I always get inspired to do my best when I get to play with so many outstanding musicians in my Big Band. When it`s time to do my one featured solo, the people will let you know right away if they like what they are hearing. That`s the great part about doing live concerts. I have so many idea`s as I`m playing, that I keep trying them out on my drums. I thank you so much for your comment.
I bought those Slingerland drums way back in 1977. Never thought that one day I would use them in my own Big Band. It`s all the drums I need. When I do one of these open drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concert. I have learned from all the great Big Band drummers like Buddy Rich, Sonny Payne, Mel Lewis, Butch Miles to always give 100% in my performance. You might like this other new video I posted using these same drums at another concert I did th-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/w-d-xo.html Of course I love to drive the Big Band and support my fellow musicians when playing these type of charts. It`s all about the music first for me as a drummer band leader. Thanks so much Russ for your comment.
Buddy Rich would be proud. You're drumming is well,no words to describe. Excellent and so enjoyable to watch, over, and over. True inspiration. Thank you!
I got to see Buddy many times in person. I even told him one day I want to have a Big Band like him. He told me don`t let anyone tell you it can`t be done. Well as one of the rare drummer Big Band leaders today, I did get it done. I became a huge BR fan because of the music he played. I have posted 100`s of my Ken Loomer Big Band concerts on my youtube channel. Please check them out. I get to do one featured drum solo in my concert and always want them to be exciting and dynamic for the people I play for. But I enjoy so much just driving the Big Band and supporting my outstanding musicians. Thanks so much for your comment.
o@@Salemaze What`s so nice to me Sal is I get to play on my classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals. It has the right sound for the type of drumming that I do. Thanks for your comment.
That performance was legit! With no plug-in Mic and anything else, the drummer is able to control sound which ever he maybe, Pure drumming , he is real, No Joke. I can tell everyone in the BallRoom hall, enjoying and Waiting his breakdown, i mean this guy need a huge “Wow!” Thanks for Uploading
What you hear is the real sound of these classic Slingerland drums since I have no mic`s on them. I like to use dynamic`s in my solo. The best part is you can hear the clear sound out of my old 70`s A Zildjian cymbals. I want my solo to be exciting for the people I play for. Thanks so much for your comment.

I just feel the music so much so when it`s my turn to do my featured solo, I want it to be exciting and just trying out new idea`s all the time. Coming from a professional drummer like you, I thank you Sal for your comment.
You are fantastic!! Of course of hear and see a lot of Buddy Rich in your playing, but you are very much an individual and not an imitation. You're a true artist in your own right! You're SO refreshing to watch in a world of brash gospel chops. Thank you for sharing your gift sir! BTW, I play a 1963 Slingerland that's the same color as your kit. Love those classics!
Wonderful you have a classic Slingerland drum set Marcus. Like what my late father told me, always learn from the best but add your own touch when you play. I never forgot what my dad told me .I learned from my dad to work hard to get what you want to do. Well I always wanted to have my own Big Band. With hard work and the desire to do it, the Ken Loomer Big Band is alive and well. Playing on my classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals is a big part of my sound. That was one of the best bands I ever saw in the 70`s. I know Carl Palmer loves Big Band music and knew Buddy Rich very well. I just heard a recording of Carl Palmer sitting in with the Buddy Rich Big Band at Ronnie Scott`s club in London back in 1986. I would of loved to play one time with Emerson and Lake. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks M.D. so much for your comment.
@@KenLoomer I totally understand. I just completely overhauled the first kit I ever owned, a 1961 Slingerland kit four-piece with a Radio King snare. I played it for the first time in 19 years last week. Not to sound too cheesy, but it’s absolute magic to sit behind and play. I’ve also got Zildjian As, but mine are from the ‘90s except for my hi-hats, which are 1979 New Beats. I typically play a great Pearl kit that I love, but there’s something about those Slingerlands that connects deep down. BTW, your kit looks like the same Buddy Rich model from the 1976 Slingerland catalog that I memorized as a kid. I’ll bet your snare has a TDR strainer, right? Take care, Ken, and keep swingin’. Buddy would be proud of your work, I’m sure.
@@michaelandcolinspop That is so wonder M.D. that you fixed up your classic 1961 Slingerland drum set. I`m sure you are enjoying playing your Slingerlands again. The Slingerland set I used in this video is a 1977 BR 80N model just like in that Slingerland 76 catalog. Ken, I ran across this TH-cam Short demonstrating a drumming illusion in rhythm. The snare seems to lose time but is just redivided. It's easier to pull off against a familiar 4/4 song of course. I thought this might get your brain humming. th-cam.com/users/shorts9rtGnyjkDvs
@@KevinTambling I just checked out that video. It`s beat displacement which is so cool to do. I have tried it at a few gigs, but of course the musicians looked at me and saying, what are you playing that for? Fun to do only in your own band, or playing at home to a track. Thanks Kelvin.
Hi Ken! Great Work! Excellent Technique! My first kit was a Slingerland with Zildjians. My original cymbals were from the 50's and 60's. There was no A; there was no K. In 1973, I picked up a ping and another crash. I stopped playing in 1974, and went to college. In 2008, I started playing again, and picked up a Sonor kit with an extra Pearl B1330 Piccolo Snare and new A and A custom Zildjians. A year later, my oldest son, brought me my original cymbals. Now in my 70's, my arthritis is fairly severe and I can't play like I used to. Despite that, I use sticks and a pad daily, and every so often, go to town on the kit. I spend a lot of time checking out new up and coming drummers. I like a lot of the drummers coming out of Japan right now. I think you would like Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato. I've seen Senri play some things that Buddy Rich would never be able to do. I see a lot of great promise for the future of drumming. Thanks for your video! Russ
That is wonderful Russ you started playing drums again back in 2008. Like you said, even with your advance arthritis, it`s not stopping you from playing. What Buddy had most of all to me was his feel for the music he played. Sure he had amazing technique, but his feel for the music made it sound so much better. Don`t forget he was so far ahead of any other drummers when he played during his career. I will check out those drummers you said in Japan. My love is being a drummer Big Band leader and just supporting my fellow musicians to make the music feel good. It keeps me young and alive. Thanks so much Russ for your comment and all my best to you always. Keep on playing your drums!!
@@KenLoomer Hi Ken! To be honest, I received an introduction to Buddy Rich in January of 1972. He was less than cordial. His Bass player, Paul Conjello, had sympathy towards me, and I worked with Paul for 6 months. My first studio work was in September of 1971. My older brother was a jazz drummer, and they were jazz musicians; but for some reason they wanted me. I was a rock drummer. So, I just listened to what they were doing, and composed a drum part that I thought would mesh with it. It came out kind of like fusion before fusion. The next time I got called up was to replace a drummer that couldn't play a drum part to a ballad. I just played triplets. The producer was ecstatic! From then on, I kept getting called in to studios in Montclair, West Orange, and Short Hills just to play slow music.
@@Russ.Murphy I saw Buddy Rich perform back in 1971 with his great Big Band with Paul Kondziela on fender bass. I love the chart Paul Kondziela composed called Paul`s Tune on the Different Drummer album. He is an excellent bass player for sure. So wonderful you got to work with Paul as a young drummer. I know everyone has their stories about Buddy Rich. He was always so kind to me. I even got a drum lesson from him in 1977 and he let me play his Slingerland drums. wow! this is one of ur greatest if not the greatest solo. love the electric bass in sunburst. had one just like it only mine was an ibanez blazer and dont think i didnt notice ur blazing bass drum speed!
Since I do so many concerts and performance, I always want to do different types of solo. This one I did a lot of just cymbal solo work and the sound of my old A Zildjians really came out so clear. I have a 20 inch Ping ride great to cut through the brass, left side is a 18 inch thin crash, right side is a 18 inch medium thin crash, 22 inch swish, 6 inch thin splash, and the wonderful 13 inch New Beat hi-hat cymbals. Best feeling for me as a drummer having a Big Band and supporting my outstanding musicians with my classic real Slingerland drums. Thanks Seven for your comment.
Any drummer who can do a 7 minute solo and have the audience on the edge of their seats the entire time is legitimately good. Well done, sir.

Hi Ken!
Here is the video I made about Buddy showing lots of pictures of me and Buddy th-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/w-d-xo.html One of the pictures you can see Paul playing bass with Buddy that I took. Since I do so many concerts and performance, I always want to do different types of solo. This one I did a lot of just cymbal solo work and the sound of my old A Zildjians really came out so clear. It`s all about the music first for me. When I get to do my one featured drum solo in my concert, I want it to be exciting and dynamic. I try to always give 100% in my performance. Thanks Michael for your comment.
Amazing drum solo ! 👏👏
Being a drummer Big Band leader is a joy for me since I get to play with so many outstanding musicians. I always try to give 100% in every performance I do. Thanks for your comment.
Nice solo....He got better as it went along. 👍 Buddy Rich style, absolutely.
If your going to emulate somebody, Buddy Rich was the best ever.
Good solo. Outstanding.
Like what my father told me, always learn from the best. Like always, I try to build a drum solo slowly, tell a story and then have a hell of an ending. Having my own Big Band and playing this great music with my outstanding musicians always inspire me to play at my best. Thanks so much for your comment.
@KenLoomer Awesome, man. I liked the cymbal work as well. You played on every percussion piece in your kit. The solo was musical. Thank you.
Very nice, Sir. I wish they would invite you to appear on the next Buddy Rich Memorial Concert.
Cathy Rich dose know about me, so I would be honored to do one of those BR Memorial Concerts. Of course I honor BR all the time by having a swinging Big Band and playing a lot of his great music. Buddy was always about the music first. I have posted so many of his charts over the years. Thanks for your comment.
And on Buddy Rich's deathbed, he threw the drumsticks of destiny out the window and straight into the hands of a little boy named Ken 😂
Fantastic playing!
I got to see Buddy Rich in person many times. I for sure learned so much from him, like to always give 100% in every performance that you do. Thanks so much for your comment.
Stop right there!!!!
You mean to tell me that Ken himself! Responded to my comment!
How gracious and personal!! I was NOT expecting that! Ken your aptitude, skill, and knowledge of Big band jazz drumming is unmatched by anyone…. AND your are considerate and gentleman enough to respond to your fans personally!!!!
What planet did you arrive from?!?!!
LOL !
Sincerely, ETG
If someone takes the time to make a comment about my video, that means a lot to me. So of course I will respond back. I`m from the planet Jazz! Just to let you know, my hobby is astronomy and many a night I take out my telescope and look at the planets and stars. Thanks Eric so much for your comment.
Nicely done Sir.
I just love playing on these classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals. They have the best sound for the type of drumming that I do. It brings out the best in me. Thanks Peter for your comment.
Bravissimo 👏
Playing on these classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals brings out the best in me. Thanks for your comment.
Incredible
The sound of my old A Zildjian cymbals was incredible to me. I just played them for one part of my solo and wonderful to hear the response from the people while I was doing my solo. Thanks Chris for your comment.
Very nice. Excellent playing.
When I do these type of open drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic. I always give 100% in the performance that I do. Thanks Terry for your comment.
@@KenLoomer You are definitely an awesome drummer. I enjoyed watching your solo. Nice job. I will continue to watch for any other video that you do. Have a great day
@@KenLoomer Excellent. What area are you in? I'm a drummer in the DC area. I studied percussion with Ron Barnett of the Kennedy Center Orchestra. JK
@@terrybrann730 The good news is that I have well over 1000 video`s of my bands that I have posted on my youtube channel. I post new video`s all the time. Thanks so much Terry for enjoying my drumming. I`m still learning all the time.
@@InfoArtistJKatTheGoodInfoCafe I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I wish I could have a road Big Band and play all over the country, but those days are long gone now. Florida has been good to me with booking my Big Band. I have posted 100`s of concerts on my channel. Wonderful you have studied percussion with an excellent teacher. I did the same learning vibes, snare drum, and of course set playing. All my best to you with your music and drumming!
Great job could you detail your cymbal set up? Thanks.
I just love playing on my 70`s A Zildjian cymbals. They have the perfect sound for the type of playing that I do. The ride is a 20 inch Ping, the right crash is a 18 inch thin, the left crash is a 18 inch medium thin, 22 inch swish which I love, a thin 6 inch splash, and the wonderful 13 inch New Beat hi-hat. Zildjians are the best cymbals for me! Thanks Greg for your comment.
Totally amazing cymbal work
I don`t see many drummers today use just the cymbals when doing a drum solo. These old A Zildjian cymbals sound so great to me and the tone is so clear. Thanks for your comment.
Brilliant
Just doing what I love which is playing in these concerts with my Big Band. Got to give 100% all the time when I play. Thanks Tim for your comment.
awesome drumming
I just love so much playing on these classic Slingerland drums. Plus doing these type of concerts with my Big Band brings out the best in me. Thanks for your comment.
Wauw this is just amazing im blown away 😃👍👍👍
After playing for the first two hours and then doing my featured drum solo, I`m amazed I could still play and do this. But I always want to give 100% in every performance that I do. Thank you so much for your comment.
Stupendous!
When I do these type of open drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concert. Thanks for your comment.
This was FIRE!
It`s the only way I know how to play ! Thanks for your comment.
Nice work!
Having my own Big Band and playing with these outstanding musicians always brings out the best in me. Thanks for your comment.
Awesome Ken.
I want my open type of solo to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come to my concert. I always give 119% in every performance that I do. Thanks so much George for your comment.
nice!
Watching from Japan.
I would love to one day play in Japan with my Ken Loomer Big Band. Hope to see you at my concert Kazu Naka!
Amazing
I love playing on my classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals. They have the perfect sound for my type of drumming. Thanks for your comment.
Buddy smiles down upon Ken Loomer.
I think Buddy is most happy that a drummer like me would do all the hard work of having a Big Band and playing some of his music for the people of today. I love being a drummer Big Band leader. Thanks for your comment.
great bass drum sound! quite a foot you got!
I like the wide open sound that John Bonham and Buddy Rich had with their bass drum. I`m using the heel down technique which works for me to be relaxed. Thanks Craig for your comment.
awesome technik
I use my technique to be able to do what I`m thinking at that moment to make this type of open drum solo an exciting one. Of course it takes years of practice to do it and I want to look relax when I m playing. Never want to tense up, since that will not be good. Thanks Andrew for your comment.
Well done🥁🥁🥁
Glad you enjoyed this video. I enjoyed so much doing this concert with my Big Band.
WOW ;;;; WOW ::::: WOW :::::: GREAT DRUM SOLO!!!!!!!!! GREETINGS FROM GERMANY!
When I get to do my one drum solo feature with my Big Band, I want it to be exciting. Plus playing on my classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals brings out the best in me. Thanks Gerald from Germany for your comment.
Great stuff 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
When I do these type of an open solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting. Thanks for your comment.
Respect!
I respect you for letting me know.
Plays like Buddy Rich! Well done!
A big part of what I do when playing this type of open solo is the Buddy Rich style of an exciting and dynamic performance. I got to know Buddy from seeing him and his great band so many times. He was always so kind to me. He even gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. I`m so glad I had my camera with me on so many of his concerts. To see pictures with me and Buddy and me playing on his drums, go to this video th-cam.com/video/BTsnnA6nlvk/w-d-xo.html I told Buddy that one day I wanted to have a Big Band like his because I love the music he played so much. Buddy was moved and told me, "Ken, don`t ever let anyone tell you having a big band and playing the music you love can`t be done. Just work hard and go for it young man". Well with hard work and the desire to do it, I do have my Ken Loomer Big Band. I always play some of his great music at my concerts. Here is a video I just posted of his great chart Porgy and Bess th-cam.com/video/bdh1P-6LqMc/w-d-xo.html Of course no one can ever play like him, but only do his style of playing, but most important to me is that I can still play some of his great music with my Big Band. Thanks Mark for your comment.
Utterly masterful
I always want to give 100% in every performance that I do. Plus on love playing on these classic Slingerland drums and Zildjian cymbals. Thanks Luke for your comment.
Hi Ken I was also hoping you could share specifics on your cymbal set-up, sizes etc. Also I loved your solo and that you have a big band. There's nothing better than the sound of a real horn section except the sound of real drums!🥁🎺🥁🎷🥁🎺🥁🎷🥁
I`m using all early 70`s A Zildjian cymbals.
