I once had a pair of ear buds go through the washer AND the dryer. They still worked, no joke. My sister's husband said it's probably because they were the super cheap type. The expensive ones are more delicate.

I kinda damage both, I have a long history of headphones, earphones and earbuds and its pretty random, the cheaper ones never really lasted me longer but neither did rhe most expensive ones either.
I dip the entire earbud in isopropyl alcohol and let it sit to let the earwax soften and then I earwax removal sounds to push it out and then use a tooth brush and tooth pick to remove any residue.
For the wired Apple headphones I purposefully put them in my pocket when I clean my pants and they come out completely clean just give them a day to dry, I did this all the time till I got AirPods

I personally just chew some gum then use that. Works about as well as the putty, plus the alcohol will remove any gum residue
remind me not to borrow and use your headphones if we ever, by some extreme coincedence, meet in person one day

I personally remove the big build ups with a toothpick (be gentle) and then i use blue tac to get into the grills to fully clean it

Maybe clean the wax out of your ears with a Q-tip before jamming earbuds in. Prevent them getting covered in earwax in the first place.
