    **VIDEO SPOILERS BELOW**
    The Case of the Golden Idol Review, starting with what I liked:
    - Finally, a detective game that doesn’t require pixel hunting or moon logic! Every discovery and inference made comes from a point of sound and undeniable logic. This is considerably impressive since most of the deductions aren’t handed to you. I particularly loved when thinking about the story’s development actually led to finding answers.
    - The story fit the game incredibly well, and I liked how the chapters tied into one another. The murders and deaths surrounding the Golden Idol felt organic and logical (no offense to the dead people). A lesser game would have included some less interesting scenes with deaths that didn’t relate to the bigger picture just to pad the playtime.
    - The twists in this game were well-deserved and clever. The best twist is one that an incredibly astute observer can pick up on beforehand, but realizing it doesn’t ruin it. Just because people don’t know it’s coming doesn’t mean it’s bad. Often, it means the opposite.
    - I’m a sucker for a game with no filler, and this game delivered in all aspects.
    - The art style was unique and fit the gameplay perfectly. Too bad the art looks terrible when you try to make a thumbnail out of it.
    - The music and cutscenes were top notch as well. Overall, a great immersive experience.
    What I didn’t like:
    - While the game did absolutely nothing wrong, it also didn’t have exceptionally high peaks either. Everything it did, it did right, but it also seemed to play it safe. This feels like the perfect baseline for an all-time great detective game.
    Overall Rating: 9/10 (Excellent)

      something id add personally is that if you go back to previous levels, you can see more pieces that you might not have had context for before, like the proudbeast mask and steward robe in sebastian cloudsley's room in the first non-tutorial level. it all starts to fit together better and you can figure it out early if you review your clues.

      imo the most interesting part of the art design for this game is how the Idol is uniquely "3D" and detailed in its presentation, compared to everything else in the game. Really helps to emphasize its otherworldly power and significance.

    I've seen some people saying that the ending was a bit weak and forced, but personally I find it to be perfect: Edmund Cloudsley had all his talk of virtues, but he too couldn't uphold his ideology, and thinking himself unstoppable due to the golden idol met his demise at the hands of a drunk idiot, who won a cannon trough gambling, the very habit he had chastised him for all those years ago. It is truly an ironic death, for all his delusions of control and power he couldn't possibly have prepared for such a situation. Without the idols power the order collapsed, because it was formed by the religious cult who viewed it as a divine object, and so without it had no conviction in wath they preached (even tough it was never divine to begin with, just a tool, we even learn in the end that it was made of brass all along, not gold).

    • @deeznoots6241

  • @vsptylore3639

    I appreciate how full-circle Edmund's story ended up being. He wrote this big manifesto about how Lemurians lost power because they wanted pleasure rather than seeking virtue, and in the end the same happened to him. If he had focused on his political campaign he probably would have succeeded, but instead he changed course to try to kidnap Mary, and ended up dying as a result.

    • @Woodledude
      @Woodledude ปีที่แล้ว +131

      He was also bested by a "simple," hedonistic dumbass with a cannon. He saw the idol as all-powerful, yet really, it's incredibly limited. It's just a machine - And for all that he chastized the Lemurians for forgetting how to make and operate their machinery, he couldn't have made a new Idol even if he'd survived that blast.
      Doesn't matter how many years of youth you have, your bones can still be ouched.

      @mrdeblob6010 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@Woodledude I’m also now just realizing that the idol was never golden, but brass with what that shopkeep said in the final cutscene. Pushes the idea that it was just a tool and never really anything sacred like Edmund thought. Brings down his idea of “Divine Providence” even more.

    • @Sylfa
      @Sylfa ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@mrdeblob6010 Well, the pawn broker claimed it was gilded brass, so it would have been golden until it was damaged enough to remove the gilding. But you can also argue that the "pawn broker" could have been a black market fence as Koch would be trying to hide his connections with the order party so he doesn't get lynched. In which case the fence could easily just have claimed it was gilded brass to get a solid gold statuette for a fraction of its value. Either way, Koch doesn't look too happy about it.

    @ieatdetergentilikethetaste8432 ปีที่แล้ว +211

    Tyler never finds it, but outside the window in the epilogue you can see that Edmund had used the idol to drain the youth of a disabled and impoverished veteran to have enough to become Lazarus. For someone that idolises the colonies, you would think that he would hold a veteran of Albion's armies as a very virtuous person, but it's just more proof that his 'ideal society' was just window-dressing for his plan to keep himself and his cronies immortal.

    • @Anastas1786
      @Anastas1786 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Well, at that time, he's actually in hiding in _Aquitania_ (his world's France) after having captured Keene after the whole scarecrow ambush fiasco at his cabin. If relations between Albion and Aquitania are anything like in our world, he may not be as concerned with taking the few remaining years of an impoverished _Aquitanian_ veteran, particularly if it means beginning his grand plan of establishing his ever-so-wonderful Virtue-based Albionese society.
      Personally, I think Edmund _was_ 99% sincere about wanting to build a stronger, more orderly and virtuous society, it's just that his love for Mary and his hatred for his nephew, who he saw as a stupid, hedonistic spendthrift who didn't deserve her or his comfortable life, were his Achilles' heels.

Gideon Bell was an innocent man who Cloudsley made an example of simply because he was related to the King. He rewards people for giving material goods to him, gives to his cronies, and hurts tons of innocents along the way. Ultimately his ideal society is just finding excuses to take from the common folk and give to himself. Even the very start of his new "virtuous" empire was poisoned, based on theft, murder, and lies.

    The ending amused me and got me to smile that the whole party and the all powerful golden idol was taken down by an idiot. But it felt forced I feel an internal dispute leading to the death of Lazarus would have been more interesting like James and Alastair fight over the idol and knock Lazarus off a balcony with the idol breaking it for good proving the party was never as grounded as it seemed and Lazarus's ambitions made him ignorant of the internal disputes

    • @Lokisif34
      @Lokisif34 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Mmmmm yeah, but I like this ending. It’s a two way end for Edmund. Not only did breaking the first virtue get him killed he also made the same mistake the people he criticized did. The moment Lazarus dies, everything just falls apart, Alistair and James fight for an idol that’s broken because they were never even told how it works. Shows how little the brotherhood were actually grounded or connected like that. It’s also really funny that after all his schemes and lies Edmund meets his end by someone literally almost everyone thought was an idiot, because he just got lucky at gambling.

    • @SirBroadsword

      Edmund himself was the one who imposed the lopsided punishments. Excessively punishing normal people things, like drinking and having emotions, was done for the express purpose of stealing years from people and giving them to himself and his favourites. Lies and secrets get token punishment only to maintain the virtuous facade, since these things are very necessary for Edmund's regime to exist at all, and he knows this. The whole don't show emotion thing ensures that the people he allows to get closest to him are the ones who are the best at pretending everything is fine when it isn't, which historically are the kinds of people most dictators like to surround themselves with. The lawyer was the prime example - able to slip chameleon-like into and out of the order as it benefited him, witnessing and taking part in atrocities and then roundly denying it ever happened, all with a smile on his face.

    5:50 Looks like Peter and Mary ended up getting married after the dinner party where Rose died, good for them! Then her father ratted them out to the new order, not good for them.

    The golden idol in the first chapter of this video has a blue gem in it which would mean it is going to take and with the glyphs that are designated it is more likely that if used it would remove life force. Is possible that they are stealing life to live forever and rule forever.
    Stay healthy and have a fantastic day

    If Tyler sees this it's for him only, but I just want you to know that everything in my comment on the video before this (chronologically) was honest. Goodbye everyone I hate making comments online

      It is very rare for Tyler to do back to back on a series from what I’ve seen so it makes sense it isn’t more of that

      He became 108, so he was 20. Not that anyone would be surprised if they murdered children, but we don't have solid proof that they did.

      @@SirBroadsword oh I thought it said that he turned 100. I couldn't really hear Tyler well, and the font makes it a bit hard to differentiate between 0 and 8. Thank you for clarifying.
