I grew up out in the sticks.the only nightly noises we heard was the peepers and crickets. I'm now living out in the country again

I was raised in the country where at night you could hear the crickets and frogs chirping and miles down the road you could hear the train coming through the town next to us! So faint but comforting while I slept! We had a creek where I was always visiting daily as a child, looking for fossils, crawdads and collecting rocks! Neighbors had ponies and we use to rid them bareback through our creek beds and pretend we were explorers! Country life is the best indeed!
I think you and Katie have a mixture of both you Mother and Father!

I was raised in wooded country too. The only thing I could hear was crickets, or night birds. We had a lot of owls. Hoot Hoot. Early in the morning our carrier pigeons left their little roosting house and flew around all day. At dusk the pigeons would come back. We could hear their going and coming. Like you, we had chickens. A rooster crowing in the morning was my Mom's alarm clock. It was pretty much pitch black except on full moons. There was a huge magnolia tree outside my bedroom window. I loved it when it bloomed. Loved your video. Nothing can replace a real picture. 😊❤

I lived in the country too, as a young child, but I don't remember it ever being pitch dark. On a clear night, even without a moon it seemed bright from the stars, we could see pretty well unless we got deep under the trees. I don't remember it being silent like Corie said either , there was always the house creaking or the wind, or a critter rustling or something. I don't ever remember lying in bed at night and not hearing anything at all.

Birth to 11 We lived about 1 1/2 miles off of the highway. Porch and bath added when we were very little. Dad a farmer and mom a teacher stayed home from my birth to my sister in Kindergarten. With my mother her teacher. From 1st to 5th grades we stayed on the backside of our 340 acre farm. The summer of 5th grade we built house 800 feet from the paved Hwy on the front part of the farm. Always surrounded by faith family and friends.

@@thepressleygirls Corie, when you showed that thre generation photo it brought back a memory of when my then husband and I, along with a ten month old Jonathan, had gone to his sister's wedding in Pennsylvania. He was in the Marines and was going to walk his sister down the aisle and give her away. At the reception, a photographer got a photograph of Five generations of my husband's family; his great grandma, his grandpa [we called him Pop Pop], his mother, my hubby and our son Jonathan. That's something to see I'll tell you.

Our family on mom's side always sang. My dad was in a quartet on the radio. That was a big thing back then My dad was born in 1941 and mom 1947. Like your family we listened to and sang gospel and bluegrass music.

I've lived in both city and country. I love the quiet of country. When I had to move back to a city I felt like I was being assaulted by all the noise, particularly emergency vehicle sirens and helicopters. I wasn't born in a musical family, but other branches of the family were and so a love of music seem to have been passed to kids not exposed to it in the immediate family. I love seeing the pictures and hearing the story of the house you grew up in. I grew up in a John F. Long home in Arizona. He was a builder who earned a name for innovative, practical and economical home design in the 1940's -1960's. I did like that home. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

I love this!!! The only sounds I like at night are the crickets, frogs, owls and cicadas , a night time serenade (and I love a whippoorwill but I don’t hear those much these days). The only light I want at night is the moon. I had a friend from the city come out to visit after my husband and I were first married and the first thing she said was it sure is dark out here because she was used to street lights.😂 I think it is so sweet that you and your sister embrace your upbringing and heritage, it makes me hopeful for the generations to come. This was a great video, thanks for sharing your memories!!!😊Oh and by the way the porch you mentioned that has the porch swing now, every time I see it in your’s or your mom’s videos I get homesick for my granny’s place, it looks just like I’m standing on her porch looking at the mountain beyond.

You know I’ve never met another soul that had a childhood like mine, obviously I knew they had to exist but until today I’ve never come across one. My dad is a bluegrass musician and so was my uncle, they practiced in our basement constantly and usually at night. I fell asleep to the sounds of their music and singing my whole childhood and those are memories I will cherish forever. There is nothing like it. When I tell people “my family is made of music” they never understand what I mean unless they too grew up like I did which has yet to happen. My brother wrote his first song when he was five. I didn’t learn as a child because my dad wanted me to play fiddle and I was jealous of my brother who was playing guitar.. idk why.. I think even at such a young age I didn’t wanna be pigeonholed into the “girl instrument” lol god how I wish I hadn’t been that way 🤦🏻‍♀️ after an extremely early retirement from my dream career due to health issues I finally had the time as an adult to learn how to play. Not long after that my uncle passed and I inherited his antique fiddle that I cherish dearly. I also inherited another of his fiddles but the antique one is the one he played all the time and the one I play all the time. There is nothing that can compare to the experience of growing up in a family like mine or yours and the folk music of our mountains is a huge part of what makes that special. Music is in my blood, it is a part of every part of my life and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in all the world. Thank you for sharing its nice to see someone who knows what this life of music is 💖
Oh my gosh I know what you mean about the old square body chevys. I have my dads 97 Silverado but I’d love to have an older one too

I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. There was noise, trains, street lights, all kinds of stuff. We had a vacation house in the Pocono mountains of northeast PA. I always loved it there. When I was 18 I realized I hated living near the city. I ended up moving to the Poconos and marrying my wife and we have lived here ever since. I was also blessed to be born into a musical family. (My paternal) Grandmother (born in 1910) told us one of her earliest memories was going to her (maternal) grandparents' house very often. They also lived "up in the hills & hollers" of northern Middle Tennessee. After a big meal they'd always play music & sing. Grandmother was around 3 yrs old & remembered going into a bedroom where there was a big feather bed with something lying on top of it. She said she stretched up as far as she could & saw that the whole bed was full of instruments.

Old photographs are precious. Over the years I had moved so many times, and been homeless a few times, and somewhere along the way lost most of my photos. It used to be you might have one or a handful of photos of your relatives. But we're coming to a time when people will pull out "hundreds" of selfie photos their grandmother took of herself. --- The one and only thing I have always managed to hang on to through the years is a little white porcelain duck with a red hat that was given to me when I was 7 years old. I had never seen another like it then I found an identical one for sale on etsy. And after telling the woman about the one I had for for so many years she sent me the one she had at no charge, even though I was willing to pay what she was asking. So I got two identical porcelain ducks given to me 53 years apart from each other. Almost 15 years later and I still have never seen another like these two. They are the one thing I own that I want to make sure my children (twins) get when I pass on.

I was raised like you where the house was secluded, dark, & quiet at night in WV. When we married, we moved into an apartment in Charlottesville, VA. I didn’t like it. We moved back to WV a lil’ over a year later into a rental by the main road. I grew used to traffic. We had to move back to VA about 10 years due to economic reasons. We bought a house but it definitely is not like I was raised. It was so hard for me to come “out of the mountains” that I loved. I am very happy for you & Austin. You’ll get to start out fairly close to your family. You’ll be able to have some privacy but still stay close. Wish you love & prayers. 💕

I would have to say you girls definitely favor your Mom. I couldn't picture you girls with a mustache lol. Enjoyed the history of your families. I to grew up in a musical family. Played guitar, in my younger days I played bass in church. Now that I got older I don't play anymore, my guitar stays in the closet these days. I do miss the days playing music with the family. Today's music is not music to me just my opinion. The music you and family plays is the music I connect with. Keep on keeping on. God bless.

I teared up when you were telling about when your parents found out there was two of you guys❤️....I love that you shared pics and memories with us. Y’all’s home is definitely beautiful. I really like how the garden is now. I call your mama “Mama Tipper” around my house “oh I learned that from Mama Tipper”...I’m saving some bacon grease next time I cook so that I can fry my corn like she does. Thanks for sharing with us Corey❤️

I moved to the country (though on a major highway) when I was 10. My Daddy and me worked on an old shotgun house that hasn't been occupied since the depression. It was a pretty old thing. When we moved there the house had never been plumbed. So, we adapted it to a three bedroom, two bath, adding a utility room and eventally we filled in the well out back.

You are right, growing up & moving on your own IS bittersweet! The best thing you can own is a piece of land. My parents, brother & I moved frm pillar to post bc we had no land. Y'all are blessed. And I think y'all favor your Moma.🤗

You can adapt to any sleep condition, When I was an older teenager my family lived across the street from the emergency room of a hospital in Durham, N.C.. This took some getting used to. My parents bought land out in the country and built a house, there wasn't anyone around them for at least a mile. First night was sooo creepy. There was no light and a fox screamed . Never heard that sound before and me and my mom met each other in the hallway. I adapted to the dark also.

Thank you for sharing your memories and photos. So many feelings come up at times like this, moving out, starting a major new chapter in your life. Well, first I just have to acknowledge those 90s dresses. My nieces all over again! Oh my. You both look like your momma. Thank goodness, because those 90s mustaches give me the shudders. 😉. I grew up outside town, with hills to roam in, and back in those days we could be gone till dinner time. Forts, of course. Swimming in Lake Coeurd’Alene. Collecting the old glass telephone insulators from the power lines. We did not have musicians, but did take some lessons. We did sing in the car with dad though. Lol. Hey, have a wonderful day!

You are indeed lucky-- and even more lucky to know that you are lucky! Growing up on your own farm or ranch is an indescribably wonderful thing --- if one has not had the privileged there is almost no way you can describe the special feelings you have for every little familiar place you get to know on your land -- in my case our land was native prairie near North Dakota/Montana and Saskatchewan intersections. We and our cousins would find native American artifacts -- arrowheads and tomahawks etc any day we wanted to. There one high hill on our land that had huge boulders near the top -- that overlooked miles of prairie below -- it was such a thrill to sit there looking at the vista and knowing that Sioux or the Crow there so long ago had probably found that high plains lookout as thrilling and important for their security we did. Yes you are lucky to live the way you have -- I had to make my own music thing though! 😂🤣😂 So you REALLY be lucky!!

Thanks for this sweet video & showing us the photos. Katie said in that Q & A video that she was positioned in your momma's womb in such a way that she had a tilt to her head after birth for awhile. So maybe in those baby photos her head might be tilted & that's how you can tell who's who. Of course your momma would know 😀
Edit: I forgot to mention that you look so much like your mom. So does Katie, but you more so. Y'all are beautiful 🤗

It's nice to stroll down memory lane time to time. We left Swain County. NC around 93 and moved to north Ga after our house burned down. Up to that point it was some of my most memorable years. I've got family in Franklin, and Bryson City still. Great place to live and raise a family. I got 4 boys and my baby girl is 10. It's alot of work, but I wouldn't trade a minute. Congratulations to y'all. I pray the blessings continue to rain down on you and yours. It's going to be a ride I promise you that. Thank you for sharing.

I grew up in the country but not secluded, but very dark and I was afraid to step outside at night...I live in the city for past 35 years and I actually prefer having close neighbour's and streetlights...we still have lots of critters around at night and have to keep an eye out when stepping out at night...my street is fairly quiet and not busy at all so very little traffic at night...your Mom and Dad's house and property is beautiful...your and Austin's house is very awesome with the back decks...loved this video!

I grew up in the suburbs and rural area. Neither town even had a red light back then. Now one of the towns has 2. Lol. Then i joined the army, met my husband in it also, and we spent 25 yrs traveling the world with 3 kids. My goal is to get to the country one day again. Nice to hear the history of your family and home. My pap built most of his house, too. My aunt still lives in it today. God bless you guys!
