  • Songwriters-producers and record label owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff made Philadelphia the soul capitol in the 1970s. Gamble and Huffs label Philadelphia International had a stable of artists that included the OJays, McFadden & Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Lou Rawls and Dee Dee Sharp. Their records featured the duos trademark sound: lush string orchestrations, a powerful rhythm section and a disco beat. They also worked with Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, and Jerry Butler among others. In 1990, Gamble and Huff won a Grammy for best R&B song, awarded for Simply Reds cover of the Blue Notes 1972 hit If You Dont Know Me By Know. And in 1999, they won the Grammy Trustees Award.
    Also watch the great performance by Patti LaBelle. Presented by Jerry Butler.

    Fifty years from now, we'll still be jammin' to Gamble & Huff music, just as we enjoy Holland-Dozier-Holland hits today as their oldest hits reach their golden anniversaries.
    The H-D-H team hit first with Martha and The Vandellas on "Come and Get These Memories" in 1963. I count "Cowboys to Girls" (The Intruders, 1967) as G&H's first national hit. Seemed like everything each team touched turned to gold, beacuse all could produce as well as write for their artists.

    We will be listening to, and loving the music produced by Gamble and Huff decades from now, for one simple reason: what they wrote appeals to something deep inside, and is not subject to fad or fashion. Bravo to both of them, and thank you for posting this great video.

    The Jaggerz' first LP was produced by Gamble & Huff called 'Introducing The Jaggerz' in 1968. They brought the Blue Eyed Soul to the Philly Sound Machine. The artists they covered would come to their shows to hear them. James Brown came to hear 'that white boy that does my song' A Man's World. He was talking about Billy Maybray Sr.

    To me? They were even better than Holland-Dozier-Holland....Philly Soul took over when Motown died...and it was the epitome of old school R&B, and the precursor to Disco!!!

    • @kingbee1500
      @kingbee1500 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Don't know about old school...I thought Gamble and Huff were ahead of their time with their use of a full orchestra (MFSB) in most of their recordings! At Motown, they had the incomprable Funk Brothers, of course, at H-D-H's call. These two groups and The James Brown Band/Orchestra were the best big bands in Rock/R&B history. Combo-sized groups...give me the Stax house band from Memphis and Fame Studio Group out of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. And those famous studios...The Motown Snakepit, Sigma Sound, King Records, the old Stax converted theater and Fame Studios...what history!

    I think it is shortsighted to argue one writing team over another. Holland-Dozier-Holland contributed some great hits to our culture but of course so did Gamble and Huff. That is the beauty of art. Artists create their own style, sound and feel and the people benefit. Gamble and Huff most def. had their own distinct brand--very unique and funky sound. Holland-Dozier-Holland also hand their own sound. I would argue that both groups of writers enjoyed each others music.

    Ain't it time to induct Patti Labelle. Look at her history. From the early days of creating a sound that influenced the world. No blueprints to be followed. She had raw talent that was showcased on the chillin circuits and the Apollo Theatre. Elton John was once her drummer. She made a great Acid Queen for WHO. She has sung all genres of music with unparalleled showomanship. Rock and Roll of Fame she has earned it!!!!!!

Simply Red, The Communards (with Jimmy Somerville) and Dusty Springfield. "If You Don't Know Me By Now" was covered by Ricky Gervais as his Role as David Brent on The Office (UK), Sterling Gallacher is former Co-Star sang a snippet on The UK Soap Opera The Doctors.

    jjjones77....I take nothing away from Dozier & the Holland brothers and what they did at Motown, but Gamble & Huff was the legendary 1-2 punch that put Philly on the map. And as opposed to Dozier & Holland who were really working for Motown, which was already established for 2 years before they walked in the door, Gamble & Huff made it happen under their own label, which was Philadelphia International. Almost you say??? Try BETTER! ;)
