It would be impossible to believe that a human being could make such sounds without being able to see this. No one else has ever sung this role with such absolute mastery.
The worlds best ever SALOME !!!!!!!! Birgit Nilsson.....and Richard Strauss will always be the greatest , most genius Composer of the 20th Century....thx for posting
I have to disagree. Her Salome is great but not even remotely as good as Ljuba Weltisch's. Nillson's might be the second best but Weltisch IS Salome like nobody else.
@@noone_at_midnight you might be right.:-)....i always have Nilsson also in mind as ELEKTRA and FÄRBERIN .....and for me she was always the best.....but thx for mentioning also the famous Ljuba Welitsch...
@@fabptitpom i agree with the op. The staging doesn't make sense, Hérode tells his wife "come, come !" While not moving his ass from his chair. When salome dies There are 2 poor soldiers that come to stab here what t f it's supposed be impressived, she should be crushed through her bones, under at least 5 or 6 soldiers, as the terrible and powerful music suggests it ! There is 0 mobility in the characters, that is not cohérent with the very lively, nervous and even schizophrenic music of Strauss.
Absolutely extraordinary! And no trashy modern perversity in the production. Alas, today this opera is so abused by sexualised scenery, while the subject is rather sad, of an abused child. We can see how attitudes changed since the times of Wilde and Strauss, and certainly the Bible. What a performance! Bravissima! The tenor Herod and mezzo Herodiade are also excellent.
albert combrink Agree the singing and acting are spectacular here. It was filmed in London in 1972, presumably at the ROH, unless filmed in a TV studio.
@Noack Somewhere I can’t argue with you, since you’re looking at the date stamp. But this emphatically does not sound like Nilsson in 1972. More like 1965. I heard her several times in the early 70’s, once in a concert ‘Salome’ with Solti. The sound was not this solid, and she had started belting the ‘acuti’.

Absolutely spellbinding
She was out of this world.
Superb! I saw her several times at the Met in this role. Magnificent memories!
How demonic! Nilsson you rascal, what an absolutely amazing artist!!
Superb performance…BRAVA!
magnifica
Boring staging, but her singing is absolutely off the chart. Birgit Nilsson is without question the GOAT!! Thanks for posting! 🤗
The staging follow the libretto, it's absolutely fine.
Unless you want modern eurotrash productions?

🌹BRAWISSISSISSIMO MAESTRI!!!💕
Awesome!!!
ANy information on where and when this performance was? Spectacular singing!

It wasn't a regular ROH performance, as I would have gone to one. Never saw her Salome, Elektra, Farberin, Fidelio and Walkure yes
It's included in the interview with Bernard Levin from 1972, a BBC program. th-cam.com/video/VLUEcBs0Wbw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=JoanSutherlandFan
I saw MARIA EWING at ROH her SALOME is first choice for many singers..RIP
The only Salome who could rival this is Ljuba Welitsch. Her recording of this final scene is amazing -- and can raise the hair on your head.
Maria Cebotari !!!❤
Jävlar.
What year? Anyone know?
