“Can’t” 못 vs 지 못하다 vs 수 없다 | Korean FAQ

- 못, the 지 못하다 form, and 수 없다 can all be used to say “can’t.” Each of these three forms is different and not used in the same way. In this video you’ll learn what each one means, when to use each one, and which one you should use.

So 볼 수 없어요 would be like what a blind person would say? Because literally there is no way or ability for him to see anything.

왜냐하면 vs 어서 vs 이니까 vs 때문에

왜냐하면 means like the expression in English "If you ask why..."
And the 아/어 서 is the form where you should include the cause and effect to use it.
You can use 때문에 in formal speech and simply means 'because'.
(으)니까 Form also means 'because' but you should only use in casual or informal speech.
Example:너무 먹어서 배가 아팠어.너무 먹어서 Is cause and 배가 아팠어 Is the effect. I hope this helped.

I ate a lot (cause) so I'm sick/your stomack hurt (the consequence, the result of the cause)

Someone once told me that it was awkward to use -지 못하다 conversationally so I've been avoiding it since!
I recommend 못 over ~지 못하다 if you can, but if you can't then ~지 못하다 is fine :-)

Okay, if 못 해요 means „I can’t do it“, then how do you say „I *can* do it“ without using the 할 수 있어요 form?
It would depend on what it is you're trying to say. You can use 할 수 있어요 if you'd like a simple answer :)

Question. Is 수 없다 a bound noun?
I looked up that word one time on naver? And they said it was a bound noun. What is a bound noun exactly?
A "bound noun" just means it's always used together with other grammar forms (such as adjectives in various tenses), and not used by itself like other nouns - that's really it. But at the same time, it still has meaning and functions as any noun.

You could say use like 못 보겠다 (못 보겠어요, etc.).

So 요리를 못 해요 is I can’t cook (as in not well)
요리를 못해요 is I can’t cook (as in I can’t cook at all) ?
I think 요리 못 해요 is I can't cook right now, like maybe I'm busy, and 요리 못해요 is I can't cook well, and that you don't need 를 in this case. That's what I understood from the video but I may be wrong!

못하다 is that you don’t have the ability or skill to do it, 못 하다 will definitely have a reason why you can’t do it now or something

Yes, but you would want to conjugate it before saying it in a sentence. For example, "하지 못해요."
I thought I understood this already, but there's so much conflicting info online and also now I'm suddenly wondering what the difference between '[V]지 못하다' and '[N]를 못하다' is... (e.g. 노래하지 못하다, 노래를 못하다)
못하다 is for things you're not able to do well (i.e. "I can't sing. Don't even ask.").

I’m always confused with:
냐고 하다 / 내요
ㄴ/는다고 하다 / ㄴ/는대요
라고 하다/ 래요
자고 하다/ 재요
I somehow get it I think but still.. I get confused all the time. 😝✨
For something like 'I can't play the piano' or 'I can't swim' which one would you use? I'm guessing (으) ㄹ 수 없다 because you lack the skill? (even though it is possible to learn it)

~기 싫다 is only for informal speech (it's more "casual" sounding), while ~고 싶지 않다 isn't restricted to that.
