Mountain Biking in San Francisco - Mount Sutro (Trail Guide)

- This is a comprehensive trail guide of San Francisco's Mt. Sutro Park located behind UCSF. This park is on the small side, but again, it is in the heart of SF! The descents are pretty smooth with the occasional switchback to mix things up. These trails were really fun and I definitely recommend them if you are in the area.

trail. it actually looks fun for a quick afternwork ride. the best part is, i don't even have to drive
I saw this video maybe a year or two ago. Watching it again just now totally reminded me.
It's kind of fascinating to find this kind of forestry right smack in the middle of such a compact, bustling city.
Damn...wish I knew those were there when I was there last fall. I ended up renting a bike and riding from Mission over to Marin and back. Still a fun time, but it would have been cool to have some dirt underneath me. ...next time.
Lots of mellow singletrack in golden gate park also, just stick close to the outside edges of the park and you'll find it.

Your idea of mountain biking, and probably everyone else's too, is to blitz through. My idea is to make the ride last as long as possible and see as much as I can. So when you blitz past me that's what I'm doing. I see rattlers and coyotes all the time depending on the season and once years ago I ran into a mountain lion. There is a lot to see when you slow down and look around. Oh and in the Spring. WOW

I rode this last weekend. There is some (what I consider) pretty tough chunky stuff in the first part of the Trail. I had to get off and walk it for a few feet. I noticed that part was left out of your video.

You can combine this with the San Miguel Hills Loop in to get even more XC-style singletrack in (about 6 miles worth in total):

Note: the East Ridge trail in the video is currently closed because of tree falls. You can do North Ridge to Mystery Trail on the second descent to pick up the San Miguel Hills Loop at the Gash.

There was a nike missile base that used nuclear missiles in back up the hill of the medical student housing off of clarendon, and all that area you guys were riding had signs US ARMY NO TRESPASSING in the 60s and 70s and today there is no mention of it.

Thanks for not outing Mt Davidson the better of the 2 spots. The amount of hipsters on gravel bikes within the cities trail systems is at critical mass.
I start on Portola ave cut to Marn then you had up Junita and head toward Mt Davison then on to twin peaks. there is a little cut through that connect to Sutro. then you take the trail down that leads to the stairs where you started and then you head down the road(bombing) to GG Park then you can find the trail head through the park to the beach

No. The top is only accessible to vehicles that are doing maintenence of the forest. The closest point for a regular vehicle is the end of Johnstone Dr (IIRC there is parking for UCSF residences there). It's a quick cycle to the top either by the fire-road or Quary Rd Trail to South Ridge (off-road). You can see the fire-road in the video when he gets to the top.
The ride is very quick and doable though, so I recommend cycling it. If you have a heavy bike (like a downhill), this route is too short and twisty to be worth the effort on a bike like that.
Any suggestions for beginner trails!?
In the city limits:
Golden Gate Park. In difficulty from absolute beginner -> beginner:
1) The Northwest side and most of the inside of the park (esp. around Polo Grounds). These are very wide, fire-roadesqe mixed-use paths that run parallel to the roads.
2) There is some flowy, flat singletrack on the outer south side (going west).
3) There's a beginner, twisty singletrack on the northwest between JFK+Conservatory drive and the Horsesshoe pits (that's an official MTB trail, the rest is mixed use/unofficial).
4) The north edge has some rooty single-track which shouldn't be a problem for a beginner MTB with front suspension. One part is off-limits to bikes, but you will see signs.
^^ All of the above is easier than Mt. Sutro which itself is considered Beginner/Intermediate - doable by any bike (I do it on my gravel bike) as long as you take it slow.
John McClaren Park has a lot of wide beginner trails as part of Philosopher's way and I heard it has a bike skills park.
Outside the city:
Marin and Mt. Tam is full of beginner MTB paths as a lot of the main routes are fire roads and are wide open to mountain bicycles. For Mt. Tam in particular, there is Old Railroad Grade. The closest to the city is just about 2/3 of the way up Hawk Hill on the other side of Golden Gate Bridge (Coastal Trail, just behind the roundabout). It's easy until you get to the bottom, just slow down because the rain runnoff can edge a creek bed across the path). c.f. www.mtbproject.com/directory/8012162/marin-county

@6:29 If that was all the hoses in the city I doubt it would even be called a city. That's inter sunset, the park and a bit of the richmond. Please if your going to live here at least know the neighborhoods.
