Once you get used to the 5 string, it is irreplaceable. it multiplies the scales, gets you a deeper tone, when you want it. Just make sure you know where all the notes are. The lesson on the 5 string is a good this for training and serious playing. Good stuff!
ended up with a five string (gift of a friend), never learned bass before, then was asked to do two songs in a cover band. am a keyboarder originally and just learned and had no change from 4 string to do as I had no idea what the difference would be, as I never played a four string :-)
How convenient,i was thinking about getting a 5 stringed bass. Never had a guitar nor a bass before but i did notice that i have quite abit of potential in playing a bass when playing my friend's bass
Thanks for bringing back this lesson! I had not seen it before. My recently acquired 5-string has a 35 inch scale. My greatest challenge so far is getting my fretting fingers to the best position close to each fret. The frets are a little farther apart than on my 4-string bass.
I watched this vid and ur next one on the 5 string, bc u admit, James that u are a 5 string Bass player, so I enjoyed wut u show us here. I played in a somewut lrg scale original country band for awhile and I dint really think about the change from 4 to 5 w the B string being in 4ths. Its a pretty easy change. The cowboy up front wrote the songs and I preferred the 5 over 4 in his original songs. It jist sounded BIGGER/PHATTER w the 5. After I left the band i sold my 5s. Now I dont play in a Band and I work on stuf that I wanna learn. So. I boughta 5string bc I wanted one. I bought it for ME! Im enjoying it and am learning the notes that are actually on the Bstring! Its fun. So. I appreciate ur videos on 5. Thx and Blessings. Be safe/well! dUg- Montesano, WA/USA
The main challenge is changing my low-note thinking between 4-string and 5-string. Occasionally, out of habit or inattentiveness, when I'm on the 4-string, I'll reach for the now non-existent low D or C, or the deeper, richer low E at the 5th fret. :-D
James thank you 4 the video but why you are don't use moveable anchor, floating foam or like Jaco ring finger muting technique??? When you start playing 3 octave D major scale at 4:40 after few second there is a string ringing.
You need very strong fingers to play those thick strings, from someone coming from guitar I played 4 string and got bored now im looking to get a 5 or 6 string bass for extra complexity and melody METAL
James, is the string spacing on a typical 5-string slightly different than a 4-string? I rarely play my 5-string because sometimes I miss the note with my fretting hand. It's an embarassment I can live without. Is it just me, or is this a common problem?
PerilousTactic, you Sir are NOT alone. I did exact same thing. Mine is a (TRBX605FM 5-String Electric Bass Matte Amber). I almost sold to get a 4 string, but I think I will keep it.
Yeah, I’ll take that in the chin... I’m dyslexic so so the brain saying one thing and the hands writing something else isn’t unusual. It’s never intentional.

Great - give it a shot!
Watch you become the next bootsy Collins🤣🤣

I started learning bass with a 5 string and I find it easier to transistion from 5 to 4 string rather than 4 to 5 string.
I’m starting with a 5-string bass as well.
Thanks for sharing that, Cherry!

Hey Doug! Congrats on the new 5 string! Glad to know you like the 5 string videos; definitely more of them coming in the future!
My biggest challenge is the narrow string spacing
Thanks for sharing that Oteko! That can be challenging, indeed.
Playing with floating thumb is a real challenge for me
Yeah, I get that’s. it’s not something I use a crazy amount...
It feels a little easier on the 5 vs the 4 for me I find myself doing it without trying
Me too.. LOL..
Thanks.
No problem Mathew

my biggest challenge is 50 yrs of 4 string muscle memory and confusing the E string for the A string
Thanks for sharing that Doug! Best of luck with your bass playing!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing that Steve! Cheers!
could you speak without waving your right hand ?
I love a good 5-string. Next would you be interested in talking about 6-string Basses? I have one and they are grate.
Hi John... I don’t actually own a 6 string bass! ;-)
Is it me or this dude looks like the old man from UP?
Haha! I get that a lot!

It can be slightly narrower... give it a measure and find out. It’s just a case of getting used to it normally :-)
My biggest challenge is keeping the B string muted when not in use.
Do you rest your thumb on it?
I use sort of an adaptation of the floating thumb technique to mute. It's a necessity for me because I have tiny hands and short fingers.
I play guitar. I've never held a bass. However, I just ordered a Yamaha 5 string bass? Is that a mistake?
Personally I’d start on a 4 string because the bottom 4 strings of the guitar are the same on a bass. 5 string normally adds and extra low B

i don’t know where to start it missing a string and don’t know what strings to buy!
The “Action Pack” link doesn’t work..
Hi Arnette, sorry about that... You can email us at support@ebassguitar.com and we'll sort it out for you.
So far me its the tight string spacing
Biggest challenge for me on a 5 string bass? Learning to slap and mute simultaneously...
Yeah! That can be really challenging. Thanks for sharing that Brian! All the best!
I've never played bass that's the challenge
Try it!
My biggest challenge is muting the B while slapping
That’s why many folks switch to a 4 string for slap...
@@ebassguitar yeah, that's a common consensus, and it's true, but there are people who've found a way to do it successfully.
i started on a 5 string, and never owned a 4 string...
Banyak cakap dari mainnya
Muting
Makes such a difference
Wish you would stop waving your hands around. Unwatchable!
Sorry Stephan, hand gestures are natural and essential part of human communication and I’m not willing to stop communicating in the best possible way.
@@ebassguitar spelling people’s names correctly is also essential to good communication.

Have you ever spent time in Italy? 🤌🏽
