While watching this video, I finally realized why I prefer your channel to all others -- the variety you offer! Thank you so much for all your good tips on budgeting, cooking, meal planning, quilting, gardening, cleaning, home improvement and just plain, overall living well. I especially like when you share scenes from your wanders around France.

Agree totally. She's a mature woman. She speaks like a mature woman. I've left channels where the folks were immature. Anything goes wrong. That is really life. Not freaking out. Loved, Especially when Jane talked about churning. Buying this and letting go of that. Hoardish or holding on to this and this. Buying this and that. To turn around and not use it or give it away or store it. Churning is no good. It is a waste of money, time, space. I'm a workaholic, all my life. I love good grades in school. I love working hard. I like keeping a clean home. I like to watch Channels that are similar to the younger me, the me now or the future me. Loving, organized and clean. Donating, loving people. Mostly not sitting idle. Not stewing in my life of years ago. Living, learning and loving every new moment that I am in. As well as planning for the future moments :-) Jane is a great motivation to common sense living. Makes for living well :-) agreed.

Another tip to save money on cleaning is to use less than the recommended amount of soap/laundry detergent etc. Less product still gives great results.

You got me thinking Jane. I bet our Grandmother's and great Grandmother's never had a 50 different cleaning potions under their sink, but what they did have was a good broom, dust pan and shovel, rags and some soap etc. And their houses were "usually" cleaner than many houses today ❤

Hi Jane and Mike, I have struggled to keep on top of cleaning but recently discovered a helpful method to get into a routine, it’s by setting a 30 minute timer and doing Monday Mop Day (Hoover/mop floors), Tuesday Toilets (bathrooms), Wednesday Wipe ( surfaces, kitchen cabinets, dust throughout), Thursday Throw Day (compost caddy and bins, declutter), Friday Fabric/Fire (Bedlinen, ironing, put clothes away and fill log baskets and coal) and then Saturday Speed (20 minute whizz roundish necessary). It’s changed my life 😅 and I feel so much better about it and myself tbh. Thanks for another helpful set of ideas, I’ve gradually been changing to generic cleaning products and finding they are often better for a fraction of the price 👍👍👍

Part of my job is cleaning elderly peoples homes to help them stay out of nursing homes. My favourite cleaner to use is 1/4 vinegar, 1/4 mentholated spirits and 1/2 water in a spray bottle. The vinegar cuts through any grease or grime and the mentholated spirits gives a lovely streak free shine. Works on glass, tiles, surfaces, stainless steel- take your pick! Oh, and trusty old Jiff/Ajax cream cleaner.

January was the kitchen & included changing the cooker hood filters & cleaning away the grease up there. My personal game-changer is a Roomba & a Braava Jet robot mop. I never do any vacuuming now, except stairs & corners with a hand-held vacuum.

The weather has been very wintry so I'm home a lot now. I just started cleaning in the kitchen. I'm reorganizing my pantry and taking inventory. And bulk cooking to have quick meals frozen or in the fridge for busy days. I've also pulled out a lot of old, stained kitchen towels to add to my cleaning cloths. Hi Jane and Mike. I no longer buy loads of cleaning products. Like you, I have a multisurface cannister type spray, but a lot of the time, I use the supermarket's generic washing-up liquid which I dilute with water in a spray bottle and which is safe to use on various surfaces, including the shower screen. Handy to patch clean carpets too. Quick rinse wipe after and job done. I agree about the handheld vacuum. I was given a voucher when I last took out my SIM only phone contract which I used to get one of these. It isn't a full sized one but big enough, especially for the stairs and inside the car. Otherwise, in-between vacuuming I use my good old Ewbank cleaner, which is great for giving the place a quick once over, at no cost. Regarding clearing out, I did the rounds bit by bit last year so I'm at the stage now where I'm trying to keep on top of it. Thanks again to you both for this great video.

Answering your question about where I start: because I have to put away all the seasonal décorations and prepare for eventual power shortage due to winter storms, that's where I start: closets, emergency supplies, drugs and meds cabinets, storage bins. I started the New Year by going through all of our holiday décor and putting aside, to donate, everything that we haven't put out in years. No point in keeping it! Then I moved on to my books. I keep classics, of course, but there is no need for so many cookbooks and pieces of light fiction. That segued into the kitchen. 2 people do not need as many mugs and dishes as we have! Culling these will allow me to put more things away in the cupboards, rather than kept on the counters or stashed away somewhere. I've been trying to stay on top of keeping at least the sinks and counters clean daily. I make my own vinegars and use mainly these, with a dash of inexpensive dish soap, or homemade liquid soap concentrate, to clean pretty much everything.

I got rid of things like large furniture and extra beds etc. The problem was I was over stocked with cleaning things, toiletries, stationery , tights, underwear , cloths in general. These things are things I will use over time but the issue is we’re do you store them until they are used up.I have got rid of anything I will not use like dishwasher tablets now I don’t have a dish washer. I just cant bring myself to throw them out but it gets on my wires that I have nowhere to store the amount of stuff I have got. I can relate to not wanting to throw away consumable items that will get eventually get used up. When my grandfather passed away, I collected his half used cleaning products and brought them to my house, as it seemed wasteful to toss them out. Because I don’t like clutter, I simply placed them in a large plastic storage bin in my pantry. Whenever I ran out of something like dish liquid or laundry detergent, I “shopped” from the bin. It took me a year or two to use up the products, but it saved me money.

The main concern with the generic brands is that the supermarkets are undercutting the named brands so they can control the market. The branded companies make these but package them in generic packaging. True of milk and other foods too - we used to be milk producers, so we know this is true. I buy generic for a few things, but I try to support Aussie farmers and manufacturers that actually make things 100% (or nearly 100%) Australian. We rely too much on imports in our country. There has been such a decline in brand choice in supermarkets here and I once shopped in a different store and they mostly ONLY had generic brands - which were the same price as the name brands where I usually shop. As you say, Jane, look around and shop frugally, but also be mindful where our $ are actually going.... to which country....
Thank you for your wonderful, non-judgemental and inspiring videos. Keep up the great work. 🇦🇺💐
