To this day, Psychatog is still my favorite magic card of all time. The card brings back some interesting and fond memories of playing Magic at Arby's on Saturday nights back in high school.
I was about to say that it is crazy we both played Magic at an Arby's, and then I realized we played at the same Arby's! Thought of your old Extended Psychatog deck a lot while making this one haha.
Why no mention of the guy who won the championship aka the best psychatog player Carlos Romao? I love this deck. Playing psychatog is like you always on the edge, low life and timing your counters while letting the other player do things but not so much you die.
I have trauma from my teenage years playing against my friend's Psychatog deck. I still can't see the damn 'tog or Upheaval without feeling my salt levels go up.
Where I lived we called this deck cookies or Trakinas(which is a brand of cookies designed with silly faces) because of psychatog round face. It was a cery popular deck along with wild mongrel treshold decks and hunting fields decks.
I’m so glad this topic won your poll, it shows interest in the history of the game from your viewers. It really shows since as you note, psychatog hasn’t been relevant in almost 15 years
Just wondering, have you heard of the Hulk Smash psychatog deck in T1 (before it was called Vintage)? It used green for Pernicious Deed, and would Cunning Wish for Berserk to double down on damage and allow the deck to have a combo finish.
The wishes were also better back then, as you could wish for stuff that has been exiled from the graveyard by Psychatog. The Exile zone didn't exist back then, so all cards removed from the game were "outside the game", so legal targets for wishes and similar cards.
Psychatog was first played at Oregon State Championships 2001 by Cord Slatton. He got the deck from Chris Benafel the night before who in turn got the list from a guy in New Zealand via email. Cord did pretty well, can't remember if he went top 8, he had one loss in the Swiss rounds, I assume he did make top 8. the star of the Event was Jonan Scheffler's Battle of Wits Deck, though. Jonan was Cord's only loss using a 300+ card deck.
2 more variants you could had mentioned were Grow-a-Tog = Psychatog+Quirion Dryad and Frigorid, the original dredge deck with Atogs, Ichorids, Narcomoeba, Tolarian Winds, Breaktrough, Dredge Cards, and so on. Cool videos man, as always.
I remember when oddesy was released a buddy of mine who had multiple pro tour appearances at the time made a bu control deck that was using 4 shadowmage infiltrator. He only had 1 at the time so he used psychatog as a proxy and quickly realized that the tog was just better.
I’ve loved your deck revue’s so far. Could you add control and Donais Control to your votes in the future. It would be interesting to see their histories. Also mill or stasis (stay) would be interesting to view.
I'm not done with the video yet, but I wanted to comment that in the cunning wish version by the hump they also ran Nana short in the board and that made it hell LOL. Going back I hope you bring up the dryad version and the golf versoon
This was the deck I feared and respected back in college years. I lost many games against it, but managed to win some games w/ my zombies back in the day
Tog decks ruled vintage for a time as well. My friend used to pilot Hulk smash. Which was a tog deck before protean Hulk was printed. You would simply attack with a fat psycatog cunning wish for berserk and win.
I remember that assholetog... back in the day when there were very few spot removal cards that could outright destroy black creatures. Wild mongrel drove me nuts, too.
I notice Wingspan in the background during your new intros. Reaching here, but for April fool's day, would you be interested in doing a Wingspan card guide?
@@AsgneonthebesT Yes. My volume was at a comfortable level for the dozen or so videos I watched before that, for the twitch stream I watched earlier, for the game I was playing and the music I had been listening to previously, but I had to turn it way up for *this* video.

Sounds like some fun times =)

@@NizzahonMagic How did you realise it was the same Arby's?

Nizzahon. You’re insane! Doing the set release videos and releasing this one as well?! You could have waited with this my man. I appreciate though.
Haha well, as I noted in this video, I'm not doing a deck history NEXT week because of the set review, so I'm not TOO insane!

Odyssey was such a cool set, and the basic land arts were amazing
Love to hear another person who loved the Odyssey lands.
I didn't love Odyssey...I'm more of a Wrath Cycle, Urza's Block and Invasion Block fan.
The foil version of the mountain covered in snow is gorgeous.
I started playing in Odyssey, and blame Torment for the reason black is my favorite magic color.
I was expecting at some point the mention of the 2002 World Championship, when brazilian Carlos Romão won using UB Psychatog. Great video tho.
Me too, I had his gold bordered worlds deck back in the day. It was the first deck I played that really made me understand the complexity of the game.
Brazilians don’t get the credit they deserve in the Magic community.
There was a Psychatog deck in Odyssey block/7th edition/Onslaught block standard.

Atog is an anagram of goat, because they eat everything

Psychatog lives on in premodern!

I'm sure you get this a lot, but thank you for the content. I enjoy both of your channels. They leave me gruntled. :)
Thanks!
I hope the reprint psychatog and atogs in general in MH3. Modern psychatog would be interesting.
I’d love to see that too, but I think it would be another Hogaak Fiasco.
@@LosRockson I'd love to see it but it probably wouldn't see much play, murktide does the same job with more flexibility.
There’s way to much removal for psychatog to work in modern or legacy.
@@LosRockson no it wouldn't Psychatog costs 3 full mana. It'd be way too slow.
This aged extremely well
How do you do a video about Psychatog, and not mention Carlos Ramao winning worlds in 2002 with it?
Yeah, I've got the same reaction. Nizzahon has a few credits, but this is a major miss. Shame..

Are your blinds the kind you can just lift up, or do they need a drawstring?
So glad to see my first and favorite deck I have every played. I love Dr.Teeth!

Love catching these late at night

No love for vintage where you could cunning wish for berserk?
Bro, amazing vídeo, Very complete
Miss Odyssey Block dearly, even if I hiss every time I see an Upheaval.
Floating 3...
Well done!
I swear, if Psychatog were printed new today it's exile ability would probably also let you cast 1 of the exiled cards with it's effect until EOT.
great video! What about manaless ichorid?
I would probably just do Ichorid more generally, but it would include that.
Psychatog continus to be a premium win condition in my cube
I remember that assholetog... back in the day when there were very few spot removal cards that could outright destroy black creatures. Wild mongrel drove me nuts, too.
Kinda want to see a fish deck history. Might be interesting to see when the name fish does and doesn't count.
I notice Wingspan in the background during your new intros. Reaching here, but for April fool's day, would you be interested in doing a Wingspan card guide?
If I ever want to feel stupid I just try to predict which blue cards will become eternal playable. I am almost never right lol.
My uncle bought me the psychatog challenger tech from around 2002? Don't remember. I didn't appreciate it properly at the time.
Oh good old Dr teeth such power such terror
ty my fav deck!!
There was no psychatog on Legacy? I remember to read somewhere that it was the main reason to ban Gush there.
No that would be free card draw and doomsday def not atog
I was surprised to see no mention of vintage gro atog
I like to play Psychatog and then Glimpse the unthinkable myself lmao
They need to reprint this badboy
Currently is played in Premodern format ❤️
Can you do BW Vampires pls
I love your channel :)
Thank you so much!
Hmmm, a top ten Wish cards?
Already did it
Would Psychatog make a splash if it was ported into Historic?
all the Seize the Spoils type cards these days would probably make it strong.
@@Sauvenil probably we would see the return of the Psychatog decks mm....
What do you think is the best deck?

Morphoide decks please
I'm curious, how many points would Psychatog have?
It would be cool to have the points stats in these videos.
Flametongue kavuuuuu
Ty ty sliver atog... Ozolith?
Say hello tô Brazil

I think this video is older than premodern.
