Kurt Russell is SO GOOD in this role. Perfect American braggadocio with technical ineptitude and courage and heart and humor beneath. The movie is an abolute gem.
Those along with Flash Gordon (1980) and Zorro the Gay Blade (1981) were my favorite campy classics as a kid. These are the years we first ever got HBO and I’d watch them every time they were on lol
I have been a fan of James Hong FOR YEARS , he finally got an honorary Star on the walk of fame . He was "the Asian guy" in about a billion films not to forget Kung Fu appearances . An UNSUNG Acting Trailblazer.
Have the movie on my hard drive, and must've watched it a few hundred times. It never gets old. Big Trouble in little China and the Thing are 2 of my all time favourite movies, and it's no surprise that Kurt Russel appears in both. He's an amazing actor. Kurt Russell, the late Bill Paxton, Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood are my all time favourite actors
I worked with Victor Wong on the film “Tremors”. He was a great guy. According to him, he helped Carpenter out with some of the China Town stuff, being an SF native.
yep, Wang is the actual primary Hero since it's his quest to save his bride from Lo Pan. Jack's truck being stolen and Gracie also being kidnapped the unfortunate situations that dragged Jack into it. It was always Wang's quest. We just watch it from Jack's perspective.
Easily my top favorite 80s movie of all time. Loved it from start to finish. Carpenter balanced everything incredibly well to the action, comedy, fantasy, and fight choreography down to a tee. Just like Jack Burton says... "It's all in the reflexes" 😎
Watched it 2 nights ago for the 1000th time. I was born in 1986, I remember the first time watching as a little kid late night on a old school movie matinee. Classic!
Just one of the greatest movies ever made. Fantastic performances all around. Smart, surprising, hilarious. Has the right tone to actually age well, which you would think impossible considering the setting and the time.
This is a fantastic 80s movie. The escalator was purchased from my college while I was there. Hope International University in Fullerton, CA, is in an old shopping center. The escalators were used only as stairs and were then replaced by stairs as part of the deal.
During the pandemic, my teenage son and I watched a lot of 80s movies that I originally watched at his age. This was his favorite beating out Predator and Terminator among others!
I love u for the Mortal kombat shout out!!!! Anyone ever noticed Raiden’s big hat or lighting eye flash or the lighting pole know it only had one source .
If you just watched with the commentary on you’d know a bunch of these. Russell and Carpenter give one of the more entertaining commentaries I’ve listen to for a movie on Big Trouble in Little China.
In 86, I was 5 years old and my family rarely went to the movies. So when my father dragged all of us (my 2yr old brother included) it was a special treat. WOW, my 5 year old self was not disappointed and I was doing kung fu moves at home for the next few weeks. This film is a definite classic.
I always thought the best line in the movie is Jack saying "It's all in the reflexes." after he catches the knife and throws it back at Lo Pan with it landing in the middle of his forehead.
So many folks not only don't get that but adamantly refuse to accept or understand this. Even though Carpenter has explained this repeatedly and even in the movie's commentary and the BTS literature released with the movie, they still refuse to accept it.
Carpenter and Russell made two almost perfect movies around that time, this one and the Thing. I was never a fan of Escape from NY but I wonder now how I would like it. It was similar to the film noir style of Big Trouble and campy as well.
My favorite aspect of Big Trouble In Little China is that Jack isn't the primary hero of the story. While Jack is one of the main protagonists and the audience perspective character, it's actually Wang's heroic quest. Jack is the bumbling comedic relief sidekick who provides the audience a viewpoint from an outsider's point of view.
This is one of my alltime fave movies. Im 59 and grew up loving this movie and my boys, both in their 20s love it. I tried to get some 20 somethings i work with to watch it. They thought it was horrible. I guess no overdone computer animation is not there thing. I tried.
I was wondering about the bit in the video where he says the big trouble video game went on to inspire Mortal Kombat. I disagreed with that, but I definitely see how Raiden was inspired by the lightning henchman from big trouble, so I understand now. I remember being a big Jean Claude van Damme fan in the 80s and realizing how the Johnny Cage character was inspired by JCVD's Frank Dux in the movie Bloodsport.
I despised this movie when it came out, but oh man did it grow on me to become one of my most favorite movies of all time. And I'm so happy I snagged a copy of the board game when it came out - it was $80 then but now it's out of print and goes for four or more times that price. Plus, it's so much fun! Thanks for this video.
@@rockywatchesmovies If you ever get a chance to get a copy, definitely do it. Watch some of the review and playthrough videos on BoardGameGeek though to be sure. I love it, even did a review of it over on a site called Armchair Dragoons, a few years ago.
I'm old enough to have seen this in theaters and then later played the Mortal Combat games, immediately recognizing Lo-Pan as Shang Tsung and Lightening as Raiden. Sonya was also based on Cynthia Rothrock who was great in '90's martial art movies, all B rated of course but that takes nothing away from them IMO.
Still my favorite movie. Escape from New York right behind it. I loved Kurt Russell in these roles. Kim Cattrall was awesome in the role as well. I REALLY hope 'The Rock" is NOT the one who continues teh Silver Screen adventure. I really hope he has NOTHING to do with it. Anyone but him. He will only tarnish the greatness the original is.
It's a shame the studio screwed up the marketing. It deserved so much more attention than it got. I didn't even know it existed until I saw it on cable TV. Of course I watched it every time it came on. 😅 I loved Jack as a over confident dork who was not as skilled as he thought but still had enough guts to save the day.
They second-guessed so many of Carpenter's decisions, and every time his instincts were correct. I bet we'll be saying the same thing about Megalopolis decades from now.
Funny that the Eddie Murphy film out performed Big Trouble in Little China. I would guess that almost no one remembers that movie these days. I certainly didn't.
This is in my top one hundred movies and if you played mortal combat then you would know best line in this movie this is Jack Burton on the pork chop express great movie it's a cult classic now ❤❤❤😂
Love this movie still. Comedy and martial arts. The only comparison for me as I like serious martial arts movies with respect to Jackie Chan is Kung Fu Hustle. Special mention Kung Pow. And Kurt Russell was great. He and Sly Stallone were awesome in Tango & Cash!
Big Trouble In Little China! Oh what an absolute great movie it is! Love this movie!
It was a classic 80s chees movie
Basically you could sit down and zone out watching it
free on youtube with ads 💪
Same, movie to this day is one of my favorites.
Kurt Russell is SO GOOD in this role. Perfect American braggadocio with technical ineptitude and courage and heart and humor beneath. The movie is an abolute gem.
Classic 80’s movie. One of my favourites
Big Trouble in Little China and The Princess Bride are my two most favorite movies. The Fifth Element comes in a close third.
I'd rate those 3 in my top 5 as well 👍
Those along with Flash Gordon (1980) and Zorro the Gay Blade (1981) were my favorite campy classics as a kid. These are the years we first ever got HBO and I’d watch them every time they were on lol

Not to mention he’s 95 and still talking + looking pretty sharp!
Lo Pan "now this really pisses me off to no end". Classic line 😂
My fav line.

Absolutely love this movie
My all time favourite movie!
I worked with Victor Wong on the film “Tremors”. He was a great guy. According to him, he helped Carpenter out with some of the China Town stuff, being an SF native.
This was and still is a fantastic classic...a fan favorite for me.
Jack Burton isn't the hero, he's the sidekick! That's what makes this movie so funny and unique!

This movie brings a smile to my face whenever it pops up in conversations or in media. It's funny as hell.

"Who"? "Jack Burton me"
Timeless classic
It is one of my two all time favorites. The Treasure of Sierra Madre and Big Trouble in Little China.
I would absolutely watch a Wild West prequel!
This is a fantastic 80s movie. The escalator was purchased from my college while I was there. Hope International University in Fullerton, CA, is in an old shopping center. The escalators were used only as stairs and were then replaced by stairs as part of the deal.
Classic 80s movie magic 👌❤️
Awesome movie. I watched it over and over again several times. Kurt Russell was perfect.
Absolute banger of a movie❤
Nothin' or double, Jack.
One of the greatest movies ever.
One of the best. This movie had everything needed to be entertaining. Loved it
During the pandemic, my teenage son and I watched a lot of 80s movies that I originally watched at his age. This was his favorite beating out Predator and Terminator among others!
As brilliant as Big Trouble is, gotta love the Golden Child too. Still have it on vhs
I loved this movie and followed it in every direction
I actually got to see this in the cinema when it first came out (and I'm showing my age now) and it's one of my favourite movies.
I love this movie, watched it over and over as a kid. I was also a fan of Carter Wong from all his other movies, he is in so many cult classics.
"May the wings of liberty never lose a feather."
Too late, a long time ago.. but this movie still rules, and so does that quote 😎
@@gm9984 sadly, you are correct.
One of the best movies of its time. Highly underrated. It’s not an 80s movie per se. It’s kinda timeless.
I love u for the Mortal kombat shout out!!!! Anyone ever noticed Raiden’s big hat or lighting eye flash or the lighting pole know it only had one source .
Such a great movie! One of my favorites! Now if we could get a modern day side scrolling beat em up game of this movie my life would be complete!
This movie is on my always watch list, seriously under rated at the time.
If you just watched with the commentary on you’d know a bunch of these. Russell and Carpenter give one of the more entertaining commentaries I’ve listen to for a movie on Big Trouble in Little China.

Literally put it on last night 😅💚💪😎💯
Great vid, 😂 Who...Jack Burton, me. Classic.
Jack Burton was not the hero, he was the comedy sidekick. It’s why I love it so much. Wang Chi was the hero
So many folks not only don't get that but adamantly refuse to accept or understand this. Even though Carpenter has explained this repeatedly and even in the movie's commentary and the BTS literature released with the movie, they still refuse to accept it.
But Jack Burton was a legend…in his own mind😂
It was a great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am sad that it underperformed at the box office.
Rocky Watches Movies!!! This was AWESOME! Please consider reviewing "Phantom of the Paradise" !! Another cult classic IMHO.
Carpenter and Russell made two almost perfect movies around that time, this one and the Thing. I was never a fan of Escape from NY but I wonder now how I would like it. It was similar to the film noir style of Big Trouble and campy as well.
I met grandmaster Carter Wong over 30 years ago. He is such a nice down to earth guy.
My favorite aspect of Big Trouble In Little China is that Jack isn't the primary hero of the story. Google translate doesn't always work. The title translation is actually really good. "Evil Spirit Creates Huge Trouble in little China".
Rocky presents Jack Burton? Instant watch!!
It really is a shame this movie bombed. I absolutely love it! Total Classic.
I’m going to watch it right now
Really good one this time, RWM! Jackie Chan in this film would have been wild!
First time viewer! Good job! I subscribed and now I’m commenting!
The music video with John Carpenter is hilarious

The guy in the outfit at 1:30 was the inspiration for Raiden in Mortal Kombat! Fact.

This movie and The Fog(both versions) are still a Guilty Pleasure!
#21. Carter Wong (Thunder) was a huge star in the Shaw Brothers' kung-fu films of the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s, and was usually a "bad guy." 🙂
5:50 I saw it in theater in 1986 by accident. Never saw it advertised. Saw poster in theater lobby and waltzed in.
Loved this movie

Still wish they had made a second movie.
Funny that the Eddie Murphy film out performed Big Trouble in Little China. I would guess that almost no one remembers that movie these days. I certainly didn't.
We absolutely loved this movie when we were kids, and then when Mortal Kombat came out we thought they stoke the idea for Raiden from this movie.

Jack carrying saddlebags, early in the film, was left in the script from the original Western story.
