Something to add to Gunbreaker skills, in PvP they have an action called "Draw & Junction". When used it grants the gunbreaker buffs and ability changes depending on the role the skill is used on as they're effectively "junctioning" that role.
Good stuff man! The only thing I can think of that was missed was the Ragnarok class Allagan ships which share a lot of resemblance to the FF8 Ragnarok design. You can see a few of them on Mare Lamentorum and referenced in the Binding Coil raids
Yeah the Ragnarok class ships were used to bring Bahamut into space and to build his prison of Dalamund, much in the same way the Ragnaroks were used to send and imprision Sorcoress Adell in FF8.
I heard "Blue Fields" and I felt transported back to my parent's house living room, sitting on the couch on a Saturday morning. I've played the game since, but this was my first real FF game and that brings it all back.
FFVIII will always be one of my personal favorites of the entire FF series, and when I got to Shadowbringers and did the Eden raids, I was overwhelmed with nostalgic tears hearing Blue Fields for the first time. They really knocked it out of the park with the raid series, and I screamed with glee watching Eternal Breath play out in HD.
The 4 battles of the final Eden raid tier can be loosely mapped to the 4 phases of the battle with Ultimecia. 1. basic Ultimecia/Cloud of Darkness: a scantily clad magic user woman in a red/black/white color scheme. 2. Griever/Shadowkeeper: a large leonine or vulpine beast covered in dark fur. 3. merged Ultimecia-Griever/Fatebreaker: previously encountered entities mashed together. 4: final Ultimecia/Eden's Promise: a surreal, vaguely humanoid figure
One thing to add: An NPC in the new Hildi Questline writes for an ocult magazine, referencing to the same magazines found in FF8 which are needed to get Doomtrain GF
Something pretty minor, but another Ultimecia reference during the Oracle of Darkness fight is whenever she casts one of her "main mechanics" (Basic Relativity, Intermediate Relativity, Advanced Relativity and Terminal Relativity) small text at the bottom of the screen flashes up saying "Time is being compressed!" like how Ultimecia's end goal is to commit time compression. As well, her secondary mechanics (Singular Apocalypse, Dual Apocalypse and Triple Apocalypse) are the same name as the "Apocalypse" spell that, coincidentally, can be drawn from Ultimecia.
Aside from the bit of flavour text, one of Gaia’s recurring spells that she uses during the raids is Spell in Waiting (Delay in Japanese), which slows down time
One thing that is also worth noting is that the Mitron’s true name being Artemis could be seen as a reference to Ultimecia as her name in the west could be a mistranslation of Artemisia which adds to the FFVIII references in Eden and is a possible real world base for part of the design for Eden’s Promise.
Was just about to comment this, as Ultimecia's name on katakana is roughlt "Arutimishia", and would more closely translate to "Artemisia" than "Ultimecia". Artemis' name is certainly a direct reference to this, as it's "Arutemis"

There is a reference you missed in the last boss of the Eden raids. Eden's Promise takes a shape inspired by a statue of the Greek goddess Artemis (which also ends up being the name of Mitron). This is a reference to Ultimecia who is usually translated from Japanese as Artemisa in most languages except English. It's debated whether or not Ultimecia's name is mistranslated in English since her name is pronounced as "Aru Ti Me Shi Ah" in Japanese, which could be interpreted in either way
I always thought the Garleans' vehicles, machines, etc bear a strong resemblance to those of Galbadia. They even have robot spiders that remind me of the one that chases Squall's squad during the escape from Dollet. All-in-all, I've always been a huge FF8 fan since childhood, and seeing so many references to it, especially during the Eden raids, made me fangirl like never before x)
I'm one of the few FF8 diehards (I guess it just came out at the right point in my life idk) so this is very much the video I'd been waiting for. I lost my flipping *mind* at the ShB raid content.
This is very well done. One thing I have never seen people notice though is The Burn, right before Shadowbringers. At the end of The Burn, the main cast install a barrier that is mostly invisible. The Burn is similar to the area before Esthar. Esthar is protected by a barrier that is otherwise invisible. Considering that it shows up not long before the expansion that is essentially FFVIII related, I feel that this design was intentional. Though I imagine most people don't think of this because of the Mist Dragon being from FFIV.
In the Eden raids, there's a weird, complicated reference to Ultimecia in Mitron's true name, Artemis. In the original Japanese version of VIII and some translations, namely Spanish, Ultimecia's name is *Arutimishia (アルティミシア),* which correlates to "*rtemis (アルテミス, Arutemisu).* The Spanish version of FFVIII even translates Ultimecia's name as *Artemisa.*
Something not immediately obvious is that the Lv 70 Gunbreaker ability “Continuation” comes from Squall’s Limit Break Renzokuken (Continuous Sword) In FF8, the trigger minigame attached to Squall’s LBs is translated into FF14 by having to repeatedly use Continuation immediately after your special attacks
Post-Dawntrail addition to Gunbreaker's kit if you ever update this: The combo actions after Bloodfest, when taken together, look like Squall's Lion Heart limit break.
You’re doing a great job on this series. I think It would interesting (but probably also daunting) if you did a video of pop culture references in FFXIV
FFVIII is so underrated. I don’t necessarily like the trend of FF games set in “modernized” worlds, or rather, I think far too many of them have tried and done it rather poorly, and *fantasy* should be the primary identity of the franchise given that it’s IN THE NAME, but FFVIII really did set the stage that FFVII built, and I think that any “modernized” FF should really look to VIII as a model.

While we are on the subject of ability references with the Gunbreaker, the concept behind the Wildfire ability of the Machinist is literally Lagunas Limit Break. Throw a bomb and then let hell loose until it explodes. :3 Edit: Also, in the Design of Eden's Promise (the boss) the bottom half has similarities with Ultimecias final form.
I know there was a song during the raid cutscenes too but I dont think there is an orchrestion roll for it (yet?). But if I recall it was a version of balamb garden. Im not sure which cutscene was but I believe it was one of the final ones involving Gaia and Ryne

Well presented, buuuut I do feel that you kinda missed a major thing about E9S to E12S, the 3rd tier of the raid. There is a BIG theming that I feel doesn't get noticed often. Hear me out now, In FF8 the final fight is arenged as such, you start of against the female sorceress Ultimecia (a hot woman in very hot outfit, yes), after beaten, she releases her guardian force, Greaver, a beast. That is stages 1 and 2, on starge 3, she fuses with Greaver and on stage 4, she releases her ultimate form. All of these stages are basicly Eden fights 9 to 12. In FF14 you Eden 9 you fight Cloud of Darkness, a hot woman wearing almost nothing. In Eden 10, you fight the Shadowbeast, a beast called to fight. Eden 10 you fight a fused abomination of memories, the Dad, the Baddy and the beast of the Baddy. and finaly Eden 12 you fight a ultimate form of Gaia's "promise". In savage of 12 you actually have the second form that really brings out the Final Fantasy 8. Thanks for the video.
2 quick things. Technically the first Gunblade in the game was from the Lightning Returns crossover way back in 2013. It was available to Paladins back then. Second - The Voidwalker boss from Eden Floor 2 holds on to Gaia in a very similar fashion to the way that Adel holds on to Rinoa.

The earliest reference to the Ragnarok airship is actually Nero’s helmet back in 2.0 (unsure if this was referenced in 1.x or not) FFVIII’s Ragnarok is my favorite airship so far.
I was just going to write this lol, I think they were giving nero a norse theme, with armour based off off ragnarok, and his hammer was called mjolnir.
One of the songs you might have glossed over was Ami, it's a track from FFVIII and it plays at the end of the the Eden's Verse raids. It's one of my favorite FFVIII pieces.

Also while I played Eden I recall telling my friends that Eden is literally a Garden. And yes, the new Hildebrand quests is a fun nod. i wonder what else they will bring

At the end of Endwalker, The Ragnarok flies over Erozea, Doma and Sharylian. When all the people look up at the ship reminds me of the ending of ff8 when the sub characters are looking at the Balamb Garden airship as it flies by each section with the song, "Eyes On Me" before the closing credits. Yet, I wonder with the ending of Endwalker of how many Final Fantasy references are within the 1 segment. I could see FF7 and FF9.
Theres a line where Gaia says "Anyway, it might even make a nice necklace" which *could* be a reference to Squall's ring that Rinoa wears as a necklace.
I always felt the aetherytes in shadowbringers looked like the balamb garden a bit. a large floating piece with a smaller rotating one keeping it up. even the shape of the larger piece looks a bit like the garden to me with a long tail on one side.
i think the basic and advance relativity attack of gaia in e12s raid is direct reference to the time compress in FF8, even the chant when she doing it similiar
There is another thing you miss based on translation. Ultimecia's name in Japanese is closer direct translated to Artemisia. While the Ascian Loghriff's name is Gaia, The Ascian Mitron's name was Artemis. During the Fight, The Oracle of Darkness uses Ultimecia's planned Time Compression to cause wacky time hijinks during the fight, rewinding and fast forwarding you to different locations you have to set and mark with specific movements.
I was going to mention Angelo being female, but someone already did. Only thing that's missing is Liberti Fatali plays during the transition between E12S's phases
As ffxiv is my first FF game, when I go back to playing the other ones its going to be really odd hearing a song and going like “OH SHIT ITS (x)” this video reinforced that.
During the cutscene you get after you beat the 8th floor of Eden. Which is Ryne over taken by the memories of Shiva. When Gaia and Ryne are talking, Ami from FF8 plays very subtlely in the background.
There are a lot of things, for me, FF8 stands out above the rest of the series like he summons which FF8 has the best arts for them, and that Force Your Way, the dissidia version particularly, is the best rearranged soundtrack

I'm pretty sure the running animation used in crystaline conflict for gnb is a nod to the way seifer runs throughout the dollet town mission.
Pretty sure Eyes on Me is not a reference to the FFVIII song but rather an attack that Ahriman enemies have in FFXI.
11 is after 8, so they are probably BOTH references.

At the end of Endwalker, The Ragnarok flies over Erozea, Doma and Sharylian. When all the people look up at the ship reminds me of the ending of ff8 when the sub characters are looking at the Balamb Garden airship as it flies by each section with the song, "Eyes On Me" before the closing credits. Yet, I wonder with the ending of Endwalker of how many Final Fantasy references are within the 1 segment. I could see FF7 and FF9.
Idk if anyone's mentioned yet, but the music in Eulmore resembles Waltz for the Moon when it starts!
Gaia's makeup is similar to Edea's. Her color scheme over all seems to favor her even though she's using Ultimecia's powers.

I love that 14 references some of the more obscure titles in the series like 3, 8 or 12 rather than something like 7 or 10.
Theres a line where Gaia says "Anyway, it might even make a nice necklace" which *could* be a reference to Squall's ring that Rinoa wears as a necklace.

Just a reference. Gaia being inside the voidwalker in E2 raid tier, is a similar reference to Rinoa being inside Adel in FF8.
I always felt the aetherytes in shadowbringers looked like the balamb garden a bit. a large floating piece with a smaller rotating one keeping it up. even the shape of the larger piece looks a bit like the garden to me with a long tail on one side.

i think the basic and advance relativity attack of gaia in e12s raid is direct reference to the time compress in FF8, even the chant when she doing it similiar
There is another thing you miss based on translation. Ultimecia's name in Japanese is closer direct translated to Artemisia. While the Ascian Loghriff's name is Gaia, The Ascian Mitron's name was Artemis. During the Fight, The Oracle of Darkness uses Ultimecia's planned Time Compression to cause wacky time hijinks during the fight, rewinding and fast forwarding you to different locations you have to set and mark with specific movements.

As ffxiv is my first FF game, when I go back to playing the other ones its going to be really odd hearing a song and going like “OH SHIT ITS (x)” this video reinforced that.

During the cutscene you get after you beat the 8th floor of Eden. Which is Ryne over taken by the memories of Shiva. When Gaia and Ryne are talking, Ami from FF8 plays very subtlely in the background.

There are a lot of things, for me, FF8 stands out above the rest of the series like he summons which FF8 has the best arts for them, and that Force Your Way, the dissidia version particularly, is the best rearranged soundtrack
