Yes! I was thinking the exact same thing! It is interesting. (Why does beards matter so much today? At my workspace, most male people in an "power" position has a beard. Why? Ps. Not bad at all. I love Vsauce. Pss. I have a beard too! :)
I C Clouds, take this as a lesson about audio... Just as said on Cinefix (not affiliated) Audio can make or break you... A bad visual can be presented with great audio and still have audiences lined up to get in... A great movie can have bad audio, and turn into instant flops. So while the visual presentation is important to get into your mind through the front door of your eyes and your conscious, audio is the part that creeps in subconsciously through the back (or side) doors of your ears... Most of the time, especially with good audio work, you never even notice. :o)
I've known of Visual Politikfor a long time because I watched Simon's vlog, and he's good friends with the creator of the channel and met with him often, but since Simon stopped creating his vlog, I had no idea he was making english videos there now as well!
Damn, the Fairmont Montreux Palace at the eastern end of Lake Geneva. I will never forget the gorgeous views you get right before sunrise on a chilly March.
OK so oftentimes as I click these videos, I try to guess the answer for myself. This was my hypothesis: "ambu" comes from "ambi" meaning both, like ambidextrous means you're nimble with both hands, or "ambivalent" means can go both ways. Then the other part is "lance" so I imagined that in the past the emergency doctors had lances to slay anybody in their way so they could get to the injured person. Or not really slay but at least so people would let them by to get to the injured, and then (this is where the "ambi" comes in) and then use the lances to go back the other way to get the injured person to the hospital. I did have a hunch that my hypothesis was a bit off but oh well :D
Robert Baker My favorite "ghost" etymology is of Avenue. A Venue is a specific location, often enclosed or conscribed. But the prefix "A-" meaning Not, gives us Avenue, meaning not enclosed or conscribed. Thus, a wide, long street. I guess that today we could call this Alternative etymology. (grin) TBH it's totally fake.
In fact, though, Kwizii was right. Latin "ambo" means "both (of two)" - "ambivalent" is from ambo+valere ("both being valid"), "ambiguous" is ultimately derived from Latin "ambigere", consisting of ambo+agere ("doing/driving/making both"). The latter is where that meaning of uncertainty comes in, and it has been used in that sense figuratively for a while.
You forgot the bonus fact: Ambulance is written backwards on the front so it will appear forwards in your rear view mirror. Some businesses do the same on their vehicles for (I presume) the same reason. Mirror writing in all its form and for all its reasons would make a great subject for a TIFO video.
Good video. Although I can see a very limited need for previews for other video channels. What about just a link to the other channel in the disccription.
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Do a video on "Why can't I pet a guide/service/assistance dog?" You have an opportunity to make a difference for a group of people who are put in danger daily by the public because they don't understand how dangerous it is for us.
There seems to be a big difference between the volume settings for "Today I Found Out" vid at the beginning and the VisualPolitic vid at the end with the VisualPolitic vid being way lower and therefor hard to hear.
Thank you Simon for pronouncing French words as close as possible to my native tongue. Although I speak Canadian French, it is all very similar. Merci mon ami pour les bonnes et intéressants subjects que toi et l'équipe produisent. Thanks and keep it up! 😉😁☮️❤️
My brother managed to make someone believe that they were called Ambulances because initially they had amber lamps to make them look apart from ordinary wagons. The name "amber lamps" slowley changed though time to Ambulance
"As far as I'm concerned, it's a damned shame that a field as potentially dynamic and vital as journalism should be overrun with dullards, bums, and hacks, hag-ridden with myopia, apathy, and complacence, and generally stuck in a bog of stagnant mediocrity." -Hunter S. Thompson
So here's what I did.... As it's waay past my bedtime and I'm knackered, i clicked the link, hit subscribe so i can take a look later! I'm sure I'll enjoy it because you make bloody good content!
Is it possible that it also might means "that goes around"? In italian the word "ambulante" is reffered to a street vendor, usually someone who moves from place to place at intervals. The two words are pretty similar.
I find myself distracted by the music in the background. Do you always use background music and i've never noticed or is this music more upbeat than normal?
@simonwhistler, Why do proper nouns change from language to language? For example, why do we anglophones call them German when they call themselves Deutsch?
The ambulance volante was used to evacuate wounded rather than the more general term of "injured" soldiers. I am sure there were many soldiers that suffered horrendous mental injururies due to witnessing the terrible battlefied scenes. Of course, these particular soldiers would not have been rescued from the battlefield by any of these vehicles. So this is a case where the word "wounded" really is more appropriate than the more wide ranging term "injured".

Every video, Simon looks progressively more like Michael from Vsauce.
Not exactly a bad thing.
Yes! I was thinking the exact same thing! It is interesting. (Why does beards matter so much today? At my workspace, most male people in an "power" position has a beard. Why?
Ps. Not bad at all. I love Vsauce.
Pss. I have a beard too! :)
even more in the close up during the preview
Thankfully the similarity is only superficial. Michael is the most obnoxiously annoying person I've ever seen in my internet life
Bluepolis They're doppelgängers
Still waiting for a video explaining why simon whistler is called simon whistler
Mr.Whistler touched a certain woman the right way and made her blush. 9 months later, Simon was born. :P
It's because of his mother.
Whistler's mother.
03jkeeley
Brilliant!
@Atticus Finch I hear his father was Gregory Hen-Pecked...
He's eventually just going to explain every word in the dictionary, and I'll be there to watch each video.
Don't tempt us. ;-)
do "antidisestablishmentarianism"
They say there is a correlation between a horse's backside and the space shuttle.. can you do a video on this one ? :)
because of that song, "Whoa-oh, Black Betty, Ambulance!"
schadenfreudebuddha I thought it was Black betty, bramble jam.
schadenfreudebuddha it's "bam-a-lam"...
Woah, Black Betty ... Amber Lamps
Woah, Black Betty... Amber Lamps
Black Betty learned to drive ... Amber Lamps
schadenfreudebuddha "Call tha Amblamp!!
the audio is all over the place
Yeah Simon :( I have on purpose not commented on that on the visualpolitik videos assuming you knew, but this sh*** gotta go :P
Hahaha :) Well said

Simon Wistler is like VSauce's Michael with a British accent
Question: Why does shaking your head horizontally mean no, and vertically, yes?
That is interesting! Even nomadic tribes in the heart of China do it! Must be in our make up
Short and sweet, Simon. You covered the points and no filler. Brillaint.

Hi TIFO,
Just wanted to say I appreciate the content you put out and you're doing fantastic work.
:)

Kwizii Little off.
Kwizii
You ended up lost but that was quite a journey. Post again, that was entertaining.
Robert Baker Ooh thanks, you taught me something new!
or should I say... today I found out something new!! :)

It comes from the Ram Jam classic "Black Betty".
"Woah-oh, Black Betty,
Am-ba-lance,
Get up, Black Betty,
Am-ba-lance..."
really really nice backgrounds, no strange flickering, made me calm while watching, keep it up ☺
Thumbs up the comment if you like the setup, and let them know your opinion
Love that old QANTAS photo!
The ambulance one not your best work but I'm definitely subscribing to your new one. You make great stuff man, keep it up!
Glad to help, i'm going to check out that other channel. Good luck Simon!!
This is such a lively and engaging channel.
New channel looks neat!
Love the new channel. This finance nerd will be tuning in.
Good video. Although I can see a very limited need for previews for other video channels. What about just a link to the other channel in the disccription.
ty for showing the picture of the R.A.F.D.S, I live in Queensland and am amazed other countries dont have similar services.
love you simon! looking forward to the new channel! congats!
"Ambulance": you walk (ambulate) into a lance, and need help. QED.
I like learning. New channel subbed!
Simon this new channel is awesome! plus your beard is looking glorious!
"Sumbody call the ambulamb!" looool
Can you do a video on what causes canker sores (AKA mouth ulcers)
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Do a video on "Why can't I pet a guide/service/assistance dog?" You have an opportunity to make a difference for a group of people who are put in danger daily by the public because they don't understand how dangerous it is for us.
I love the reference about the ambulance chaser 😹 sure I'll sub to your new channel 👍👍
"Ambulatory" is pretty close to "Ambulance"
The German word makes even more sense and is straight forward. "Krankenwagen" translates to "sick wagon"
Mr Whistler going up in the world.
Whoa, black betty
Amber Lamps
love your vids learned so much
There seems to be a big difference between the volume settings for "Today I Found Out" vid at the beginning and the VisualPolitic vid at the end with the VisualPolitic vid being way lower and therefor hard to hear.
Looking forward to the same quality on the new channel Simon, congrats mate.

0:30 yay, Brisbane!!!!
awesome job!
and thank you in kind for the outstanding content.

Nice. Like the new channel idea.
Thompson
Good luck with the new channel
I started to wonder why ambulances were called that, considering the meaning of the word ambulatory. This video explains a lot.
I work for the ambulance service 😋 thanks for the information this will be great to share during our down times between calls
- Why Las Vegas became the center of gambling and entertainment in the USA?
- Discovery of sex toys or perhaps contraception tools
So here's what I did.... As it's waay past my bedtime and I'm knackered, i clicked the link, hit subscribe so i can take a look later! I'm sure I'll enjoy it because you make bloody good content!
So Braun Strowman can flip them when he's _not done with you_.
Or like they say in my "hood", Amber-lanse. As in, "Sumbadee, call da Amberlanse"! Then, I'd ask, "What's the number for 911?!"
Is it possible that it also might means "that goes around"?
In italian the word "ambulante" is reffered to a street vendor, usually someone who moves from place to place at intervals.
The two words are pretty similar.
You make an excellent host. Attractive and well spoken.
how do you keep your head so smooth
New channel looks cool!
Had an accident? Ambulance
Hotel? Trivago.
Omg, please do the history of bouncy balls
That opening for the beginning of the preview is the same as whatculturewrestling's ups & downs videos.
Certainly an interesting new(?) video channel, all it needs is the audio to be corrected (turn the host voice up, and the music down).
about the other channel, this preview was nice, but the sound seemed muted while the music was drowning out the speech.
interesting content though
hey simon, take note of the audio issues , especially on your new channel !
You know I'll follow you anywhere Simon!!
I find myself distracted by the music in the background. Do you always use background music and i've never noticed or is this music more upbeat than normal?
Why do fortune tellers use crystal balls?
Another channel? How do you do it?
Spoiler alert.
They were invented by a nurse called Amber Lamps.
Who also invented amber coloured lamps.
how are you still not verified?
CALL THE AMBALAMB!
I have to watch the Swiss stuff cuz this is so on point of what I have to do for a french fair...
Switzerland part: Sound level fail
thanks for the video, and nice green screen work , can tell its a green screen because of your beard XD XD XD
Not a fan of the backing music.
Warning: His new work involves him waving his hands too close to the camera
One video, three shirts. Continuity Simon?
His beard has a mind of its own
In Nevada they call it Amblarance
Of course I'll check out the other channel. Simon is great!
wow youve grown, been here since 70 thousand
I am very excited to learn of your new politically-focused youtube channel. And much love to Simon.
The sound level dropped when you switched to the second video.
The audio is much quieter on the second video. I had to turn my volume up significantly after watching TIFO
you ever notice that they NEVER say 'Click that dislike button' ....so i did
ive never asked this question before, but why not. haha
Why are amber lamps called amber lamps?
You looked like you were on Speed in the Switzerland portion.
Also, the red background is so loud it hurts.
@simonwhistler,
Why do proper nouns change from language to language? For example, why do we anglophones call them German when they call themselves Deutsch?
Surprisingly, no reference was made to napoleon Bonaparte at all! None!
In Italy, it simply means "that-goes-around".
I don't even know why I'm whatching this...
Also, the first twenty seconds were enough: it's derived from latin and its original name could be translated with "something that goes around".
No they are callled KRANKENWAGEN !
Because they felt like calling them Ambulances.
I think the new channel is cool
Wow i thought Ambulance Chasers were of more recent origin.
Today I Found Out that Simon's gonna try to host more channels than Atheism-Is-Unstoppable did.
The origin of the IBM PC!
What happens to poison when it's expired, more potent or less?
RIP Ambulances, #FireBraun.
