    Other trumpet players in unison: "I'm up high."
    Lynn: "I think I'll hit the octave. Ok, one more octave."
    Dogs: "You called?"
    Lynn: "Oops. Too high."

    When I was in high school, Lynn was my teacher's idol as was Maynard. We're talking "Welcome Back Kotter" here. The music teacher had graduated from the school. Maynard was in town and played at a club called Grant's Cabin. The band went into the crowd and played "Hey Jude". Lynn was right behind me. My ears were ringing the rest of the night.

      Jeff Franz now it’s the other way around, my teachers idolize others while myself in high school right now idolizes Maynard, Lynn, Allen Vitzutti and James Morrison.

      Was this in 1974 in Pacific Beach? If so, I was on tour with them at the time. I had hooked up with their road manager in Phoenix and ended up married to him for a couple of years.

    Nice, Lynn! Just a kid you were here. Thought I might've seen you perform with MF in Holland, Michigan, Winter of '77/'78 ("New Vintage"! I had the T-shirt until it was just shreds remaining!) I was blessed to see Maynard twice more in my lifetime, in Barrington, Illinois, 2003, and San Marcos, California, 2005. He still remains as my all-time favorite Jazz player and band leader. Keep posting! You're the most prolific former MF player I've seen so far.

      @@lynn95441 I've had the opportunity to chat with a few dozen musicians who played in different MF bands and I have consistently come away with the same impression. They enjoyed their time in the band and they ALL had nothing but praise and affection for Maynard. While his music is a wonderful and enduring legacy, the quality of the men and musicians he helped create might even be a far greater one.

      I figured out what I now call the MF Protocol, during marching band season in Chicago. My chops were sticking to the mouthpiece in the cold, so I decided to try playing dry..... To get a good sound, a number of things needed to change. Within 10 minutes, my previously squeaky high G turned into a roaring double C...... That's when the fun began.... :)

    • @MrOptomai

      I got a case of chapped lips and the same thing happened to me. Playing outside in the cold. But we also know it's about airflow as well. My range changed in just a few minutes.

    • @lynn95441
      @lynn95441  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Within a week on the band, Maynard realized my capabilities and potential, and started giving me various upper register things to play, including Pocahontas.... He gave me the bridge to Mac Park in about a week and a half..... He always encouraged me in every way. I was never competitive with Maynard, nor did I ever fail at anything I attempted, so he could trust me.... No squeaky high notes, but instead, a very close emulation of Maynard's sound and approach..... Maynard was my guru, and I was his disciple, always honoring him..... Still do, every time I pick up the horn..... No matter what I play, I always ask, "How would Maynard play this?"
