While there are way more similarities between Lightroom Desktop and Mobile than there are differences, there are five key areas where Lightroom Desktop is superior and that photographers should be aware of.

Thanks ..it reconfirms to me that editing in LR on my ipad 12.9 pro would be frustrating .

I wanted to pick up the iPad Pro for on the road real estate shoots and edits but I need stacking. The lack of being able to auto stack by capture time and create HDR is a deal breaker 👎

    Thanks, Brian.
One of the more frustrating (and curious) gaps in mobile is lack of intersect function in masking. Very powerful to mask within a mask, frustrating in its absence.
I would also add mobile’s lack of color calibration and mask curves to this list. More inclined to accept their absence on a smartphone, not on a tablet. 🧐

My pleasure, Jay. Regarding the Intersect functionality on mobile, you'll be happy to know that you can apply it. It's just not explicitly labeled as such. Check out this video I shared a while back, where I walk you through exactly how to simulate the intersect functionality on the iPhone (which would work exactly the same on the iPad). th-cam.com/video/N8WywHJQANA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6fASiyjXdqppN2a7&t=793
As far as a lack of color calibration on mobile devices... I wouldn't ever expect that. I remember many years ago, X-Rite Photo released an app that was supposed to allow you to configure more accurate color calibration, but it was so cumbersome to use that it never went anywhere. I just factor in that my photos and videos will look a bit different on mobile devices despite my best editing efforts on desktop.
However, the lack of curves adjustments in masks... I am 100% with you there. I hope it's just a matter of when we see that, not if we'll see it. I can't think of a technical limitation that'd prevent Adobe from adding it in.

Hi Brian, I am like you hoping that Adobe will add some of those features you mentioned in this latest video. An issue I currently have is that the Sony A6700 is not recognized formate for Denoise with Lightroom (Desktop) unless I am missing something. Now Denoise with Lightroom Classic works with A6700. No issues with either program when the image is from my Sony A7RV. One feature I miss when using my iPad Pro (M2) is not having the access to plugins. With Lightroom Desktop I can go through Photoshop. Maybe in the future we will see useful plugins come to the iPad that will work with Lightroom Mobile. On another note I am looking forward to your Lightroom Everywhere. Cheers!

Hmmmmmm.... the a6700 issue with Denoise and LR is very odd. Feel free to email me a RAW file and I'll test it out on my computer. That just doesn't sound right.
As for plugins with LR on the iPad... I suppose it's possible, but I'm not sure how feasible it'd be. If I could just get Photo Merge and Denoise in LR Mobile, I'd be a very happy camper. Well, that and stacking.
As for Lightroom Everywhere, it's just about done! All of the videos have been recorded and I have just a few more to edit before releasing it. It will definitely be released by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. I think the course currently weighs in at about 43 videos, so there will be A LOT to learn and enjoy.

Hi Brian, can I fix converging lines of buildings in Lightroom on my iPad Pro? I have gone into ‘Geometry’ but can’t see how to ‘square up’ the front of a building.
    Thanks Chris, Adelaide, Australia

Hey Chris. Yup, you can specify which lines should be vertical and horizontal to achieve rectilinear lines on the iPad. To do that, go to the Geometry section, enable the Upright switch, then select "Guided" from the dropdown menu, and use your finger (or Apple Pencil) to draw lines along those that should be properly vertical and horizontal. Mind you, Lightroom needs at least two of those guided lines in order to correct the geometry. I hope that helps!

Enjoy your content and look forward to each video. That said, forgive me if this is a dumb question but did I understand in the video that LR (cloud version) has applications if your using a Macbook that would not be on the IPad Pro. So, if I understand I could use the new denoise feature on the Macbook and not have to use LR classic. I’m currently on the LR cloud with 1TB and would purchase a Macbook if I could use what my current subscription. Hope this was clear and I look forward to your reply.
    Thank you.

Hey Fred. Not a dumb question at all! You are correct. The desktop version of Lightroom does have the new Denoise AI feature, just like Lightroom Classic. With that said, it only works on RAW files and certain types of DNG files. And it is available for Lightroom Desktop only... not on the iPad or iPhone. But, I'm hoping that'll change eventually. I hope that helps clarify things.

Thanks Brian. That information is a big help.I’ve hesitated on buying a MacBook and then a different version of Lightroom. I’ll now be able to use the Lightroom app that I already have. Thank you again for such a quick response. Even though you are causing me to go out and get a MacBook. :) :)

Yeah, this is a subject that has been a bit of a sore point with me over last 4-5 years. While I do have a Mac (desktop Mac Mini M2), much of my work entails me being on the road, thus I bring along one of my trusty iPad Pros for editing. IMHO, the iPad is the greatest device to ever come out of Cupertino, a device that in recent years has shown the possibility of becoming a world-class editing tool, only to be crippled by it’s creators. I also in part fault Adobe for not following through on their promise to create a mobile version of Lightroom that would be equal to that of ‘Classic’. With the silicon-powered pads, why Adobe is slow-walking LR’s upgrades to match all the tools and tricks that we love and desire in ‘Classic’, is beyond me. The only reason that I have stayed with Adobe this long is the eco-system and the linking of all my devices, seamlessly. If ON1, Cap1, Topaz, etc.… were to create a similar, reliable setup that Adobe currently enjoys, I’d be gone in a flash.

Everything you're saying is on point and rational in my book. I don't think your expectations are unreasonable either. With that said, I do want to give Adobe some credit because Lightroom really is quite amazing on the iPad. And sure, some of the limitations are probably imposed by Apple. Like, why can't I use an external drive to manage photos in LR on the iPad while traveling until I can get home and sync? I am hopeful after seeing the iPhone 15 Pro write to an external drive using Capture One that Adobe will do something similar. I feel like that was a huge miss on Adobe's part not to be the first to the plate with that, but that's business. And I'm hoping to see expanded external drive support with the iPad next year.
For me, I'm way too locked into Adobe's ecosystem to consider changing. It was bad enough when I switched from LR back to Classic about two years ago and had to switch back. We'll see, though. There's nothing like some healthy competition to force companies to innovate more rapidly.
