      @@gibsonguitar I am very lucky to have a Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue , Custom 1960 Les Paul Standard Reissue and a Custom 1960 Les Paul Special Double Cut Reissue. They all have the slimmer neck and I love the variety of sound!

    Eric Johnson has the same opinion on things nitrocellulose on his signature Stratocaster. Eric Johnson was the first person I heard promoting this idea. 10-20 years ago ? I don’t remember every sentence ever spoken…. What I do know is if you are in a high production industry, any little savings is a lot overall. God Bless Gibson and all us players to create something amazing 🎉

    Thanks for this video. While I would never personally buy satin finish and I think that VOS is just a way to save costs and charge more I do appreciate the quality of the full gloss treatment. My Gibson acoustics are all older and have opened up over time as the lacquer outgassed. I like hearing the thoughts of the people who do the work but confess since execs started showing up in these videos I like them less. Mr Koehler comes across as insincere whereas the lacquer technician has real credibility

      Try getting with the custom shop or their new store in Nashville. You will most likely have to order the J-185

      @@bryantcochran5065 Thanks. I tried to order one through Sweetwater and Wildwood. Didn't want anything too fancy,just a Florentine cutaway, like the Starburst guitar. I'll try that route.

    Answer is simple, it hardens as it ages. Something you can get with todays technology using a 2 part urethane, its hard in a week instead of a decade. The harder it is the more it rings, more resonant, 2 part clear with hardener works great. nitro lacquer is antique tech, but for some reason people cant get with the times and understand that.

      I agree. You're able to get the same film thickness with fewer coats, and it'll be hard as a rock within a few days. I've sprayed 1 guitar with nitro and 5 guitars with poly as a luthier and personally made my choice after the first one.

    If nitro is so great, why not make acoustic guitars with NO FINISH... Or maybe one really thin coat... Anyone know?

      It seals the wood and protects it from moisture. If there were no finish, moisture would go in and out of the wood and eventually create cracks in the wood.

    There are only 2 finishes for guitars, nitrocellulose and French polish. Anything other than those and you've lost a lot of the tone that was built into the instrument. I've been a luthier for 50 years by the way.

    • @bryantcochran5065
      @bryantcochran5065 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @zakwyldesilver yeah, the infernalnet says a lot that just isn't true. Poly finishes, while nearly bulletproof, are thick and while that might be ok for an electric, it's just not good for acoustics to wear a thick coating of finish. I own one electric that has a poly finish every other guitar I own has nitrocellulos, except one OM that I French polished.

      I agree.
      I’m not going to say one sounds better than the other, because “better” is completely subjective, but I will say they definitely sound different.

    • @green461
      @green461 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe in 1960, but its 2024 now. A 2 part (hardener) automotive urethane clear dries rock hard in a week and you dont have to wait 2 decades for them to be resonant and ring like a bell. Ive been involved in paint and coatings for 30 years but a dime store luthier for 3 years and the harder coating the better it rings.. same stuff i clear cars with. It works well.

      Very well put also how does it feel that Epiphone is ruling the Roost once again like they did in the good o'l days it was over for Gibson after two things getting caught in lies during their miserably failed lawsuits and when JC Curliegh Restored Epiphone back to where they should have always been in 2020 epiphone was never meant to be a budget brand in the first place and they weren't until Norlin ruined them when they took over Gibson that all ends with JC Curliegh in 2019/2020
