at €700 which is half price than new and I think that I will go for it. Is it worth it at that price?
Hi Mister Abott, At first, you're so easy to reed on your website, easy to anderstand and fellow on video. :) I live in France, between Bordeaux and Cognac. I read your reviews for a while, Every time great reviews ! At first, it semes that you are an human person, in the good way. Yesterday I bought the Sigma in Nikon mount (D750), my reseller sell of the Tamron ad bad price and don't have any Nikon mont fort test : business for rules, newer is better, burning what we loved yesterday... Till today, I use an old 80-200-D-AFD : there is nothing to compare with the Sigma : resolution at f2,8, loca, AF speed, accuracy and stabilisation (1/15s at 200mm/standard is ok in kitchen at night, under ambiant light). Whoaw it's amazing ! I suspected it had progressed but not so much. The Sigma t's heavy, more than my old 80-200 AFD Nikkor lens. Not especialy feel heavier in the first time, but i think I should do some muscles exercices... I confirm that tripod collar is too much when you do not need it... Building quality is outstanding, it smells indestructible and infinitesimal finish détails are great. The lens out of the box ont the D750 seems to give excellent sharpness results all along the range at f2.8. Stopping down, it's ultra razor shape. No or almost mechanical noise, AF speed is ok on a motobicycle or cars roling in town at 6 m (+/- 18 feet/200mm). Bokeh is smooth, color rendering is well ballenced (concrete blocks wall dont pull à bit magenta like your test), good contrast even at F2,8 for a good relief rendering. I will buy the usb dock for setting C1/C2 and barrel button at first time. For the moment i'm very happy with this new lens. Thanks mister Abbott for the big job you've done for us with this lens (and all the other lens). PS : excuse me for my scholastic english, i lack some practice... :)
Hi Dustin, Many thanks for the great Review. I have a Question. Whitch would you think is the best choice for a Nikon Crop User, the Tamron or the Sigma? Is maybe the extra wide of the Tamron an important fact because the Crop? Or is the fact that the Sigma gets better quality with the 1.4 converter more important than I think that is comparable to the 1.5 Crop of the Nikon? I need help for my decision whitch I should buy.
I haven’t tested either on a Nikon crop, but the Sigma may give a little better image quality but the Tamron will weigh less (thus balance better) and has better VC/VR.
What if you need the lens repaired? Does Sigma have a department for repairs similar to Canon if you need to have the lens calibrated or repaired in anyway? With a lens this expensive and this large you really want to know that you can get it repaired if something happens to it?
I have the Sony A7III, do I wait for Tamron to release the 70-200mm F2.8 version of their 28-75mm or just buy the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 Sport now? I have the Canon version of the USB dock and the MC-11.
I guess it depends on how important weight is to you. I’ve personally already got a 70-200 (for Canon), so I’m playing wait-and-see myself, as I would like a 70-200 for my Sony cameras.
Dustin Abbott I’m assuming as a pro you do not like to use adapters. As an extreme amateur/beginner I am beginning to see the light on not adapting lenses. This year I started, probably like most, and didn’t want to shell out a chunk of change until I knew I was going to stick with it. I now know I’m going to stick with it so I’ve only been buying FF glass for my m6 2 and I am regretting not spending a little more for a FF body. Live and learn. Keep up the good work.
Dustin, you’ve certainly become my (and many others) GOTO SOURCE for lens reviews. Greatly appreciate the depth and work you put into these reviews. I’ve owned a Tamron 70-200 VC since it came out in ‘12 (I believe). Great lens for my high school sports - basketball, football and (nighttime Lacrosse). As I generally shoot at 200mm, focus breathing isn’t an issue at the distances I shoot at. Focus speed on the other hand, is at times. I use a Canon 7D MK II for sports and a 6D for everything else. I have a few global series Sigmas and love them - even my 18-35 1.8 WHEN it wants to focus correctly! 😉 I use a sling and never a monopod on the sidelines as you miss too many shots. I PAY for lugging the weight around - CHIROPRACTOR! As much as I’d love to give a go with the new SIG, the weight scares me. Two questions - how does the focus speed compare with the Tamron G2 and subsequently compared to my VC G1? Lastly, are either aforementioned lenses enough to have me dump my pristine G1 (at a huge loss) on EBay in lieu of either? Thanks Rev!
I would say that G2 is probably the faster in an absolute sense, but by a very, very small margin. It’s focus performance is very close to the speed of Canon
Thank you. Very good as always. I can't be more happier with mine and actually thankful for having to by MC11 (I shoot with Sony) as I now have an option to use it with other non native lenses that I can pick up for a bargain price.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for review. Great as always! I am glad for MC-11 but: 1. Tamron + MC-11 = 1720 g and Sigma = 1805+220 =2025 !!!. Uff... 2. Is MC-11 sealed - I guess NO. 3. Extra console for firmware upgrade in both cases ( 28-70 goes via Sony body) My hope is that Tamron for Sony will come. Lighter, cheaper in total, smaller, better AF ...
Hey Dustin, recently i bought an A7iii with the sigma MC11. Is the MC11 with this lens giving you same results as mounting the 70-200 on a canon camera?I'm afraid of issues to be honest like hunting or misfocus. Something else is that i find the new Sigma 24-70 2.8 ART cheaper on canon mount than Sony mount so i was considering buying both Canon mount if the adapter works well because i'm using also cinema camera that has EF mount. any idea?
If you continue to use both systems, it isn't a bad idea to invest in the EF version of lenses. Focus isn't quite native in some situations, but is typically very, very good.
I have had this lens now for a couple of sporting events. It is without question an outstanding lens. Much of my photography is fast moving subjects moving through head on depth of fields and this lens does not miss a beat. It sits on my 1DX and the only issues I have had are those that were operator based. Fantastic hardware to go with my five Art Series lenses and the old Canon 70-200 f2.8 series 1 lens is consigned to the scrapheap.
Hello! I am considering getting this lens for my CANON R8 Mirrorless, do you know if it works just fine? Have you tried it yourself on a mirrorless camera? Im aware I need to use EF to RF adapter. Looking to hear back from you :)
sir i have seen Tamron 70-200g2 and tamron 70-210 these both lens result almost same on another youtube channel , and i feel surprised if its really true ? i wanna hear ur precious openion about these two lenses on canon90d or any crop sensor camera
Great video as always, Dustin. I have the EOS R and the announced RF 70-200 really excites me with how lightweight and compact it is. However; I’m afraid it’s going to be ludicrously expensive like the Sony 70-200 or Nikon 70-200. Best to buy one of these and adapt it or wait and see what happens? How do you think adapting a Sigma with the Canon EF to RF adapter would perform?
I think the RF lens will be excellent, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is very expensive. The Sigma should adapt perfectly, though obviously the balance wont be great with such a heavy lens.
I was only able to watch part of this video so far so I'm not sure if this was touched on but were you able to try the A7RIII + MC-11 + Canon teleconverter + Sigma 70-200mm?
Go for Sigma, it is build like a real professional lens unless you want to waste money. And don't forget that Sigma has 4 year warranty while Canon is only one.
I avoid the Tamron as I am used to the focus ring of the Canon. I dont have the time to switch think my instincts. One less thing to worry about. But I have seen the Tamron for $900 and its a great deal as my 70-200Mark1 IS L Canon either needs repair(not focusing right, and has a feel of drag half way in the zoom barrel. Also I already repaired the front glass replace), or if I should switch? Whaddaya think? $400+ repair or a new Sigma ? I have both Canon and MC11 Sigma extender I use on the 150-600mm Sport, so? Any suggestions?
Hi Dustin, I have a question. It's a "sport" lens and is it suitable for landscape photographing? We know when doing landscape photographing, we always set the aperture to F8 or smaller, so does image still looks good? thx! ( I thought a lens for sports means good image quality in a large aperture :) )
Great review as per usual, Dustin. What do you say for this setup; Sony A7 III with 15-30 Tamron G2, 24-70 Tamron G2 and a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 Sport? Would you forgo the Sigma lens for a time to get an A9 vs the A7 for video and stills?
I'm not sure if you are aware of it but Sigma and Tamron lenses focus and zoom in different directions. Not a huge deal, but if you already know that your gonna get 2 Tamron lenses you might want to consider to just stick with Tamron.
@@timotheus34 Thank you. I am aware of that but I don't think it will be too much of a problem. Thank you for the heads up though. I'll be using the Sigma MC-11 mount/converter which works extremely well with the Sigma lens and pretty well with the Tamron lenses. I may opt for the A9 and delay the Sigma lens and hopefully they will come out with a native mount soon! I wish Tamron would come out with those lenses in native Sony mount as well! Take care.
I would definitely recommend the Tamron 28-75 for your Sony. It works so much better than the 24-70 adapted. Tamron has just announced a 17-28mm F2.8 wide angle zoom for Sony, too, with signs pointing to a 70-200 (or something like that) before the year is out. That’s the route I would personally go.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks very much Dustin. I was leaning towards the the 24-70 just for the stabilization. Not sure if the Sony IBIS is good enough for handheld video without the lens IS? Would you use the 17 instead of the 15 for astro - and that lens range I will use for handheld video so I'm hoping for IS there as well. Thanks again!
The Tamron G2 is going to give you slightly better VC performance, but if having smooth video footage is a priority, invest in a motorized gimbal. I really like the 28-75, myself.
If money is no object (and weight is), then I would probably go with the Canon. If money is a factor at all, the Sigma is going to give fairly equal performance (slightly better at some focal lengths)
I didn't have those two at the same time, though I suspect it will work just fine. The MC-11 allows Sigma lenses to adapt well, and the a6400 has great focus.
Thanks Dustin... a real pity that you cannot remove the tripod collar but good to know that it is more native on the Canon bodies than the Tamron... Still torn by these two. Cheers!
Not of the existing lenses for the foreseeable future (my schedule is already booked through the end of the year). Any future releases will be tested on the R5, however.
Hello, Thank you very much for this review. I only have a question. Third party lenses tends to have weakness for focus-tracking. So what about this lens? Thanks
As I responded to Larry, I’m somewhat limited by the circumstances in my review period. The whole time I had the lens it was extremely cold outside with deep snow everywhere. Not a whole lot was moving fast out there.
Thanks Dustin for this wonderful review. I am only shooting for landescape. What is the best lens between those two lenses in terms of sharpness and contrast. I am not really intrested in auto focus nor VR, just looking for quality picture. Thanks
Dustin - Great video (as usual). I have an EOS R with the EF adapter. I'm considering this lens with the Sigma 2x extender. Would this rig be unwieldy? Would image quality suffer with all those extensions?
I haven't tested all those elements. If you priority is getting to 400mm on a regular basis, consider getting a lens like a 100-400 that actually covers the focal length you want.
can't remember if you said in the video but can you have the sigma only stabilise when you take the shot as you can on the Tamron, about too buy the sigma but its quite a deal breaker for me as I hate when the view finder is trying to be stabilised so rather have it when I actually take the shot, thank you
It's slightly more complicated than that. You can assign that stabilizer mode to one of the custom buttons, but you'll need to use the USB dock to do that.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for the reply, yeh got dock, just when looking through a written review it showed pictures of when the dock was connected to the lens and it didn't say anything about a mode for a capture priority, just listed 3, 1 was panning, 1 general and 1 I think was less jerky in the view finder, so hopefully it's on the dock somewhere, many thanks
@@DustinAbbottTWI ah thank you for that, eased my mind about ordering it, here in the uk its around 100 pounds cheaper than the tamron, thank you for your help :)
Great review.. I just got this lens and it sure is impressive. Heavy as a freight train, but I'll keep doing curls and shoulder presses. :) Can't wait to get a USB dock so I can setup those custom modes!
I really just want the lens for head shots. I'm gonna order it and probably return the Tamron to Amazon if it's sharper at 200 the way this video says it does. Does anyone know if you need the USB connecter to get it to work for the z6.
@@DustinAbbottTWI totally forgot about that too. I love Dylan Patrick's work. He's the guy that does the cinematic headshot. Plus I think the Tamron might be defective. It's seems to not consistently delivery the sharpness for my z6.
Thank you Dustin. I really appreciate your reviews - always very professional and honest. I keep my Tamron 70-200 G2 because I can't justify extra weight of Sigma with little quality gain. We currently have very good lenses selection and all of them provide similar results.
Between the NIkkor 70-200 FL for €1,769 imported with one year of warranty and the Sigma for €1,366 locally and 5 year warranty, which do I go for? Is the AF speed and accuracy of the Sigma a match for the FL? I already have the Sigma dock and the 150-600 Contemporary.
@@DustinAbbottTWI How would you rate the focus speed and accuracy of the Sigma compared the the Nikon FL? As a professionel, do you have any reservations regarding the durabillity, longevity and focus speed of the 70-200 Sport? Is there still a risk of Nikon changing their AF ingeneering leaving the Sigma incompatible in the future? Thanks,
I haven’t used the Nikon (I don’t shoot Nikon), so I can’t comment on how they compare in terms of focus speed. If you purchase the USB Dock, it essentially eliminates the risk of the lens becoming incompatible with future bodies.
Another superb review - well done! I was, until I saw your series of reviews on the Sigma, seriously considering buying the Nikon 70-200mm f/4. Now, I am almost certainly going to buy the 70-200mm Sigma Sport f/2.8. I only have one slight reservation, weight! Do you consider that the high quality of the lens outweighs any concerns about the weight? Finally, your reviews are so thorough and unbiased that I would never even consider buying a camera or lens without first seeing your review on the product. Alun
Thanks. After a great of thought, viewing of countless reviews, etc., I am going to purchase the Sigma. WEX have put the lens aside for me. I hope to get it shipped next week.

They are definitely in their golden era right now - though they need to start putting their lenses on a diet.
70-200mm Nikkor 2.8e fl ed vr and this sigma which is the best lens to focus and nice colors
I don't review Nikon, so I'm not really qualified to offer an opinon here.
Great review as always. How does the Sigma stack up against the 70-200 GM?
I haven’t used the Sony yet, so I don’t know.
I’m wanting a 70-200 f2.8, but I’m going nuts with which one to get Canon...Sigma or Tamron? Which one is the best lens for a good price?
The Canon 24-70 is definitely better, and the 70-200 Sport (while excellent) is bigger and heavier than the Canon version.
thank you for the Sony compatibility test, it's what I was looking. great video
My pleasure.
I'm just glad to hear that you are happy about the purchase decisions that you've made.
Definitive sigma 70-200mm f2.8 Sport lens review. Very comprehensive.
Glad it helped out.
I own a Canon 70-200 f2.8 for fourteen years and after see and read a lot of reviews from different sources with any doubt this Sigma lens was the right choice not only because the price but the performance and the quality of the images as well. Thanks for the review and for let me know the lens is on sale $999.00 (back in may)
That's a LOT of lens for $1000!
Amazing review and explaination. This shows the expertise. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, really thanks. I understand correctly that sigma works better than tamron with canon R line cameras?
Not to my knowledge. Sigma's do work better on Sony via their MC-11, so maybe that is what you are thinking of.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thx, but i wonder which lense is is faster autofocus for sports. Sigma, Tamron or Canon? Looking for fastest and most precise focus between Sigma or Tamron. And planning not use tele adapters
I was looking for a video comparing this for lens to the Tamron for the longest. There's one in Dutch but trust me... I don't speak Dutch
I'm glad you found this one.
i do, i have not found that review yet😂
Goodafternoon, i AM realy doubting between the sigma OR the tamron, wich one perform better with a kenko extender?
Tanks for answering.
I'm afraid I've not tested either with a Kenko extender, and the performance varies according the version of the extender.
Thank You for your time and effort!.....
You're welcome.
Thank you Dustin for all your work!
Thank you!
That's the problem, I would say. Even those who think that weight isn't an issue get tired of carrying ever-heavier gear.
I am thinking about the weight also. I know from first hand experience that with prolonged use of a heavier lens camera shake gets worse.
Hi Dustin,
Which of the lenses has faster focus, the Sigma or the Tamron?
Thanks and greetings from Chile!
Not much different. They are both very fast, and I don't think that is really a distinguishing factor between the two.
Hi Dustin, which one should I get for my D7200. The Sigma Sport or the Tamron G2?
Either lens is a good choice. The Sigma is ever-so-slightly higher performing, but it is also bigger and heavier.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yes that is what I am thinking about, will the extra weight be ever worth it though.
Does this fit D7200 as i'm looking to get lens but thought this fits only full frame cameras D750, D850... FX mount ?
Awesome! I’ve been using it on my A7III with much success. I’m excited to try a teleconverter
That definitely adds value to the lens.
Love you for this detailed break down. Thanks man. Subscribed 😊
Thanks for the sub!
As a father of 4-years-old boy, I was a bit scared to see the Tamron lens standing close to the edge of table at around 03:00, and you waving your hands emotionally in close proximity! :-)
Don't watch this Scott Graham video then ;) th-cam.com/video/7Z9WowYzy9w/w-d-xo.html
LOL. I suspect the camera angle may have exaggerated the danger.
Do you suggest to use it for motorsport photography? Compared with the sony 2.8, what's the performance in AF and sharpness?
I haven't used the Sony yet, but this is a very sharp lens. Still, if focus speed is your primary concern, using a native lens is probably wise.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for your feedback
Very nie review. Sigma was tested with canon or sigma extender?
I used a Canon 1.4x III
Excuse me Sr. Since Nikon D850 does not have an AA filter like Canon does, would you say the Sigma would provide even better results? And also, would you say this Sigma is sharper than the Canon 70-200 III if used with a Nikon D850?
You probably could achieve a little more sharpness on the D850, yes.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you very much for your help, always very helpful Sr. Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Dustin you have a great channel. I always come out smarter after watching a video.
That's good to hear!
21:35 Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED? GOOD JOB SIGMA. nice review
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you so much, this helps us make our decision!
Another great review series. Very informative for anyone in the market for any 70-200 F/2.8. On a related note: both Tamron and Sigma recently cut prices on their 150-600 zooms. Does this signal G2 releases on the horizon? Thanks.
Well, Tamron already has a G2, so I doubt that for them. It’s probably more to keep sales moving on them.
You continue to do amazing work. I purchased my last 3 sigma lenses based on your detailed reviews. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Ultimately you have to carry it around. Are you willing to carry the Sigma? If so, that's a great price for it.
Damn look at that show.
What do u think of putting the sigma/Tamron on a canon m50 body with the viltrox speed booster?
I think that is going to be a very front heavy combo. I'm not sure how good the AF would be, as I have not tested that combo.
Have you tried the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 is iii? I wonder if it worth the extra money versus the sigma
I haven't. I've moved on exclusively to mirrorless, for one, and I also didn't see enough of a change between the LII and LIII to really inspire me.
Is there an adapter that fits the Sigma lens EF mount for Canon to a Nikon D700?
I'm not sure about that.
Hi Mister Abott,
At first, you're so easy to reed on your website, easy to anderstand and fellow on video. :)
I live in France, between Bordeaux and Cognac.
I'm glad you are enjoying the lens. It's a very strong performer!
Hi Dustin,
Many thanks for the great Review.
Sigma has a well established distribution and repair network.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. Love you videos.
Well Dustin this review has helped me make my mind up thanks for a plain, no nonsense review
Glad to help
So well spoken, detailed and concise, i might be able to get some sleep now. Thank you! Lou
Been stressing over this one, have you? :)
Thank you Mr Abbott
So about a year and a half later are you using either the tamron or sigma? Have either of them had a firmware update to help with any shortcomings?
hi Andrew, I've actually moved entirely to mirrorless cameras, so at the moment I'm actually using the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 on Sony
Hi Dustin! Have you every tested this lens on a Sony using the Sigma MC-11 adapter with upgraded firmware? If so, what were your thoughts?
I haven’t. I’ve done little with the MC-11 recently because everyone is developing directly for Sony
@@DustinAbbottTWI Okay! Thanks.
It’s focus performance is very close to the speed of Canon
would you get it over Nikon 70-200 VRii?
I don't test Nikon, so I don't feel qualified to respond to that.
Thank you. Very good as always. I can't be more happier with mine and actually thankful for having to by MC11 (I shoot with Sony) as I now have an option to use it with other non native lenses that I can pick up for a bargain price.
Have you tried the Eye AF with it? That's one of the things I'm concerned about with this.
Eye AF works fine. The MC-11 is a great tool, and Sigma has been great about updating it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Here's hoping it works as well with the upcoming Animal Eye AF.
It’s works excellent in Sony. No regrets. Also, it’s the only near native alternative
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for review. Great as always!
I am glad for MC-11 but:
1. Tamron + MC-11 = 1720 g and Sigma = 1805+220 =2025 !!!.
Uff...
2. Is MC-11 sealed - I guess NO.
3. Extra console for firmware upgrade in both cases ( 28-70 goes via Sony body)
My hope is that Tamron for Sony will come.
That's good to hear, as I didn't have a lot of opportunities to test that.
Hello! I am considering getting this lens for my CANON R8 Mirrorless, do you know if it works just fine? Have you tried it yourself on a mirrorless camera? Im aware I need to use EF to RF adapter. Looking to hear back from you :)
I have not used it via an adapter.
sir i have seen Tamron 70-200g2 and tamron 70-210 these both lens result almost same on another youtube channel , and i feel surprised if its really true ? i wanna hear ur precious openion about these two lenses on canon90d or any crop sensor camera
Great review, helps me a lot in my purchase decision
You're welcome.
I wonder how this lense goes with nikon Z6 in Video? the new Z70-200 2.8 cost 3000 usd
Ouch...that is pricey. Unfortunately I have zero experience with the Z6 and couldn't comment.
Just got a sigma one and it works great with Z6. Go for it.
I was only able to watch part of this video so far so I'm not sure if this was touched on but were you able to try the A7RIII + MC-11 + Canon teleconverter + Sigma 70-200mm?
I did. If you watch the whole video you will get that coverage
Still on the fence between Canon 70-200 III and the Sigma.
SIGMA!!!!!!!!
I would say go Canon if money is not a big factor and you prefer less weight. Go Sigma if the weight doesn’t bother you
If you have the budget, get the canon.
If you’ve already got those accessories, I would go Sigma. You can still get some money from your lens, even with need of repair.
My favorite lens excellent,fantastic review
Dustin great!!!
Thanks for the feedback.
The term "Sport" has more to do with Sigma's internal divisions. It's a great landscape lens at smaller apertures.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you! : )
A well detailed review!
Thank you.
Sigma vs tamron 70 200.2.8 best lens
So, if money is no object for this Canon shooter, do you recommend I save and buy the Sigma instead of the Canon 70-200 2.8 III?
If money is no object (and weight is), then I would probably go with the Canon. If money is a factor at all, the Sigma is going to give fairly equal performance (slightly better at some focal lengths)
Thank you, Dustin, I hold your learned opinions in very high esteem and throughly enjoy your reviews/tutorials.
Your review is really fantastic. Not a report of feature list. Does it work well with Sony a6400?
I didn't have those two at the same time, though I suspect it will work just fine. The MC-11 allows Sigma lenses to adapt well, and the a6400 has great focus.
Dustin Abbott thanks a lot.
Is there any particular focal range that you feel this lens is at a sweet spot such as sharpest at 100mm for example? I'm loving this lens, thank you
If you watch the first image quality segment, you’ll see detailed information on that for about 4 different focal lengths.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you, will re-watch the 1st video again for that
Great job Dustin, keep on, please
Will do!
Great job Dustin! Thank you
My pleasure.
Thanks Dustin... a real pity that you cannot remove the tripod collar but good to know that it is more native on the Canon bodies than the Tamron... Still torn by these two.
Cheers!
It really is a difficult choice. If weight isn't a problem, go for the Sigma. If it is, consider the Tamron.
Thank you Dustin.
Will you be doing any reviews with Sigma lens on Canon's EOS R5 or R6?
Not of the existing lenses for the foreseeable future (my schedule is already booked through the end of the year). Any future releases will be tested on the R5, however.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Understandable. thank you for the response!
Hello,
Thank you very much for this review.
I only have a question. Third party lenses tends to have weakness for focus-tracking. So what about this lens?
Thanks
I have the same question.
Thanks
I would say in an absolute sense I'd go with the Sigma.
Mode 3 would be the "dynamic" or capture priority mode
@@DustinAbbottTWI ah thank you for that, eased my mind about ordering it, here in the uk its around 100 pounds cheaper than the tamron, thank you for your help :)
Great review.. I just got this lens and it sure is impressive. Heavy as a freight train, but I'll keep doing curls and shoulder presses. :) Can't wait to get a USB dock so I can setup those custom modes!
It is an impressive one.
I really just want the lens for head shots. I'm gonna order it and probably return the Tamron to Amazon if it's sharper at 200 the way this video says it does. Does anyone know if you need the USB connecter to get it to work for the z6.
If you want the tighter framing for headshots, the Sigma is probably the way to go.
@@DustinAbbottTWI totally forgot about that too. I love Dylan Patrick's work. He's the guy that does the cinematic headshot. Plus I think the Tamron might be defective. It's seems to not consistently delivery the sharpness for my z6.
Great review as always
Thank you
Thank you Dustin. I really appreciate your reviews - always very professional and honest. I keep my Tamron 70-200 G2 because I can't justify extra weight of Sigma with little quality gain. We currently have very good lenses selection and all of them provide similar results.
That’s very true about the quality of current lenses. They all have strengths and weaknesses, but they are all very good.
It sounds like the 70-200 Sport is a good fit for you, then.
If you purchase the USB Dock, it essentially eliminates the risk of the lens becoming incompatible with future bodies.
....does Sigma have a 70-200mm for Sony emount?
Not yet, though one has been announced but not yet released. The details of the size and weight are still unknown.
Alun
Ultimately that's a question best answered by you. I'm not sure what your weight tolerance is. The Sigma is a very good lens, but it is heavy.
