I was just talking about this transmission today, about the early models. We knew a guy that forgot to refill the gear lube in the differential after a rebuild. He didn't know it had a separate reservoir for gear lube, NOT ATF. He left it bone dry. The transmission literally caught on fire LOL!!! The Bosses were super pissed!!The transmission was completely toasted again. Funny now a days, but not at the time.
Gary. Thanks for the awesome video. I was curious if you have a video of you removing the pinion shaft from this transmission. I need to replace the outer bearing and race right behind the gear. I can't remember if the the whole shaft has to be removed or can I leave the differential in place and only remove the gear to access the bearing and race. Thanks!
It may come out, but i always take it apart to clean it, in the front bellhousing, if there is a centering plug for the pinion, remove that make sure it's ok and you can knock the pinion out that way too.
Hey gary awesome video i have a 99 sienna that lost all gears on the transmission i got codes p0500 and p0750 where is solenoid 1 and what do you think caused this its my work van so i need this thing back on the road
Hi Gary, thanks for the great video! Do you happen to know what causes this gearbox to not start from 1st gear in D mode? The solenoid has been changed and it doesn't cure the issue. The fault code is related to the solenoid and the O/D indicator lamp flashes for the same fault code. Any input is much appreciated! Thanks once again.

Not sure if you still answer questions. My 1998 sienna with A540E just went out. I found a junk yard 2002 with A541E transmission. Would the internals be compatible to transplant into my Sienna?

If I can transplant the gears I should alright. I just wanted verification from a fellow mechanic. My Sienna is a 98 so the transmission is different.
Gary good evening, wanted to ask you a quick question. i overhauled an A540e out of a 98 toyota sienna. when i was test driving the truck it the transmission bangs on all gears... i mean from 1-4th gear and sometimes lock up. after a while it kind of goes away but 1-2 remains pretty hard. i did change all the check balls on the valve body, one valve was stuck and was able to loosen it up now it moves freely. i doble checked valve body and checkballs but i found nothing. did you ever come a cross something like this shift solenoids checked at 15.5 ohms. is this a good resistance within specs. thanks in advance and great videos.

@@GaryFerraro wanted to share what I found. I made a mistake and installed the valve stopper on the wrong side. Found a diagram and I changed it. Problem solved. 1990 Lexus es250 with a540E transmission, I can’t find anywhere how much fluid to refill it with. Dropped the pan and cleaned the screen and magnets. Just need to refill it now

I have a A540E transmission myself that has trouble shifting and is jerky I was considering taking the valve body off and replacing the solenoid as well, my question is which one was clogged up for you I was thinking it might be the SLN solenoid as my car doesn’t shift smoothly and it downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear rough sometimes, any help would be greatly appreciated, you definitely earned a subscriber!
@@GaryFerraro it seems to shift on time, sometimes it shifts a bit late at like 3000 rpm’s and if it does go to 3000rpm and I let my foot of the gas the car shifts gears

Quick question, I rebuilt the transmission out of a personal vehicle, a 1989 Camry 2.5 with the A540E. I have forward gears, but no reverse. It's like I'm stall testing it. I had to open it up due to a thrust washer not letting it spin freely in the direct drum. My sun shell goes Clock-wise when I spin the planetary counterclock-wise So I can assume my Sprag shiny up. Question is, I could have possibly put the sprag in the over-drive part of it backwards while cleaning it up. Would that cause an issue or might I have covered up a oiling orifice when I siliconed the cover on?
@@GaryFerraro Yes, all the tubes are in place. I've had to take out the valve body quite a few times that I've memorized exactly where they go, still have a picture for reference in case I cannot remember. I just wanted to get lead in the right direction in where the problem lies. I can get reverse but it's as if I'm stall testing it with my foot on the brakes and locked up.

I understand that this code could be triggered by a number of different reasons , which bring me back to my initial question , instead of fixing and rebuilding my current tyranny, theres many lexus' and siennas at my local yards which carry the 540E transmission that could be a perfect donor if the front diff or transfer case line up. Because the 540h is almost impossible to find. Thank you
@@GaryFerraro Standing in front of the car hood open, I should look towards back side? I opened up throttle body and the bottom cable is transmission cable which has to be set according to transmission line pressure. The issue is that the transmission has been jerky since I cleaned up throttle body and have worse gas mileages. It is the transmission cable the bottom one on the throttle body. What do you think or suggest? Thank you!
Gary Ferraro Every gear but especially 1st like as if it’s having trouble pushing the weight of the car but only if I press on the throttle too much. If I ease into it it won’t slip but I mean really ease in to it. Every other gear seams to slip too but since the gears don’t have to work as much to push the weight of the car it doesn’t slip as much.
Gary Ferraro It’s a ‘97 Avalon and it started to slip last week and when I changed the fluid it was BLACK. Then i added new oil and stop slip and it helped a little but it looks like permanent damage to me but I’m wondering where the damage is. Also I didn’t change the filter I was in a hurry but I’m planning on redoing it and changing the filter soon.

What is the excact trouble of this transmission,( no engage, slipping, or delay shifting?

If it’s electrical either solenoid wire or computer. I would ohm the solenoid at the computer this will check the wire going down to solenoid

May not be, solenoids may be different, where did you get the transmission from?

How are your engagements into drive or reverse? how was the pressure regulator valve, almost sounds like it may be stuck

Just looked on shopkey, not much info but you have a dipstick, put in 3 quarts and start the car and check the fluid level

there is a cable on this trans? if so, did you try to adjust
@@GaryFerraro yes, the kickdown cable right? Mine was tightened to the max and I loosened it back to stock position, didn’t seem to make a difference

Reverse i believe is fed through the back cover(overdrive section) All the tubes in place?

I have an A541E and it’s slipping is it similar to this engine? If it is why is it slipping?
