  • A short compilation of the ride to the top! A more comprehensive video is on the way, but I couldn't resist showing my first drop/ran out of talent moment on the Tuareg! 😅

    The first thing I thought to myself at the end of vid was, “this needs to be a lot longer”, then I read the description and went “okay whew”. Otherwise I would be telling you we want more lol That was some technical terrain to be riding without any crash protection. Amazing stuff tho, I didn’t know the Sierra’s had so many legal public trails like that at elevation. I love the area you live in. I’ve vacationed in south and north Lake Tahoe twice, absolutely beautiful part of the country. Love the content on this bike man, and you’re doing a great job piloting a 450lb bike on trails that would challenge most lighter dual sports. The fact that it can tractor along at those speeds comfortably, in that type of terrain, speaks volumes.

      Apologies for the (super) late reply - this track is off of Gold Lake Highway in the "Lost Sierra." The newly released "NorCal BDR" route goes right past it!

    Hi,
    I recommend some Crashbars .
    I bought mine from Hepco & Becker in Germany. They fit really good and are cheaper than the original from Aprilia. After 300 km i Had Groundcontact......
    I own a Red one, my Brother the blue.
    Great Bike, enyoy your Videos a Lot.
    Greatings from Germany!!!

      Yea I have some on the way. Admittedly I'm not super keen on the Hepco & Becker bars but I know lots of other folks are!
      I ordered the lower and upper crash bars system from Heed - if this drop was any indication, the engine case and lower part of the fairing are both quite vulnerable, and I'm afraid most crash bars only cover the upper fairing.
      I'll do a review once those parts arrive. Glad you and your brother are enjoying this magnificent bike!

      @@TwoWheeledBooBear Picking up my 660 on Tuesday. Any recommendations of hand guards? Something that will really protect the levers. A decent bash plate is also on my list. The rocks on the Cascade trails can be harsh. :)

      @@MichaelShaw206 I'm a big fan of all things handguard related from BarkBusters - I'm currently using some Amazon knockoffs until some confirmed solutions are on the market. BarkBusters will hopefully soon have their system available for the Tuareg and then I'll be tossing my money at them.
      As far as a bash plate goes, SW-Motech is the first I've seen to offer a big name solution. I'm gonna rock the stock until A.) more options are available or B.) until it's mangled beyond repair and a replacement becomes a necessity haha

      "Crashbars" is an unfortunate name. They should be called "dropbars" because that's all they're really good for. They are designed with softer steel so that they will bend or break on purpose so that your bike's FRAME that they are attached to does not get bent. They protect your fairing and plastics in small drops only. In any real hard crash, they will bend or break (as designed) and you will need to fix them, out on a bad road somewhere, middle of nowhere, with few tools, before you can continue on. AMHIK. I gave up on crashbars a long time ago. Silly idea really, let that pretty bike get scratched up I say, it'll make you feel like you got your money's worth outta that bike!

      @@rideoregonfirst Er, no. I’ve gone down HARD on 2 occasions, both with SW motech bars. The first time they saved my 3 month trip, the second time they saved major damage to my new T7.

  • @HippoDrones
    @HippoDrones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Bad luck dropping it mate. It happens though, and the type of bike it is should sustain several drops with no harm! :-)
    You have a stunning playground by the way! :-)
    Am glad I am not the only one who finds myself breathing a little heavily when trail riding! :D
    I think water crossings will be the Aprilia strength with where the airbox snorkel is! :-)

    • @TwoWheeledBooBear
      @TwoWheeledBooBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      haha yea, funny that - the heavy breathing didn't start until after we hiked a 1/4 of a mile up the damn mountain wearing full gear. After all that and then the walk back, I was gassed. Riding is way easier than walking lol
      Unfortunately some harm was indeed done in this drop. I found very quickly that this bike should not be taken offroad without crash protection. As gently as it went down, the radiator still got pushed back about a cm - so crash protection is pretty much a necessity if the intent is to take the bike anywhere beyond gravel roads.

      @@TwoWheeledBooBear ahh that is a pain. Unfortunately water cooled bikes all suffer this, even enduro bikes.. so some kind of protection is a must

    I want to buy an adventure bike to do some off the beaten path moto-camping etc. I like that this bike is so capable right from the factory. I'm getting into it after over a decade of not riding was originally looking at a CB500X then realizing I probably need something more like a yamaha tenere 700 to get where I want to go... Now I want the Aprilia Tuareg 660.
    Definitely putting some good crash bars on it.
    It will be dropped. 🙂

    Hi
    do you see any disadvantages of this motorcycle that you can eliminate on your own without investing a lot of money?

    • @TwoWheeledBooBear
      @TwoWheeledBooBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I suppose "a lot of money" is relative, right? I think the only thing it really "needs" if you're going to be taking it on rough tracks is some decent crash protection.
      Additional wind protection may also be needed depending on how tall you are - for me it was a necessity but I'm 6'2" (186cm) tall.
      Out of the box this bike has been damn near perfect as far as I'm concerned.

    I strongly considering changing from street bike to this bike as my first adventure bike, I think dropping it is unavoidable. I've ridden dirt bikes before but not middleweight adventure bikes. Is there any good crash protection aftermarket parts for this bike yet? I

    • @TwoWheeledBooBear
      @TwoWheeledBooBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quite a few options already, yes. Heed, Hepco & Becker, and SW Motech all make crash protection for it and GIVI/Kappa are right behind them.

      @@uti_s1471 thanks!
      Surprisingly the aftermarket options aren't all that pricey. The Heed bars are 190 euro (195 USD) and if you add in the lower crash bars to protect the engine case, the total hover right at about $320 shipped.
      Hepco and Becker's upper crash bars are about 330-350 shipped, and unsure about the cost of SW-Motech. Depending on what GIVI releases I may quickly find myself reselling the Heed kit, just because I've really liked the other products I've gotten from GIVI in the past

      @@TwoWheeledBooBear Nice, its not that bad I suppose, it's probably worth it! Both saving the plastic and making it easier to pickup would be a big advantage. I don't know if second hand value is something to consider for later on these bikes, as you said I don't wanna drop a new bike but it's unavoidable and it's a learning process that requires some tough love I presume.

      Cheers Marcio.
      I'm personally not a big fan of the MotoZ lineup just because I like retaining the true dual purpose ability of my bike. Their tires are unquestionably the best money can buy for the dirt, but their road manners have always left me disappointed.
      I currently have a 2nd gen KLR with a 685 big bore, a Royal Enfield Himalayan, and the Tuareg. I had and sold a KTM 990.
      Having ridden the 900 Rally Pro, the Tuareg will be a massive upgrade for this sort of riding. I honestly hated the Tiger though I think on a long pavement pound of 800KM, it would probably be more comfortable. That's not to say that the Tuareg is uncomfortable, but the Tiger is clearly designed more for the road than not whereas the Tuareg was designed to handle some truly gnarly terrain while also being extremely playful on road.
      4,800 problem free miles currently and love it more and more every day.
      And to be clear, the OE tires aren't bad - they just don't like slick stuff which is no surprise as they're an 80/20. Shinko 705s are going on next week as they're my favorite 70/30.
