- Hi Guys and Gals I know I said i would do another BMM engine as my next video but I decided I wanted to upload this one first. I have filmed the yellow Rheneas vid and will upload it soon.
So here we have TOMY Skarloey, he is a narrow gauge engine meaning he doesn't run on the same width of rails as the bigger engines in reality and in the Thomas world but this toy runs on the rails just fine :p He comes with his own two blue coaches who look suspiciously like a repainted annie and clarabel (as many of these TM and Tomy coaches are), this engine unscrews from the underneath of the front and has the flat type drive unit running on 1x AA battery. The detail is decent with printed details like stripes and nameplates etc, the cab doorways are stickers and these are the only stickers on the whole engine. The side rods are fake and do not move with the wheels turning like they would in other engines in this range, reality and in the tv show etc.
Performance on the track was good he runs quite quickly and has enough power to pull himself and a small train around at a reasonable pace, the drive unit did make a bit of noise though. so on track performance was great and as was the turntable with no problems at all on its first ever try. when I first put the battery in it did not want to start for whatever reason (seized solid from transit etc) but a couple of taps on the engine freed it up enough to start and it has not done it since.
So in conclusion a decent engine but nothing really spectacular about it (this is my first fake side rod engine of this type), it runs well and looks pretty good and the coaches are a nice bonus.
I give it a score of 7/10 it should have working siderods I know they have been making these for years now and to retool this engine would be costly for no gain for the manufacturer but its the consumer that suffers. I have avoided this engine for quite a while due to this fact but seeing as i have other engines with fake side rods (Hank, Murdoch etc) I thought it was time to buy him and see what he was about.

The first Trackmaster item/set I ever gotten is the Trackmaster HiT Skarloey at the Lumber Yard set. I still have it with me. Good memories. Also, I detailed my Skarloey by making it look like a railway series model. And also, I gave him moving traction rods.
Salty is a great looking loco and runs well, Harvey comes with that powered works coach which is nice and Skarloey comes with a lovely pair of blue coaches (plarail). Hard choice hey!

wow that is really cool i want to get a tomy plarail skarleoy too because it has two blue narrow gauge coaches also i am getting a tomy duck too on my vacation.😍😄😁😀
Good review! I own a HiT Toys Skarloey and i noticed that mines has a darker red coat of paint, while your TOMY one has a bright red color.
I think TOMY made Skarloey to resemble the Classic series (his paint was bright) and HiT Toys and F-P made their Skarloey to resemble the New/Animated series (he has now a darker color).
Skerloey is one of the fastest engines on my collection so far.
If you get 2 more of Skarloey's coaches & a breakvan. You can turn them into Agnes, Ruth, Lucy. Jemima and Beatrice from the Railway Series.
yes it is quite a light color red in person too, the camera under lights does a decent job of translating color to you guys.

Hi probably not a dedicated narrow gauge but more a branchline that I can use for smaller trains including the narrow gauge fleet.
Yes I still have everything that was mine and i reviewed except 2012 TM Diesel which I swapped to my dad for some vintage TOMY stuff.
I have plans to mod my old edward with 3 volts, I will make a video when I'm done :)
yes well third shell anyway hehe, its just a roller at the moment looks impressive the 3 of them together thats for sure.
You can use BoCo's blue caboose to make Beatrice, Skarloey's caboose from the coaches I said to you.

when i took him out of the box and he didn't start? well some engines have this happen as they travel a long way through the mail and get bumped/knocked or they have sat in a warehouse for a long time. who knows hehe.

Hey mate, did you know that Skarloey is based on a real loco counterpart named Talyllyn from the Talyllyn Railway
I used to have this one when I was younger and his drive unit thingy was beginning to malfunction as it was skipping on the unit
it all comes with practise, I am quite shaky sometimes lol
I only get plarail so it's hard to chose since plarail makes really awesome toys, I'm trying to make a choice. :[ It really hard to chose.
How'd you put more details on the trucks?
