I would argue that her telling her husband he doesn't have a real job and that she already wants to retire is more evidence that she is lazy-minded than not. More than likely, her kids are adults or not very dependent on either one of them, based on their age and her desire to retire. It seems selfish to me, expecting one to provide college funds and not wanting to chip in. Just buy your own health insurance, max out your IRA every year and on top of that put money into an individual stock account because you can afford it. If you invested 10% of your income into the S&P 500, you will have almost $10M in 40 years. 15% of your income About $14M and 20% of your income almost $20M in 40 years. I’m not sure what a pension is, but I’m I’m pretty sure it’s not $10M - $20M.

The ONLY disadvantage is that you forgo your "safety." If you forgo your standard career path, then you don't have those "years of experience" and therefore becomes harder to get a job in your chosen career down the road. Other than that, I 100% agree, it's better to be self-employed and be able to do things for less hours. Time is invaluable.

The 5 stages describe what stage you are in with your business. It does not necessarily mean that you have to go to the next stage, but it gives an understanding of what is required from you if you are in a particular stage. The first stage is Treadmill Operator. Go look it up. Unless I am wrong, and this guy is actually involved in treadmills, then its the guy simply saying, "treadmill operator," to describe how he runs the business.

Me and my wife switched back and forth at least 4 times being the breadwinner. It doesn’t mean a damn thing to either one of us. We work as a team. Teachers work far more than a 9-5 job. We take our work home with us. We work weekends. And yes, surprise! We work during our summers off. I have worked retail for 19 years and am a teacher. Yes, I get the holidays off. But, I work far more as a teacher.
I think what both sides of this thread font realize is that right now, she's doing both. She has the 24-7 stress of being responsible for the retail store (even if she's not there at the time) AND she's working as a teacher, with all the after-hours work involved. And yes, majority of teachers DO get summers off, spring break, winter break, every weekend off, every holiday off, and majority really don't teach the entire 9-5 hours as they often have blocks with no classes to teach where then the organized teachers will efficiently grade/prep while on the job. Nonetheless, working as a teacher is severely easier than working an 80 hour a week hard labour job that sometimes includes working outdoors in varying weather. Let's be real.

Need to simplify their life and that will reduce the stress. Here is my advice: 1. Sell the store - not making much $ on that, probably not worth the stress especially with the wife having some involvement. 2. Get the wife on some anxiety medicine. 3. Keep the $150K/year gravy job. 4. Tell the wife tough luck, you get all nights, weekends, holidays, summers off as a teacher plus huge tuition discount for the kids, medical insurance, retirement, etc.... 5. If she insists on quitting teaching then tell her what you will have to give up with 'only' $150K salary. Details on that would have to be looked at by them based on spending habits, debts, etc...they might not be able to afford private school, fancy cars, fancy vacations, or whatever they might spend $ on.

@@michaelsorensen7567 He works there once a week for 6 hours, she works there 8 hours a month so (52x6) + (8x12) = 408 hours worked by them per year at $50K profit is $122/hr profit for their labor which is still nice but not $520/hr. The primary problem is the huge stress level it brings the wife to be involved in it. How do you calculate a cost there? With the guy already making $150-200K and the wife making say $50K to be a teacher then you are talking about going from $200-250K to $250-300K but the wife dealing with much more stress. Do they really need that to add 20% extra income when they already make $200K+? Also, they own that business, so maybe they are able to sell it off for a nice chunk of change and put that towards the kids school, etc... Having 20 employees can lead to a lot of personnel issues for various reasons not to mention gossip and drama which I suspect is part of the stress on the wife. I maintain strongly that they need to jettison that business and it isn't worth their time given everything I'm hearing.

probably not. Good insurance for a family of 4 could easily be $2000 per month. That's still a significant amount of money at that salary. They're probably only paying $400 at her job. You'd also have to consider her lose of income when she quits.
People who don't make $200k think it goes much further than it actually does. I've been homeless and I've been rich, so I know what they both feel like.
Fortunately, my spouse and I were able to pay off our mortgage early. While we were both still employed, we took the money we had been using to accelerate our mortgage repayment and invested it immediately. Thanks to nearly 7 years of saving what would have been our mortgage payment and to maxing out our 401K/403B plans, we were able to retire early. Fortunately, both of our parents instilled in us the need of living within our means.

Women value stability and predictability. A lot of women would be more comfortable with a husband in corporate america making 100k than an entrepreneur husband making 150-200k because the 100 is more stable and predictable. That's just how they are wired. Acknowledge their concerns, save and invest money to show them you have a cushion, and then keep chasing your dream ;)

No 'job' in corporate America is stable. His business is 99% stable and his income is predictable... $150k a year.. if he makes $200k then great, but $150k is very predictable for him. He could make even more if he worked 5 days a week or if it's a slow year, he could work 1 more day a week to make up for it. So his current business is 99% stable and so is his income. I've been in business right at 30 years. Corporate America is about 50% stable if that, depending on your company and boss.

I agree. The kid has 5 years at most. They aren't considering the tuition cut or healthcare as lost compensation either. Private school tuition is like $30-60k, and another $7k for private health insurance. It will cost them twice her salary to quit the school. Sell the store, use the money to buy a beach house and rent it out for the five years - should cover the missing store income. Have the wife work at the school until the youngest graduates, and then retire off of his treadmill operator income at the paid off beach house.
In my experience, when people tell me "You don't have a real job." (and I have had many, MANY people tell me that) what they mean is "You need to hate your job like I do, because I don't want to be miserable alone."

This way he could go to the us for treatment with specialist in his field. With most of his treatment being cover through the insurance. They had about 50 employees at the time. It can also be a bonus when hiring.

Just buy your own health insurance, max out your IRA every year and on top of that put money into an individual stock account because you can afford it. @@HilltopperTA No. Look up EntreLeadership on Ramseysolutions which is a book but also is his analysis on business which he breaks up into 5 stages. The 5 stages describe what stage you are in with your business. It does not necessarily mean that you have to go to the next stage, but it gives an understanding of what is required from you if you are in a particular stage.
The first stage is Treadmill Operator. Go look it up.
Unless I am wrong, and this guy is actually involved in treadmills, then its the guy simply saying, "treadmill operator," to describe how he runs the business.

I think what both sides of this thread font realize is that right now, she's doing both. She has the 24-7 stress of being responsible for the retail store (even if she's not there at the time) AND she's working as a teacher, with all the after-hours work involved. And yes, majority of teachers DO get summers off, spring break, winter break, every weekend off, every holiday off, and majority really don't teach the entire 9-5 hours as they often have blocks with no classes to teach where then the organized teachers will efficiently grade/prep while on the job. Nonetheless, working as a teacher is severely easier than working an 80 hour a week hard labour job that sometimes includes working outdoors in varying weather.

Need to simplify their life and that will reduce the stress. Here is my advice: 1. Sell the store - not making much $ on that, probably not worth the stress especially with the wife having some involvement. 2. Get the wife on some anxiety medicine. 3. Keep the $150K/year gravy job. 4. Tell the wife tough luck, you get all nights, weekends, holidays, summers off as a teacher plus huge tuition discount for the kids, medical insurance, retirement, etc.... 5. If she insists on quitting teaching then tell her what you will have to give up with 'only' $150K salary. Details on that would have to be looked at by them based on spending habits, debts, etc...they might not be able to afford private school, fancy cars, fancy vacations, or whatever they might spend $ on.

Only problem is all of that free time that she’d have can cause issues. @@michaelsorensen7567 He works there once a week for 6 hours, she works there 8 hours a month so (52x6) + (8x12) = 408 hours worked by them per year at $50K profit is $122/hr profit for their labor which is still nice but not $520/hr. The primary problem is the huge stress level it brings the wife to be involved in it. How do you calculate a cost there? With the guy already making $150-200K and the wife making say $50K to be a teacher then you are talking about going from $200-250K to $250-300K but the wife dealing with much more stress. Do they really need that to add 20% extra income when they already make $200K+? Also, they own that business, so maybe they are able to sell it off for a nice chunk of change and put that towards the kids school, etc... Having 20 employees can lead to a lot of personnel issues for various reasons not to mention gossip and drama which I suspect is part of the stress on the wife. I maintain strongly that they need to jettison that business and it isn't worth their time given everything I'm hearing.

She is indecisive on her career. She can either work as a teacher or go all in as the president of the store. The wife manages the store at 8 hours a month and husband does 24 hours a month. They make 50k a year(store revenue makes a million). The husband is in the treadmill operator business 4 days a week. He is making at least 150-200k a year, which is a good job. The wife's "get a real job" comment was just her stress.

No 'job' in corporate America is stable. His business is 99% stable and his income is predictable... $150k a year.. if he makes $200k then great, but $150k is very predictable for him. He could make even more if he worked 5 days a week or if it's a slow year, he could work 1 more day a week to make up for it. So his current business is 99% stable and so is his income. I've been in business right at 30 years. Corporate America is about 50% stable if that, depending on your company and boss.

Hubby makes 200k, kids enrolled in the swanky private school where she teaches at discounted tuition, and a side business that pretty much runs itself. And she can't handle the stress??

I relate with this so much. My portfolio is up like $400k this year so far. My wife still gives me shit that I don't have a "real job" whilst she works 12 hours a day for $3k a month. I haven't told her yet, but I make sure we enjoy the money together though.

Oh, no, not trading. She would probably have noticed if she saw me on a computer all day. I use a financial advisor whom I've been working with her for some time now and she manages the trading.

I feel this guy's pain. My ex wife that didn't work and barely did anything around the house, at one point wanted me to get a normal job so she could get a normal job. Somehow, my 6 figure job that supported the whole family was keeping her from getting a job. If you noticed, she's my ex wife.
She needs to walk away from the store. My wife works in the mental health field. She was working 11-12 hour days, salary, and got super depressed. I make $110K, net, and we live a $50K lifestyle. I told her to quit her job and take as much time as she needed to get right. She took 4 months and now works part time at a job she loves.

I was a musician for 13 years pre pandemic on around 35k per year, three days a week and 8 months a year with a house paid for. I got a job during the pandemic and thought maybe the security might be quite nice but now I’m working non stop for 2000€ a month with barely any holiday and my mortgage on my second home purchase might not pass, I supplement my income with music since 2022 and that is making 1200€ per month for one day per week, I’m getting increasingly tempted to call it a day on “security” because it’s crippling financially
I lost over $80k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. They aren't considering the tuition cut or healthcare as lost compensation either. Private school tuition is like $30-60k, and another $7k for private health insurance. It will cost them twice her salary to quit the school.
Sell the store, use the money to buy a beach house and rent it out for the five years - should cover the missing store income. Have the wife work at the school until the youngest graduates, and then retire off of his treadmill operator income at the paid off beach house.

In my experience, when people tell me "You don't have a real job." (and I have had many, MANY people tell me that) what they mean is "You need to hate your job like I do, because I don't want to be miserable alone."
She wants him to quit his job and get a "real" job. Perhaps, he should do some interviews and come home with the offers. When the highest offer is $60k a year, he can look at her and say "So do you want me to quit my 4 day a week job and work 5 days a week for a $140k reduction? Selling the store sounds reasonable as it's only $50k of income. Sure, it's only 8 hours a month of her time but she doesn't want to work that at all. Yes, she keeps teaching.
No small business owner wants to give up public school teacher insurance. A real job will cost more than $1000k per month in premiums off the take home pay.

We’ve had a ton of rentals. No stress for my wife. We did an airbnb… and even after having employees manage everything, my wife hated it. Totally stressed. I think it was just the responsibility and that it was always in the back of your mind. We just went back to rentals. Wife’s happiness is important.
Some women can really push their husbands out. This man makes 200 K from his business, his wife makes only 50k, she is pushing him to get a 9 to 5? Is he doctor? or what? What is their lifestyle? 20 years consistently this man has had this income. I wonder she is going through mid life crisis. There is more to this story. They should have several paid off homes, several rental properties and other investments with this income. It depends on their lifestyle and choices. I personally will never torment a man who brings in 200k a year income home. She is not a wise woman. Why does she want to quit her job or even quit her job? The business is doing well. I don't know what is running through her head. Is he neglecting her or abandoning her and she needs attention? Say it don't go after his business.

I dated a woman who ran an Etsy store making jewelry and really good money doing it. I can see where a lot of guys would think it’s just a hobby and even I was skeptical at first until I saw her sales history. People are so conditioned to believing an 8-5 working for someone else is the only way to survive forgetting that every small business with employees has someone at the top taking all the risk.

200k a year in st. Louis is a lot. Not much in nyc, but st. Louis, that is good money.
My advice to this man is to give her a percentage of both companies that evens out your incomes so that you do not have to pay alimony and child support. She will leave you. After she does, you can buy the other portion from her. Honestly, if the genders were reversed, more people would call the husband lazy. Protect your assets. Good luck. From my understanding, marriage is about providing the best from both genders for your children, and it should be in a healthy balance. So, if she does most of the housework, factor that in as well. But if you're both doing about the same amount of housework and childcare, prepare for her leaving. She doesn't care to be a parent.

I would love to hear the wife's perspective on this. Someone who has led a successful retail business for so long is probably not as crazy as y'all think. But she may be extremely burned out if she has been working as a teacher, running the store, and solely responsible for kids and household management. They didn't talk about who has been caring for their three children for all of these years. He didn't mention if one of the kids is having a rough time and needs more attention. Maybe she needs a little Suzanne Venker in her life. 😊
Why not get a health insurance through the store and have both of them as employees of the store. Their profits from the store would cover that.
the store doesn't have any health insurance. All the employees are part time.
@@harthart7529 that’s why you get it through the million dollar company with 20 employees. I live in Canada and worked at a comp sh that did this once the owner found out he had cancer. This way he could go to the us for treatment with specialist in his field. With most of his treatment being cover through the insurance. They had about 50 employees at the time. It can also be a bonus when hiring.

store makes 50k and is 24/7 stress. teaching at the kids private school is worth 100k until kids are out of school and is stressful about 7 hours a day with no stress weekends, holidays and summers. Yeah, the answer is obvious.
