Speaking from my perspective (a Polish who learned English), the difficulty in speaking fluently is not because of having not enough skill in your mouth, tounge, sounds making... this can be trained quite easily. It's all about processing thoughts in time to voice them whenever you want. To teach your brain to think in English (or any other foreign language) and to think fast is not easy. It's always easier to write than speak. You can give yourself time to pick right vocabulary or rephrase a sentence when you write. When speaking there's no time for it.
Even if your listening skills go up so much you're able to follow a fast speaking person who uses advanced vocabulary, that's satisfying enough. However, when you can speak fast, using a lot of words, not even giving them too much thought, that's mind-blowing. Such a great feeling of accomplishment. A part of the words I use, I don't really know translation to them (to my mother tongue), but I understand the meaning and use them correctly.

I am from India and my name is Rubel. I highly recommend to all of you to subscribe this channel. I have been following this channel since lockdown and really it helped my skills even now also. These teachers are outstanding. In my salad days, I was so shy and that time I got 30marks out of 100 in English in class 10. But now English is my favourite subject and the most interesting part is that I passed under graduation in English literature and during Hons in college nobody expressed their points in English clearly but fortunately I came across this channel and it made me confident then everyone surprised because I could express my views clearly using good sentence. Therefore, I haven't any words to compliment on these teachers. They are revolutionary teachers in English language. They completely turned our fear into confident in English language.
I am very lucky to be your student dear teachers.

Loving the musical interlude to explain the difference between fluency and proficiency! And congrats to Thiago on his English level (all the more impressive given that he achieved it alone). I was pretty fluent in French as a teenager (I could have a conversation), but I definitely wasn't proficient! My accent would have been strong and my grammar off etc, but I enjoyed speaking! I was learning German at the same time and I got bogged down with proficiency - putting the verbs in the right place, getting the cases right etc - and my fluency was much lower. But I think that also illustrates the difference between those two languages - French is a bit more flexible and it's easier to go with the flow. Maybe English is somewhere in between.

This episode was great. Interesting distinction between fluency and proficiency. While I have a good proficiency, particularly in a "passive mode", I feel I have limited fluency. As you guys discussed, it's seems natural to gain/reach fluency first. So, I was wondering how to do the other way around and balance both aspects. Maybe you can expand on this in another episode. Keep up the good work guys. Cheers

Thank you for this great video! It’s very useful and inspirational! I am at the stage where I have been living my English in real life for some time already, but eventually realized that it is getting worse (because I face similar situations on a daily basis) and any new situation causes hesitation and reveals lack of proficiency. So I realized that I definitely could do more for my English. However, I am full time working adult and do not have a lot of time to dedicate to learning (especially to memorizing new words). So with all this being said, I would love to hear from you about practical ways to improve proficiency (especially to develop vocabulary) for people with different time relevant possibilities, e.g., from those who can learn one new word per week to those who can dedicate some time a day for active memorizing. Thank you a lot in advance!

Hello/Olá from Brazil! By listening this EP, now it makes sense the reason why when I am taking an English Test and the results shows me that my listening comprhension skills are between the C1 and C2 level but when it comes to speaking it lows to B2-(Upper-Intermediate Level) Maybe it's bcz I have only focused on reading and listening. I can Understand around 100% or so of what I heard or read, but I "Freeze Up", as you said, when I try to express myself on a certain situation or certain topic.

What an interesting and great topic! I have come across a couple of 'teachers' on TH-cam, they are able to speak English pretty well(fluent), but they make a lot of mistakes in their teaching(aka teaching the wrong things). I am originally from Hong Kong and have been living in the UK and the US for a long time, my English is around C2 level, hence I can tell those teachers don't have the proficiency. However, many people when they are at B2 level or below, would not know the fact that they are being misled.

My problem isn't fluency, my problem is that I find it really hard to stop overanalyzing what I'm saying when I'm speaking, and that causes me to eventually stutter and stop and get frustrated. I was once so good at English and my friends and classmates admired my confidence and spontaneity in class. Every time my the teacher dedicated a class to improvisation, I'd be the first one to raise my hand to stand by the whiteboard and start talking carelessly and casually. Unfortunately now I've lost that confidence and developed this sheer and complete perfectionism with English. Now I'd rather never talk again than make a mistake talking or commenting on a TH-cam video like this, but back in the day I'd type a whole text on social media.

I would say too that the hood analogy was great, a fluent analogy.

It's a matte of practice. You got used to our accent, so your listening skill is doing fine. Now it's time to deliberately work on your speaking skills. You can do it!

You have to activate your knowledge with a little practice. It's in there but you need to repeatedly try to retrieve those words. The act of trying and failing over and over is natural. But it tells your brain to work towards this goal It's important. Over time the vocabulary will come easier and easier. Until it is like second nature.
