Point A to Point B | Sound design walkthrough with Morphagene, Mutable Instruments Beads

  • I'm in the process of making a record with my friend Luke Elliot (lelliott.bandcamp.com). We live on different continents and in timezones far apart. For the most part I've been doing sound design and sending him big batches of files to play around with and compose. Rinse and repeat.
    This video is about one particular sound I designed that felt pretty magical as I was doing it. I hope you enjoy watching how the sounds get transformed through the process.
    I started with my Rhodes piano played direct into a DIY phaser I built, then into the Strymon Iridium to get amp sounds. I own a good amp but sometimes I need to be quiet in my tiny house. I noodled and edited a particular phrase I found interesting down and saved it to the micro SD card for MakeNoise/soundhack Morphagene.
    I ran that sample from Morphagene into Mutable Instruments Beads.
    During that session I didn't do any patching to speak of just explored with the various controls and essentially began to hear the seeds of melodies and even a composition. I hope you find it as delightful as I did.
    As always, if you like what i'm doing here, please follow me on YT, Insta and mostly Bandcamp where I release all music digitally and occasionally on analog media too!

    Bought beads since I have Morphagene, and I can confirm. Beads is perfect pair for Morphagene. I literally spend an hour just with those two. Nothing in between, and modulating them. It was an awe moment and forgot the time. Very very satisfied.

    Love the final result, super musical. And thank you for showing us the raw recording, you have no idea how many times I wished to hear that before the mangled and processed version!

      Awesome, I'm glad you found it useful! I've for sure wanted to bug some of my favorite TH-camrs to understand how they got some of their sounds as well!

    So I have been working very similar to you - my problem is i just record everything then have to spend hours listening through and cutting up the bits i like. You way is a lot more focused but sometimes you find the happy accidents.

      Ah yeah. I've always shied away from hitting record for hours on end because the thought of going back to listen seems too daunting. As a creative person/artist I'm always trying to lower the barriers to entry for things like this. So my preference is to one of the following.
      - Judiciously press record whenever something interesting is going on.
      - If I'm letting it roll for a while, never let it go beyond a few minutes without something interesting happening. If for example 5 minutes go by and nothing got me excited I'll just delete it straight away
      - Also if I'm rolling and something really cool happens, as soon as I have a hand free I'll drop a marker in the project. In my DAW I just press "m" so it's really easy and even reflexive by now
      In general, I bias towards editing when things are fresh and not to get too sad if I lose something. New ideas and sounds are always gonna come!

      @@SycamoreWillow yeah it definitely seems the best way to go but I'm firmly in the other camp lol. Just record everything and worry about it later 🥲

    This is so ridiculously beautiful and simple. I've been chasing this sound for years. Tape loops & delays and reverbs and resonances etc have come close but this absolutely nails it. I've already got a Clouds unit on the way and the Morphagene is definitely top of the list.
    Also, the way you stop and explaining what's happening/what each function and manipulation does is perfect. Awesome work.

      Oh wow, you just made my day! It's so nice to hear when others enjoy things I do. I don't make any significant money from my music and my vids and honestly that's not the goal. I just love doing it and connecting with others. Thanks so much for taking the time to say something, it's very satisfying for me to know that these sounds probably made you feel how I did!

    Awesome video as always my friend, really like this format, the pacing is perfect! Ive been thinking about whether to start a modular rack focussing solely on sound design, morphagene would be my first choice for sure, so cool! Anyways hope your good, take care and look forward to your next release!

      Hey there, first of all thank you for stopping by to watch a video and leave such a supportive comment! I appreciate it. I will be posting more soon. Part of the reason there's been a lull is I've had a really challenging couple of years with my day job. In addition, with my free time I've been doing more live, in person stuff like performing, workshops and helping put on events. That said, I'm so glad you want to see more and I have some new stuff planned that I need to find the time to make. My ideal timeline is to have a short series of new videos coming in Jan.
      Take care!

    Great video. We share the same type of vibe and approach to eurorack. I don’t have Beads, but I do have the Morphagen. You have some great things going between the two. I came within a hairs-breath of getting Beads after see your vid. But I have the guitar pedal Microcosm, that does some pretty magical things in which I need to pair up with Morphagen. Also I have a Pamela’s New Workout expander with midi out, coming today which with allow me to sync up the Microcosm with my rack. Hoping it will meet expectations. Your video will always be there to remind me of the possibilities between Morph and Beads. Who knows, I might be getting Beads sooner than later. Then have Morph, Beads, and Microcosm. That might be all I need🧐Thanks again.

      So how did it turn out? Microcosm + Morphagene, that is. I've been considering getting a Microcosm. I have Beads and I like it, but wish it was as high fidelity as Morphagene.

    • @Larry30102
      @Larry30102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rdean150 Seems like you’d have a lot of creativity between Beads and Morphagene. Honestly, I’m mostly a classical guitar player who just happens to like synths🙄 That said, my rack hasn’t seen much action in the last month. That’s not to say I’m wanting for modules. To answer your question, Microcosm and Morph is pretty special. I haven’t mastered the phrase looper, but that would open up a lot of creative avenues. I had the most fun when I got the midi exp for Pams. That synced up Microcosm with my rack. If you get a microcosm and have Pams, I say the midi out mod would be a must. Sorry for the long response.

    The morph knob can be described pretty simply: more morph is more overlap. I'm not sure if this makes sense if you don't know what a gene is, so you want to start there. Once you know what a gene is, (it's a snippet of audio) morph=overlap is most of what you need to know.

    • @SycamoreWillow
      @SycamoreWillow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey yeah, great explanation! I guess the only thing I would add to that is that in addition to allowing the genes to overlap it also pitches them up and down in an increasing manner the more you turn the knob clockwise. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment dude!

    • @GeorgeLocke
      @GeorgeLocke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SycamoreWillow right. "It adds more and more overlap and at the highest end of the range it starts randomly inserting genes that are pitched up or down or reversed. If you really want to, you can go into the configuration text file and decide what pitches you want."

    I was shopping for a module for my birthday. Already have Beads, and was thinking how silly it would be to consider Morphagene. Really enjoyed your walkthrough. Made it very clear how useful it is to have both for sound design. I've ordered Maths and Morphagene and subscribed to your channel. Thx!

    Great ! May I ask on what setting is your morph knob ? Sounds like there’s both pitching down and up.

    • @SycamoreWillow
      @SycamoreWillow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there thanks for watching! During this video I was sweeping the morph knob fully through it's range. But when you're hearing both pitching up and down I suspect it's fully clockwise

    The issue I keep having with the Morphagene is that is a pain to get it back to play at normal speed after you have tweaked with the speed knob. They should've made a virtual indent.

    • @SycamoreWillow
      @SycamoreWillow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the one hand I completely agree with you and beyond that I wish you could somehow get it back to an exact pitch you said I'm sure there's a way to do it but it's of course not built into the device. But on the other hand sometimes wild unpredictable devices can really force one to be creative
