      It’s because mindless people with a lot of cash buy them...same goes for eBay. I go to flea markets and see things that are just junk going for insane prices, I ask the seller about it and the basic reply I usually get is, “ that’s what they go for on ebay!” Thats when I say, thanks and walk away...

    • @hdrjunkie
      @hdrjunkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...also, see the prices of old used axes now, climbing higher and higher every day. You can still find cheap ones but I have even started seeing more and more hatchets going for $20.00 up to $40.00 each!

      @hebson21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hdrjunkie i was just at a flea market yesterday and saw all kinds of old beat to piss hatchets with chiped blades and broken handles for $60 to $150. Maybe they were trying to sell them as decor, no idea...

    Clicked on this thinking you found some warehouse hoard, then was like Holy Cow! that's where I buy my coal!...about 20mins from me. When I was getting started he spent like an hour explaining things, giving tips and invited me to their Tuesday night hammer in and all I was buying (that day) was one pair of tongs to get started. Second time I was there I met a full time blacksmith that's been helping me out pretty much weekly every since. AWESOME shop, AWESOME folks! That's Texas Hospitality! Thanks for featuring this!

    @freemab222 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Wow! I've been away from the anvil market for 20 years or so, and it's crazy what's happened to the prices. My most recent anvil purchases have been 55-lb HF anvils -- for use by beginners. Face so soft you can cut it with a file -- but good enough to teach beginners on.
    Meanwhile beginners should remember that you don't need an anvil - you need something to USE as an anvil. Get a few heavy (50-lb +) chunks of steel and hammer away on those. Forklift tines are highly rated, but there are lots of other choices. Tool steel will last longer and not ding up so badly, but a heavy hunk of mild steel may work for you too. And with the latter, you could always SuperQuench it -- but make sure you have LOTS of SuperQuench for a large chunk of steel.
    Professionals should invest in high-quality tools. Amateurs should start with cheap stuff and learn something about the craft before spending much money on tools.

    I ran into this shop about 17-18 yrs ago one time comming back from the Range...
    I bought a set of tongs and some coal in a pile outside that I paid for by the pound.. shoveled it into a bucket I had in the back of my truck and got started...
    I haven't been back in several years as I ended up moving to Dallas and in an apt...
    I'm back out on a small patch of land and going to set up once again... started looking at vids on anvils and so glade I clicked on this one... 😎

    That dodge of yours can handle more coal then that! Used to haul a ton on my 1/2 ton and 2 ton and 1/2 palets on my one ton cummins. Dodge is often underrated!

    5$+ a pound is not cheap, even for brand new anvils. As a matter of fact, it's a mid-range price of every other new anvil. Craigslist has a plethora of nearly pristine anvils ranging from 3-4$ a pound. Don't rush a big purchase like this and wait for a good anvil to show itself on Craigslist or Facebook. With Facebook, though, there are almost exclusively bots running fake ads or scammers wanting you to wire them money before they ship it.

      My latest anvil was 125 euro for a 110kg churchwindow anvil. Sure, it's beat up and needs some serious TLC. However it comes out at $0.58/lb and I bought it 3 weeks ago.
      Biggest difference is that I bought the anvil in a country which does not air forged in fire :D It was just an honest trader trying to make a buck and he sells about 100+ anvils a year from 30lbs to 1000+lbs

    I checked the link in the description. Lotsa stuff in there. Definately worth a good look. Only issue I have is the descriptions on the products aren't very in depth, bare minimum. For example the anvils only have the dimensions. No info on the brand, wither or not it is cast steel or drop forged steel, or the hardness, or the size of the hardy and pritchel hole etc. Makes me very wary on ordering from them.

    For Craigslist it depends on what you're looking at. I'd rather have a somewhat beat up old Made in USA vice than a new Made in China one of the pricing is around the same. If I wanted an anvil the same would apply.

    The price for their anvils would be a good price if they are forged.. If they're cast, they're not worth having. There's a lot more to anvil construction than you think. Nothing beats an old Peter Wright made in the 1800's, if it's in good shape.

    The Texas Farrier Supply anvils are undoubtedly the best bang for the buck you can get in an anvil. They are cast in a foundry in Texas, are 52-54 Rockwell hardness and have an excellent rebound. (I have a 150 lb "Blacksmith". Among others -- got an anvil problem...) I got mine from Nature Farms Farrier Supply in Norman OK. They're sold elsewhere, but higher priced and more expensive shipping. Clyde

    Interesting...
    Is coke hard to come by in the USA...?
    I mean are you coking the coal yourselves...?
    You can get forging coke here in the UK but its not as easy as it used to be...we used to have a lot of coking plants at one time here in the UK as part of heavy engineering processes...
    That shop you went to looked pretty decent with all the accessories you could need...
    I'm going to make a forge out of some sheet metal and angle when I get time...
    Front & back bosh....
    I'll possibly make the tuyer out of iron...
    Old vacuum cleaners work OK as blowers with a bit of jigging about...
    You can make a small forge out of a truck wheel....i think in some African countries they do that....
    For what those tongs cost it's pointless Making your own...and you can adapt them for special applications...
    35 dollars...thats about £20...
    Its a no brainer...

    I would certanly not call $5 / lb "dirt cheap", but its reasonably priced by todays standards.

      There is nothing reasonable about that pricing.

      I don't pay over 3.50 a pound. 4 and up is average and too much for iron ANYTHING. The anvil shape is less than special and can be made. Easier to find on line though. It's STARTING to come back down to reasonable across the board as the market is being flooded with new makers with actually reasonable prices! But CL is bullshit for most everything. People think if it has dust on it then it must be solid platinum underneath!🙄

      @@superdave54811 Totally agree. I went on their site and the prices are not good at all. They are one of the reasons prices are so high.

    Looks like a great store mate, pity it is in the US. Here is OZ we have limited stores and prices are nuts.

    A 70 pound anvil isn't worth the time or money unless you're working tiny stuff. I wouldn't work on anything less than 150 pounds minimum. When it comes to anvils, the larger the better. Material moves much faster with the same effort on my 300 pounder than my 150 pounder. Also, I wouldn't give a plug nickel for a London pattern anvil any longer. German style double horned is the way to go. London pattern anvils are narrow at the waste where you need mass the most whereas German style anvils are thick with lots of mass under the striking surface. Once I tried working on a German style, I never looked back. My London pattern anvils just sit unused.

    Have you considered making charcoal, instead of buying coal? It might make an interesting addition to the museum. Not as smelly, and no clinker.

    Cool place. I'd love to wander in it. I know what you mean about the weight in the pickup. Mi e rides like an '87 Chevy K-10 shortie. Cause that's what it is ha-ha. But I throw 400 or 500 pounds in there and she rides so nice.
