Thanks v much really useful. My Achilles niggle / injury flares up every now again - usually due to lack of sleep / stress and any drop off in strength training. I have a theragun mini and have often wondered how best to use it. Thanks Mareka
I have the same issue, It went away for a few months before coming back. I feel like drop off in strength training might have caused this, is there anything else specific you do to reduce the sensitivity or pain?
I have Hagland Deformity with insertional tendinitis and bursitis. Receiving shockwave therapy plus mild excercise...is this the same as using massage gun?
Yes, I would stay away from any hard pressure over the area of the Achilles that is injured as that often just makes the pain worse several hours after the treatment.
My husband hurt his Achilles a year ago after a fall at home. Went to the doctor and X-rays were not taken. Was then treated for a tear higher up, walked with a moon boot for 6 weeks and then took it off. Only later to discover that the Achilles had torn and no medical attention was given to it. Is it a possibility to use the massage gun on the Achilles as it is difficult for him to walk properly. PS: Might add he is 73 years of age. Thnx.
It sounds like your husband will benefit more from actually getting a proper rehab plan for the Achilles to help him walk better. If the Achilles is super sensitive, then I would not use the massage gun on it but if it is just a bit tender then it might be OK. But I would also perhaps look at what shoes he is wearing (usually running shoes can work well). You can find more info on shoes here: th-cam.com/video/fDL9rEFuGJk/w-d-xo.html If your husband wants help figuring this out and with getting back to his normal activities, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help him with via video call. I run ultras and train high mileage. I ran 16 miles yesterday but couldn't run today because of it. Would it be beneficial to split the runs? Really hoping i dont have to stop training.
It might help to split the runs - if you want to be able to maintain some fitness while helping your tendon to recover, you have to figure out what distance + frequency it can currently tolerate. If you continue to push it to the point where you have significant increase in symptoms the next day, it usually just progresses to a point where you have to take a prolonged break. I use it on my throat to warm my vocals and release my scalene. Also do my face/forehead (sinus) and behind my ear. Given me some food for thought.

Doesnt massage promote blood flow which will help the healing process?
Blood flow doesn't have much of an impact in tendon healing. Here's our video on it: th-cam.com/video/lh0IBZmq7kk/w-d-xo.html

No, shockwave is something totally different - here's a video about it: th-cam.com/video/GGZvRdxEXp8/w-d-xo.html
Would vibration be better than percussion for insertional achilles tendonitis.
I would not use it on insertional Achilles tendonitis - it is very likely to irritate it regardless of the setting.
@@TreatMyAchilles okay, thank you.
Thank for this content! Does the same guidance apply when using a scraping tool?
