When I was looking for my first pair of shorts, I asked " do you need bibshorts". The bike shop guy said, no you don't need bibs , but once you use them you won't ever put on cycling shorts again. So true. I now have 4 bibs and that first pair of shorts.
Bib Shorts are sized at the waist. Use your waist size to choose. If your size is in between, take the next size up. European manufacturers like Castelli and Santini are size small, so go up one size when buying from European manufacturers.
No probs. I just ordered a pair of DHB Classic bib shorts, extra, extra large - all your fault. That's £50 watching your video :-) I am 6 foot 2 inch tall, 36 inch waist and I have tried on their winter bib tights before in 2 sizes last year - in extra large size and in extra extra large. The extra large size seemed a tad tight so, in theory, the extra extra large bib shorts should fit. The XXL DHB tights seemed fine but went back as they were winter tights but did not feel thick enough to me to be warm. (Yes, I am ranting now.). I currently have a pair of XL Louis Garneau cycle shorts and a pair of XL Polaris cycle tights - but both are a tad small on me as either pad does not seem to come up far enough on my backside. So you can see where I am going in ordering the XXL DHB Classic bib shorts. Dependent upon the mail they should arrive sometime between Monday and the end of the world occuring. Hopefully the former. All your fault ;-)
LOL. Hey Bob, what I have found is that certain manufacturers I size up. I am not sure whether it applies to DHB or not but for Castelli and Santini, I size up to XXL. My size in Rapha is Large which is a 36inch waist. Most European Manufacturers' sizing are a bit small so I size up to XXL. I suspect the DHB will be perfect for you based on the experience you have had with the XL.
I'll let you know. There were a few hundred reviews of them and many of them said to go a size up. One of the pitfalls of this new age of ordering things online. Anyway, I hope they fit so that I can go out and pose on my bike - lol.
This is a great no nonsense practical review. Thanks for the upload. Wondering if you think a less expensive pair of bib shorts like Pearl Izumi are worth buying for a first pair?
Yes Chris. I have owned all kinds of shorts. It's not the price that necessarily make them good. Focus on the intent of the shorts. Some are made for shorter duration rides and some are made for longer rides at varying prices. I just didn't have a pearl Izumi when I made the video, but I have owned them in the past. The fit of the shorts on your body is more important that the price. So the fit and then the chamois for the kind of riding you do, whether short or long rides.
Hey buddy thank you for dialing my fit on my new bike.Just wanted to compliment you on new effects on this video. Nice to see the creativity on this film. Love the animation on those cycling shorts around you. Really cool stuff.
Veloharmoney, great video! I just purchased my very first pair of cycling bibs. I'm excited. I agree with you concerning the waist line when wearing cycle shorts. That is very annoying! I purchased a pair of Specialized SL Expert Bibs. I got last year model on sale for 120 dollars, regularly 150. The salesman at the bike store said the bibs are very comfortable and what Specialized Race Team wear. Well, I'm not a racer, but I ride often and hard enough to get me where I gotta go! You mentioned in this video that you wear an Extra large. I'm about to purchase a pair of Rapha Bibs. I'm going to test which set of bibs work best. I'm a tad under 6 feet. My waist measurement is 32 inches. I wear a medium and was wondering if I should go up a size? Thanks, Veloharmoney. You have been awesome to me and I consider you a good friend and brother, indeed! Sincerely, Enzo T or Frado 😊
Miasmic, welcome to the channel. They look funny when without your jersey on, but they work so well for riding. Experienced riders exclusively use Bib Shorts because they function so well versus the regular shorts.
Good cycling essentials video, while every other video are focusing on the wrong things this video nailed the important aspects of cycling nobody talks about. I'm going to buy my 1st bib shorts soon cuz I now know that we don't need to remove our top jersey just to urinate. 😁👍🚵
It was hard to first ask about the bottom end whin I was first buying really good gear. When I did, bibs was recommended. I looked around and found some great deals on top end bibs on the clearance rakes in a chain store.
I use normal shorts, tight enough, I am perfectly happy with them. No rolling, no moving around. I am confused, however, with so many people here and elsewhere, preferring bib shorts. However, my longest rides on road bike (kind of) are 100km. I am now looking for a new set of cycling shorts since I plan to do some 200km events and seeing this video has made me wonder….
I got my first pair of bibs as part of a prize for raising $1,040 for the Ride 2 Recovery charity last November (prize was bibs and jersey). I do like them better, because like you said, they don't roll down.
Agbaman, keep training and you will be fit; not look fit and then you can get bibs that are practical like you mentioned. You should go to Veloharmony.com, I have training plans for all levels of riders.
Hi! Thanks for the great useful content and videos! I just purchased some expensive assos bib shorts and I was torn between L which we are noticeably tight on the thighs .. the straps were also tight enough to make me feel I needed to lean forward.. the XL .. is just more comfortable but no slacking on the upper straps.. so I went with the XL. what do you suggest I go for? I’m fairly new to cycling.. but cycle regularly ... I’m comfortable in my size L rapha.. I’m slowly losing weight .. any advice would be appreciated.
Welcome to the channel. As explained in the video, find the most comfortable size with no slack in the straps when in the cycling position. Here is a video that explains that in more detail: th-cam.com/video/xw-siUlIeoA/w-d-xo.html
I have been loosing weight and the my new bicycle clothing is on the baggy side now. Shopping around in my area at this time of the year has not been good with all the events happening and my winter savings went into a new bicycle. Is there any online site that you'd look at this time of year?
Well if you're not looking for fancy stuff, I highly recommend Spotti cycle clothing. They are pretty good and very reasonable but I am not sure they ship internationally. If you're in the U.S. it should be good. As for baggy cycling Jerseys, I take mine to an alterations place and get them sized down. For the price of one good Jersey, you can get a few of them altered. Here is the link for the spotti wear video, use the links in the description to buy. th-cam.com/video/8YjUYeYCzuo/w-d-xo.html
Hotep, No I don't. A little more detail would help. Are you talking about bike computers that get their speed from magnet for just a computer like a Garmin?
Hotep, a video would not give you what you need. Here is a link to a site that I use to do research on many things. He covers everything you are asking for in details for the garmin and lot of other things. You will find what you need here: www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/08/garmin-edge-800-in-depth-first-look.html
HHHmmm...never thought of that one. I suppose it probably doesn't matter much for my casual commute of about 7.5 miles each way but I'll try to keep that in mind the next time I need new shorts. Thank you.
Shorts are still required in my opinion because you wear anything else, and after even a few rides, you can bust a hole in your clothes. Besides, even the casual ride I do is 15 miles x 5 = 75 miles per week so it does tend add up. I do wear jersey, gloves, SPD shoes even with these rides. Cycling wear ventilates way better. Gloves protect against scrapes and injuries and give some comfort. SPD shoes are more efficient and have the proper stiffness. I don't buy anything that expensive for cycling clothes and they tend last a long time. Bigger cost tend to go on tires, tubes, rim strip, brake pads... Of course, I was at one point riding a lot longer than these 7.5 miles each way ride but I never really noticed my shorts getting out of place. Even on a century, I didn't notice but I suppose if I wear one of my shorts out bib shorts is worth trying anyway.

Yep. I have nothing but bibs. They may look odd, but they work. Period.
Been riding in shorts for over a year. Didnt know better. I am ready to get bibs. Thank u for the great video.
Bibs are so much more comfortable.

Another great video! Once I bought bibs there were no turning back to shorts.
Thanks Scott. Yeah, Bibs just work
I own both. There are advantages and disadvantages to both...as we recently saw in the Giro. :D
A really good, informative video. The sizing info, comparing how to chose compared to your own size states, is very useful.
Thanks Bob. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to post.

Good eye there Terminator. You're welcome on the fit, appreciate you following my suggestions and am glad it all worked out. Enjoy the new bike.

Convinced me. Just bought a pair yesterday. Never going back.

I only buy them at less than retail. I love deals.
I totally agree and have you hears of anyone in your area talking about the Specialized gear for cycling ?
No I haven't. Moy.

Nothing to be confused about. Bib shorts are simply better.
@@Veloharmony fair enough :-).
God bless you Eldred. You are Cyclists' Cyclist. Grateful for All your practical ass-kickin' teachings.
Thanks Rinon. I appreciate the blessing. Glad you found the channel and we appreciate your support.

Yep. They just work better for riding.
Great video! Finally as a beginner I have an answer!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for stopping by.
Funny but I like bibs that are cut high because they hold my guts and make me look fitter but they're not practical when using the restroom.
Agbaman, keep training and you will be fit; not look fit and then you can get bibs that are practical like you mentioned. You should go to Veloharmony.com, I have training plans for all levels of riders.
Thx for the video. Good information.

Yes like the Garmin. The whole set up start to finish. Also testing. Thanks.

Casual riding does not require too many cycling specific accessories, but as your miles increase, the need becomes clear quickly.
