Just discovered your videos - genius! Just starting out with the whole grow-your-own thing with my 8 year old son and it was great to start with this one.. We are starting with cucumbers. Net pots with rock wool to grow the seeds, then transplant them to a grow tank. Wish us luck!
Laughing away here. The faces made by your little darling show they are well practiced with daddy conversations. Oh and by the way. Your bloom nutrients are pretty hehehe I love it. The rascals take the memories of hydroponics worry's away. Thanks!
Ah Squash, that's the next thing I need to plant. John, I was turned onto a line of nutrients from cutting edge solutions. I'm impressed so far with the lack of salt buildup. The only organic nut system I know of. The calcium and magnesium supplements take a little different as far as handling ph goes, Really good company.. smart people. The founder knows his stuff... So far have 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 cucumber, 2 bell pepper, 5 heads of lettuce, 5 green bean, a watermelon and a bunch of strawberries that will be going into a custom tower system in my tent. So far so good. Hopefully next month I will be starting the outdoor hydro setup. Thanks for the awesome videos!
John, want to thank you for turning me on to Socrates cucumber variety - have four plants that gave me about 60 cukes, and recently have started over meaning they have a new batch of cukes coming down at the bottom of the vine. Some are four or five count on the same stem coming off the vine - all are healthy and growing fast. Light night I even picked one (or two depending on how you look at it) where two of the 8" cukes had gone together - first time I've even seen that. Thanks again my friend - Alooha Nui Loa from the islands....
Aloha John - good luck to you on the squash - I've done it several times - have two in dirt (pots) and two in Kratky right now but have yet to get a female flower - I get tons of male flowers but for some reason I cannot get a female flower to show it's lovely self. Good job on the cukes - they look yummy...
John, those leaves on the squash couldn't show a better solution, you nailed it. Now, that powdery mildew thing ~ you or your girls could carry the fungus in on your clothing if you were out raking leftover leaves, composting or where ever fungus might hangout. Wash your hands before handling the plants. I'm sure you know all this but just typing a reminder for others.
I tried squash indoors and had a hell of a time trying to get it pollinated. I eventually gave up and just ate the blooms. Really interested to see if you get it figured out.
RhondaK I literally secured some twine to an O-hook to my ceiling rafter, and started training the vines up the twine. Basically just twisting it around the twine. The tendrils gripped it as well. It worked out decent.
hey buddy long time viewer and I love your work, on the usage of lemon juice tho to lower the pH isn't really cost effective vs using pH down . the lemon juice may bring the pH down temporarily but starts to decompose and the pH rises pretty fast. also lemon juice has antibacterial properties which kils root guard products that use bacteria and give root rot fungi an upper hand. 😂😂😂. thanks for the vids and keep up the good work!
Hey, John! I've graduated from hanging fluoros to a 600w MH light and the difference is huge. But how do I learn more about nutrients? I really don't understand how much to use for different plants, and more importantly, when to change the nutrient ratios to promote a different stage of growth. I have an ENORMOUS tomato plant with no flowers!
The cheapest Ph down is 5% sulfuric acid (Battery acid}. In 16 gallons it would take less than 1 TBS to bring the Ph down. I used it in a test Greenhouse growing tomatoes. My family and I ate a bunch of tomatoes from that Greenhouse 5% sulfuric acid works with no problems.
Are you kidding!? Banana Plants blow up in my grow room. I grew them for fun two years ago, I had to move them out of the room because they crowded everything out. They were crazy.
Have four plants side by side in a straight line - one squash has one female flower developing - am experiencing "Silverleaf" issues with two of the four that just happen to be on the end of the line on both sides. Weird.....
What interests me about indoor veg gardening is the climate control. You can grow them in exactly the climate you want, just the right amount of light, just the right amount of nutrients, and have so much control over the growth. Outdoors, there are so many variables and so much out of your control.

Really interesting but I love how you are involving your daughter

Ken Robb Socrates is an awesome variety!!!
great video. I am so glad you showed squash hydroponic. I have always had insect problems to the point I just pull them.
Those plants look amazing! Don't get cocky on the powdery mildew though. That stuff is relentless on the cucurbits.
those roots from the cucumbers were insane.

Your version of Vanna White is much better than the Wheel Of Fortune version!
Great job to the both of you.
Chuck
Great job. I'd have a hard time cutting those cucumbers. I'm about to ramp up my basement growing from just seedlings to full grown veggies.

I literally just shot that video!!! It'll be out this weekend.
Can you explain a little about how you secured the cucumber vines? It looks like you have them wired up?
RhondaK I literally secured some twine to an O-hook to my ceiling rafter, and started training the vines up the twine. Basically just twisting it around the twine. The tendrils gripped it as well. It worked out decent.
Is it possible to do this outdoors with sunlight? I don't have soil space.

Wow, you clever boy! Wonderful looking squash. BUT WHERE IS MY BABY BUBBA OKRA PLANTS?
The plant is amazing, but the flowers only open for an hour and they hard to hit it right to pollinate.
How long did it take for the squash to grow?
I wonder if you can grow palm trees and banana plants hydroponically. I would turn my basement into a tropical oasis. =P
Are you kidding!? Banana Plants blow up in my grow room. I grew them for fun two years ago, I had to move them out of the room because they crowded everything out. They were crazy.
did you actually get harvest-able squash to grow under indoor lighting on this?
Yes sir.
Have four plants side by side in a straight line - one squash has one female flower developing - am experiencing "Silverleaf" issues with two of the four that just happen to be on the end of the line on both sides. Weird.....
Do you always do 18 hours of light?
Very cool setup. You think it would work as well completely kratky?
Yes, you can grow it using Kratky method.

did you grow those cucumbers with just calMag ??
No no. I used grow and bloom formulas. The cal mag was to prevent blossom end rot. It’s an important additive when growing hydroponically.
