I have wanted one of these machines for quite a while and yesterday I purchased one on Ebay! It has been serviced and calibrated. Can't wait until it arrives this week! Thanks for the video!
Great machine and great music. Ever since I was a little kid I was fascinated by JMJ. When my father bought me the Oxygene tape and I got to listen to it through some great headphones I was absolutely amazed. I can not describe the feeling.
I have the same tape deck along with the rt 707. The rt 909 sounds great at 7 1/2 ips. At 3 3/4 ips the rt 707 sounds better. I wish it had 15 ips, I bet it would sound amazing at that speed. I really enjoyed this video thank you and have a great day..
Beautiful machine. I've got a Dolby equipped Revox A77 Mk.IV 2-track tape recorder. I love to see it work, and the sound quality is simply astonishing...
As the recorded track width increases with wider heads, so does the signal strenght, so the threshold for the amplifier is set higher, thus less hiss from the tape head. That's why Compact Cassettes have hiss, because the track width is pretty small, so the amplifier threshold is lower and more hiss of the tape head is amplified. Reel-To-Reel machines with their big wide tape heads do this beautifully, that's why in the early days of CD, the master recording was on Reel-To-Reel, because it literally sounded better than CD, also had a higher frequency response, sometimes going all the way to 60KHz (vs 22,050 KHz of CD). CDs with master recordings made on tape will say ADD on the cover, standing for Analog(Recording) Digital(Mixing) Digital(Transport [The CD itself]). I simply love Reel-To-Reel machines, too bad where i live they are too expensive. Damn you Brazil!
+André Campana Merétika The wider tape doesn't mean a stronger signal. It's just that the noise from the tape is a physical property of the tape, importantly an intensive property, so the same signal on a wider tape means the signal is larger with respect to the noise.
The problem is that even the best reel decks show huge dropdown after 20kHz. Not to mention 12 bits are enough to truthfully represent the sound from it in every detail.
8 ปีที่แล้ว +1
SFtheGreat Even though 12 bits might be enough, it also means a lot of noise is coming off the Digital to Analog converter, and that can really annoying, not to mention that what bit-depth really is, is the mininum volume differences registered in different intervals, in a sort of a vertical ruler, where the wave has to be approximated to "play by the rules"
Hermoso sonido!! Hermoso reel to reel, por favor subí el parte 4!! Excellent sound! Lástima que en mi país, poseer esto, te sale una fortuna!! Se escucha muy bien!!
Simply breathtaking..I would do crazy shit to own one of these....beautiful. Good choice of audio also, the stereo characteristics of the track couldn't be more perfect to use to demo this flawless piece of machinery and engineering. Cheers!! (Kona702....Jealous)
This post is years old but still have to congratulate you on that incredable find!! Wish I could afford a reel to reel but its out of reach for me right now.
nostalgic time and breathtaking music... these times will never return :( mp3`s and plastic sound from plastic chinese amplifiers ruined the essence of true sound... sadly
Hi, I believe that if you get the pinch rollers to engage but they won't spin thus avoiding the tape from advancing, then you probably have a bad belt. You can take off the top black cover to confirm this. This machine uses one belt only, you can buy it at eBay with instructions included on how to replace it. Note: If you find out that the belt is ok, please come back for further instructions.
I wish i had that machine . I have a Sony TC-280 . Sounds great but nothing like I would imagine that sounds in the room . Mine is 1973 . Great choice of music too . Legendary !
I wanted a pioneer RT909 since it came out, I was in high school at the time. I finally got one a few years ago. This guy was moving and had to sell it that day. He took 350 dollars plus another 20 for 10 maxell and tdk 10 1/2 inch reels and some 7 inch also. The deck is in mint condition and was recently gone over by a technician. He had all receipts, even the original bill of sale when he purchased it new. I got lucky that day.
With the development of metal cassette tapes which maintain a much slower speed, and a tiny width in comparison to reel to reel, surely some metal reel to reel tapes could be developed to spin at slower speeds. Thus the storage time would increase dramatically, or the size of reels could go down. Either way, the quality could be matched, and advanced with metal tapes, yes?
I am sorry. You have to have your head tested. You are trying to turn listening to the music into a fetish. And, unless you have a master tape copy, which is rare and ultra expensive, this "pleasure to listen" is inferior to CD, which is 700 MB image file (if you don't want to have it compressed). Now, we have a USB stick where you can fit all your music collection vs appliance-looking device. Yeah, it is kind of cool to stare at these 10 inch reels spinning. But really, this is not about music at all.
