    Heads up, Tom! They no longer provide Verizon service. They did not notify us it happened, we just discovered it on our own when we were suffering through a period of spotty coverage where a Verizon connection would have given us service. We only found out today when we confronted them about it. They finally acknowledged it. You will want to pull down this video or correct the information in order to maintain your reputation.

      I'm currently using a $50/month Verizon plan with unlimited data in an OpenWRT router tethered to an iPhone 12, works great and I can use the phone at the same time while it's providing data to the router. ;)

  • @coastrnut
    @coastrnut ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Thank you for sharing this video! Very good information!
    I just wanted to share something that I found out - with HomeFi - and their sister company TravlFi.
    I was looking into options after hearing about the Nomad Internet fiasco - (was actually tempted to go with them - until watching your updated review - and others - glad I didn't).
    I did see HomeFi -- and the "free" router. However - upon checking their FAQ's -- yes, the router is free - But -- it is only free if you keep up the month to month payments for their service. If you decide to drop their service then you must return their router - or you will be charged an equipment fee.
    So essentially in order to keep the "free" router - you must keep up with the month to month service. If you would decide to skip months when you are not traveling, you have to cancel the service, return the router, and then when you want to pick up the service again, you have to re-order a new router - wait for them to ship it again, then start your Month to Month all over again.
    To me - this would be a pain - unless you are keeping the service all year around.
    To me - the better option is with their sister company - TravlFi ( travlfi.com/ ). With TravlFi - you purchase the router up front - then the router is yours to keep. Just like HomeFi - the router works with all 3 of the major carriers - AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon - with no sim card required. The router is the exact same router that you featured on your video with HomeFi - but, you own it - instead of renting it.
    The best part - is that after purchasing the router - and choosing your data plan (the data plan I choose is 50 gig of data a month for $69 a month), you have the option of a true month to month - OR month to month recurring. With month to month - you only pay for the months you use - on a month to month basis - and - you can pause (ie - not pay for) the months you don't need the service. Say if you want the service for June, then skip July - and pick the service back up again in August - you just Pay for June, don't pay for July, then Pay again in August. You will NOT need to return the router - since you purchased it up front - and you simply just re-activate it again when you are ready to start using it again.
    And - if you run low on data, you can 'upgrade' to the next plan - say if you have the 50 gig plan and decide mid month that you really need the 100 gig plan, you can call and upgrade to the next plan, and will only be charged the pro-rated charge for that partial month - (not the whole month), then the next month you will be charged for the higher speed plan in full.
    You can also downgrade as well - (but not sure if when you downgrade you would receive a refund mid month - probably not) but, then for the next month, you would be charged the appropriate amount for the downgraded less gig data plan.
    I have tried out TravlFi and so far, (with only 2 days of 8 hours of service) I had a solid connection - and no dropped or loss of signal. I plan on using this for travel when I am working, so I can work remote from the RV while camping.
    So - for me- with the idea of being truly able to only pay for the months I want to use the service (your month starts when you order and use the service - I started May 6th- so my service will end on June 6th unless I pay for another month by June 6th) and can drop the service for the months I won't be needing the service - without sending equipment back, and then waiting for shipping again when I want to pick the service back up.
    So - just putting this out there - as another option for people to look into as well.
    Both HomeFi and TravlFi are owned by the same company - and both are very easy to contact as well.
    Hope this might help others as well!
    Gary Moyer

      TravFi are MORE expensive for the data plans though. $199 for 800GB vs $135. Same with the lower tier levels too.

    Hello sir.
    Suggestion for ya.
    You can connect external antennas in replacement to the 2 rear paddle antennas.
    Run a couple of cables outside and connect to homefi router and connect to external antennas in order to get better reception, extended reception, more stable connection, and usually better speeds.
    Just a suggestion

      @@TMegelhoff It looks to me, the quick view of the router rear end, and Tom’s description, that this should be do-able.
      And
      Far cheaper than buying a roof wart full of antennas ;)
      But, if you got it use it.
      Should be able to assemble a roof antenna and cables on the cheap. Or blow some money for real 4G/5G distances.

    • @sgtevmckay
      @sgtevmckay ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@R8derWill there are quick kits available, and adapters as needed.
      Remove the 2 large flap antennas, screw in a cable with proper connection, outside, and apply the antenna as required.
      There are solutions that are slim and affordable, and work their way up in price to performance.
      I would not recommend this item, but just a an example.
      This would most likely need adapters to screw into the router back side.
      MIMO and 4G lte/5G is also widely available ;)

Although I have only had it for a day, it is already outperforming the pepwave / husky parsec solution at my home base. I did not have large upfront or installation costs. If this has a MediaTek chipset you might want to check your WIFI connection in the software of the box. If it uses Open source openwrt and there is a bad driver for the chipsets where the WIFI distance is hampered by this driver -10db loss of power output and its not allowing proper connection to the WIFI at the speeds its supposed to be. Like WIFI connects at 600mbs instead of 866mbs WIFI speed connection. So as a tech of 25+ plus years this is the info i have found with some of these routers coming out using MediaTek processors. So beware what is coming from these companies.

      I've been using HomeFi for the past 2 months and am still in the testing phase however so far it has performed decently. You don't have to call them to switch providers as it will determine signal strength when plugged in and use the best of the 3. Like Tom said all you have to do is unplug the unit for a few seconds then plug it back in and it will determine the best signal at that time.

  • @ronmcnab98
    @ronmcnab98 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This will not work in locations where there is no cell service. Starlink works ALL THE TIME. Cell service is costly and not guaranteed to give you a connection. Even when you have a cell connection, you need to read the terms of "unlimited access" terms, and your bandwidth will be limited. Still, you may always be able to connect (depending on cell availability). The cell providers watch your bandwidth usage and will pull back the allowed download and upload speeds. Cellular is not a great option if some emergency cell towers become overloaded and malfunctioning. Starlink would not be affected by any national or local emergency. The value of Starlink and the ability to connect in all cases outweigh the cost and compare it to any cellular service. This is not a great solution for RV's

For some reason, this is sniffing a lot like a Nomad restart, however I found other providers offering the same devices at a higher cost per month. My big question would be future support what if/when 4G/4GLTE finally goes the way of the Dodo bird, will they provide a new modem and move customers over to the current tech, or oh sorry it was an awesome time now go and start looking again. I would love to see RV Internet Resource Center validate this. Also, is anyone else concerned that the devices are only made in China? I did find the user manual and this device can be setup as a bridge, and not do routing you could then do VPN tunnel over it to encrypt your data. My concern is how much money did the Chinese gov. put into this vSIM tech and how much of my data will be on the dark web for them to sell?

      Yep. The 4GLTE lifespan/expiration was my question. Telecom providers are not known for loyalty so it takes us asking in droves in a short time to push demand via terms in our favor. I am in a RV Campground now and minimize use of the no security wifi; I even had what seemed like somone moving my mouse cursor.... no bueno, but then wifi is easily hacked even with your "secure" modem. I need a solution of sorts so the HomeFi and a booster may do the trick , but for how long until the providers go 100% 5G or higher.

    T-mobile is crap. Couldn't get more than 1-1/2 bars less than 2 miles from their own 5G tower.

    Both companies reviews are not good at all. Be aware of what you are promoting.

    HomeFi sucks! We tried it solely on the recommendation of this video. Terrible customer service. Did not get service and can’t get a refund. This video should be taken down or updated somehow.
