I've been a residential carpenter my entire life and really enjoy it. I mean, I loved my job. Building is so fun to me, and I made a decent living at it. I got very impressed watching a woman frame this floating dock. You rock gal! I cannot frame houses anymore, due to being paralyzed, but I still build a lot of stuff. From decks to birdhouses, to muzzle loaders and muzzle loader accoutrements. Is not building just really fun and rewarding there gal?
I have built a dock and a couple rafts with 55 gallon plastic drums. I learned some things, the hard way. You want to seal the drums in the middle of your temperature difference. For MN sealing the drums at 30 degrees works good. The first dock sections I sealed the drums at warmer temperatures and in the winter they caved in some, so I drilled a small hole in one cap above the waterline, but somehow they still can fill with water. So seal in cooler temps. You can't have too much floatation. My first dock / raft had drums has 12sf per barrel, my last has near solid drums at 6.55sf per barrel. There is no such thing as too many drums.
This is the best video yet! That's exactly what I'll be doing for a fishing raft. Mine will be 4' X 8' for the same reason... Using dimensional lumber w/ minimal cutting. My deck will be marine plywood w/ outdoor carpeting.
Thanks so much for the video! We did this today for our (small, freshwater) pond and it's awesome. Me (handsome athletic stud) and my son (14 skinny disaffected) managed the whole project. We built the frame and dragged half of it into the pond, got the barrels in / under, and started laying decking down. Then pushed the rest into the pond and - with an extra barrel for flotation, got the other barrels in there. I HAVE NO IDEA how anyone could build this on the ground and then push it into the water without an army ... The lumber weighs a ton, but the $10 barrels we found online from a (literal) crackhead work like a champ ... My truck was riding Low-Low on the way home from the lumber store ... crazy. All said and done, once you have the materials, this is actually a 4 (four) hour project. Sooooo cool! We have many more "Pond-Days" in our future - many thanks!
Very nice! I found this video while searching how to build a small pontoon bridge. Same idea, just different dimensions. I almost have to do everything by myself, so have learned a little about moving heavy things. Having a few harbor freight dollies around, or temporarily addding wheels to the item, can be a back saver.
Nice job on the dock and keeping it simple and easy. One thing I’d suggest based off my dock experience is to rotate the barrels so the bung openings are parallel to the water to avoid any possible filling of them. I also used plumbers tape to seal the bungs. Huh huh yes I said bung. 😂
Awesome! Im glad you could use the information, I also couldn't find that anywhere so it was really just trial and error for me but its been three years and its holding up great!
Great pier! It can be used as a raft for a mini dredger to clean the lake from mud. To do this, you need a motor pump for dirty water and a suction nozzle Bagermaster
I built an 8x12 with 4 barrels under each side . very heavily built , but a trolling motor (hidden battery compartment below deck) would push it pretty well , even with 6 passengers . private lake , no registration required .
Important to use screws, not nails. As a youngster we built a diving platform. The wave action and stress of use by groups of us would cause nail heads to work their way above the surface. These cause quite a bit of injury to your wet feet, tearing holes in the bottoms. Having no screws back then we just hammered them back down again often and roughed it.
id of left a little gap between your deck boards just so the rain falls threw .and also uness it was womenized wood id of stained it or painted to look good and last thing id of put a bevel on all corners and edges of wood so when climbing on and off it ..no slivers or cuts on edges .no sharp edges . but over all good job .i made one with steel drums and used cable instead of rope and put connectors on inside of drums like you did ..good job .
If you swap the word "dock" for the word "raft" you'll have a more accurate description of what you just built. Great job. We had one when i eat a kid at a lake house in Michigan. A LONG time ago when the barrels were metal. Yes metal. We enjoyed that raft for years and years.
Hi! This video is great, thank you! I am looking to build a tiny dock just to put 2 chairs on to fish off. Could I get away with 4 barrels (2 on each side touching circle parts) or do you think I need a different floatation device? Also would it be compromised if I added rails?
Very nice and fun. Do you use treated timber? As I add up the costs of the materials its looking like a very expensive project. Here in Australia the cost of the project works out at around US$850+ .... hmmm.. probably best to salvage the materials as cheaply as possible.
A little late, but it's just water volume displacement. The weight of water the barrel will hold is the weight the barrel will support. A 2 foot by 3 foot barrel (Actually 23"x35") holds 14541 cubic inches of water. Convert that to 238 Liters makes it 238 Kg of displacement, or 523 Lbs. But that's fully submerged - you likely want to build your dock or platform so the barrels are less than half submerged. Two reasons for that - one, the little openings at the end of the barrel can remain above water most of the time. You'll seal them, but better to have them above water anyway. The second reason is that if your platform naturally floats with your barrel less than half under, as you step on it, the water line on the barrel is still getting wider as it sinks, meaning it won't dip as much as if you only had 1/4 of the barrel out of the water. So for every vertical inch it sinks, you're getting the maximum buoyancy support because the water line is at the widest part of the barrel. Sorry for mixed units, I'm Canadian so it's metric for everything important and inches for construction.

Thank you so much for an awesome DIY video. You make it look so easy. You’ve given me the inspiration to build a floating dock this weekend at my friend’s cottage following your exact plan except, I’m planning for 3 barrels on either side to a total of 6. I’m a little confused as to why you cut 2 of the joists at 117 inches to arrive at an exact square of 10’ x 10’ since the boards have a 2” thickness. Also, now that you’ve been enjoying your dock for some time, do you recommend any changes to your plan that I should incorporate? 🙏
I am so glad you got inspired! the reason I did that is because the 10 foot boards are 120 inches long and I wanted a perfect square(and not to have to cut the deck boards because the come at 120 inches also) so I had to subtract 3 inches (1.5 for each butt joint x 2) to account for and then when put against the other 120" joists they now are 120 in length (1.5 x 2), does that make sense? also we are finally getting some great weather here in Nova Scotia so I cant complain!
That’s exactly what I understood it to be but I calculated 4” (2” for each butt joint x 2) based on your list in the description. I just wanted to confirm if I got the reasoning right and you’ve answered my question. Thank you so much, Denika! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to all the queries. Keep making great videos. You rock!
would it be better to put the deck boards on after you've got it on the water? Or do you need to put the deck boards on first so as to keep the tops of the barrels low enough?

Hey! We just removed it from the water for the FIFTH summer in a row. Not a single board has moved. Each year the barrels are littered with barnacles so they dry up and fall off and I had to replace the string last year that held them in. Other than that. It’s perfect! I will do an update video this spring. We have added so much to the dock/deck
Excellent video. I am planning to copy your exact design. I subscribed to your channel because I am so impressed. 1st Question: Did you ever add water to your barrels for stabilization like I witnessed from other videos. 2nd Question: How did you decide how many barrels to use? 3rd Question: If you used 6 barrels instead of four would that have any benefits or cause problems?
i have read about adding water the barrells but i didnt yet. i might this summer becasue it was a bit tippy I just guessed on barrel amount haha from my research, 4 barrels is plenty so quite a large dock, . i cant see 6 making any difference at all, unless the dock was bigger.
Hey! I made a second video just and short and simple haha This one explains how to build a piece to attach to land. th-cam.com/video/xc53HJYRZwg/w-d-xo.html
@@dcwoodworks each 50 gallon barrel displaces about 400 pounds of water. Your dock's weight plus what/who ever is on it needs to be less than 400 times the number of barrels.
Nice DIY video , just a quick question. What the volume / capacity of the barrel used ? Maybe it’s mentions in one of the comments too, sorry didn’t scroll through all the comments
If you are concerned about moving the weight of the completed dock, I would have completed the build and then removed half or two-thirds of the decking, leaving enough to keep it square, drag it into the water and then reinstall the decking.
DC Woodworks - Is the dock difficult to remove from the water when storing for winter? I'm planning to make my own in a couple of months. Our house is on the Cuyahoga River and I'm excited to see how this works! Already have 6 barrels...now just need the wood!
We have had 7 people on here and it barely looses height above water, anymore people and it would just not fit us but probably still float. I completely under estimated how many can go on, it's impressive. The only time I found it was unbalanced is if one or two people are on a corner but even then it just tips slightly and might "sink" 6-8 inches so I would say it balances really well.
I'd prolbably have added another perling (brace) inside the 2'X4' spaces between the barrels. It's still probably 22", so it's fine. And was your hand as close to that saw blade as it looked? Geez that scared me! lol
No lol the angle makes it look closer. (I’m a trained carpenter) not just a diyer. Yes it could have had another support for sure but it’s been five years and hasn’t sagged a bit. We now have a 20 foot dock as well. It’s turned into quite the spot.

You could have put couple more on it to to give make it more stability on all four sides you did a good job 👍🤔 and only thing that's missing is a little ladder so you can climb up on when a person stands on it it shouldn't not dip that much in the water like it is that's why I say it put a couple more underneath to give it more stability it would be a lot better you have extra 👍🆒✅
Thankyou! Yes your right it would be much more stable with more barrels. I actually ended up building a longer one that attached to land. This allowed it to be a lot more stable. Here’s the link th-cam.com/video/xc53HJYRZwg/w-d-xo.html
Did your dad get you into building? There are some very successful women contractors in America. You would make a great one. It's so much better to work for yourself, not stuck indoors, and make so much more money than a regular 9 to 5 or office job too. You should consider becoming one because everybody cannot think like us, but you surely do. Builders picture things in their minds differently from normal people and you definitely have that trait. Keep up the good work, and always build safely and work smart, not hard!
Hey! no my dad did not, but both of my grandfathers were DIY-carpenters so I credit them. Yes i agree. I love working for myself! thanks. used your idea but instead i’m making an 8x8 ft dock with 4 barrels so it will move around less when people walk on it. and it was a bit cheaper lol
Logan Forman awesome I’m glad you found it helpful. We have 8 on here last year and it barely moved. Anymore and it would of just been uncomfortable but nothing to do with weight. The barrels can bare a LOT of weight
We’re actually on year three and it’s in great condition. It floats above the water because I didn’t put water in the barrels first. So it will last a while

They are tied mostly however you can get them in. In the part of the video I tied them, you'll see theres really no pattern.
I would of put one barrell in the middle but that is just me... great video.
Yeah, I probably would’ve put more barrels now if I built another one for sure
Hi, how has this dock held up over the years? Have the barrels pushed the top deck boards up?
One year later you can buy a decent house boat for the price of the wood in this dock
Literally LOL. so frustrating
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Helloooo!
here in Brazil it's already night, so good night !!!
I wonder what was the wood used in this project ?! thank you
Hey! I used pressure treated spruce!

My parents just bought a house with a large pond, can't wait to get out there and get it summer ready
Ouuu sounds like you’ll have a fun summer!!

hi. if you were going to build a 4 ft wide by 16' long dock, how would you place the barrels?
Hey, theres no right or wrong placement but I would say roughly every 3-4 feet
@@dcwoodworks thx!!
Do u need to build a staircase so people can climb onto the dock easily??
We just purchased a steel dock ladder and screwed it on.
Excellent video. I am planning to copy your exact design. I subscribed to your channel because I am so impressed.
1st Question: Did you ever add water to your barrels for stabilization like I witnessed from other videos.
2nd Question: How did you decide how many barrels to use?
3rd Question: If you used 6 barrels instead of four would that have any benefits or cause problems?
i have read about adding water the barrells but i didnt yet. i might this summer becasue it was a bit tippy
I just guessed on barrel amount haha from my research, 4 barrels is plenty so quite a large dock,
.
i cant see 6 making any difference at all, unless the dock was bigger.
And thanks so much for the sub!!
Hey! I made a second video just and short and simple haha
This one explains how to build a piece to attach to land.

Thats a good question! I honestly don't know. They are 3 feet high and about 24 in diameter if that helps
55 gallon
If you are concerned about moving the weight of the completed dock, I would have completed the build and then removed half or two-thirds of the decking, leaving enough to keep it square, drag it into the water and then reinstall the decking.
thats a great idea!
DC Woodworks - Is the dock difficult to remove from the water when storing for winter? I'm planning to make my own in a couple of months. Our house is on the Cuyahoga River and I'm excited to see how this works! Already have 6 barrels...now just need the wood!
Its definitely difficult! but with 3 - 4 people its no problem at all.
What's the max amount of people you have had on it? Does the weight have to be balanced on it or does it stay fairly level?
We have had 7 people on here and it barely looses height above water, anymore people and it would just not fit us but probably still float. I completely under estimated how many can go on, it's impressive.
The only time I found it was unbalanced is if one or two people are on a corner but even then it just tips slightly and might "sink" 6-8 inches so I would say it balances really well.
Can you use 2x6 instead of 2x8 to lessen the weight and cost?
yes for sure you could!

Seen one of them out in Louisiana while fishing.. It had a motor on it!! It was pretty cool lol
Caleb504 oh that would be so cool!
Aluminum Plumbers Tape foe the Barrel Ties Works great.
ahhh, good tip! thankyou!
Beautiful timber work and very creative. Png.
Thank you very much!
Which wood use this dock
Pressure treated lumber
Did your dad get you into building? There are some very successful women contractors in America. You would make a great one. It's so much better to work for yourself, not stuck indoors, and make so much more money than a regular 9 to 5 or office job too. You should consider becoming one because everybody cannot think like us, but you surely do. Builders picture things in their minds differently from normal people and you definitely have that trait. Keep up the good work, and always build safely and work smart, not hard!
Hey! no my dad did not, but both of my grandfathers were DIY-carpenters so I credit them.
Yes i agree. I love working for myself! I am filming the house I am flipping now and the series should be out the end of September. Have you subscribed to my channel yet? They will be posted here. HGTV is my dream job. crossing my fingers!!
@@dcwoodworks no but you have a new subscriber and good luck with everything. I know talent when I see it. I sure wish I could help with a flip if your ever around Southeastern NC!
Wow nice job! Your beautiful too
thanks! we have used it for a few years now
So nice DIY
thanks so much! have you checked out the rest of my channel?
Bad ass build! Great job
J D thanks! I appreciate that. I try to keep most of my videos straight up to the point. I get so irritated on youtube with a 6 minute intro lol
J D check out the rest of the videos. There’s one where I do an addition to this floating dock it’s pretty cool
Nice work sis
thanks so much!
Is this dock useful for sea?
It could definitely work!
Approximately how much did all of the wood cost for this dock?
it was under 400$ in Halifax Nova Scotia :)
Ok thank you for the info!
Excellent video - thank you.
Glad you liked it! I just uploaded my newest video. Its not a dock but its pretty cool!

It’s in the video! lots of people
Nice build!
Glad you think so!
Muito prático a montagem deste batelao achei o máximo
Wonderful !! Thank you very much dear. I'm really like this kind of videos.
I'm so glad! your welcome
@Tin creative # crazy DK 😍
Is four barrels enough? Would six make it less wobbly?
it probably would make it less wobbly but we haven't had any issues
Were the barrels already sealed and watertight? Or did you have to do anything to them to make them watertight?
Good question, They were already sealed!
Awesome, thank you. And good video. Will be building two of them soon
thanks. used your idea but instead i’m making an 8x8 ft dock with 4 barrels so it will move around less when people walk on it. and it was a bit cheaper lol
haha awesome!! glad I could help
Well done! The ice took my dock out this year so I'll be needing this. Where did you get your barrels?
oh no! I hope you were able to build something to replace it! I got my barrels from a local buy and sell. did you find any?
Ben and Em liked this video
awesome!! :)
the raft was cool
thanks! glad you liked it
@@dcwoodworks how are you
You make Cabin mini on sheet floating
that would be so cool!

Build in the water?
Definitely I thought about building the frame and then attaching the floor boards in the water
Brilliant idea.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job! What did all this cost you?
Thanks! it was only about 350 canadian have you check out the rest of the dock series?
th-cam.com/video/RtmmBUMjTGQ/w-d-xo.html
How many people could it hold roughly I am planning to build my own soon! Very helpful video👍🏻
Logan Forman awesome I’m glad you found it helpful. We have 8 on here last year and it barely moved. Anymore and it would of just been uncomfortable but nothing to do with weight. The barrels can bare a LOT of weight
Would be better with nice protection of paint, in one year the dock will be needing repairs, congratulatíons per service.
We’re actually on year three and it’s in great condition. It floats above the water because I didn’t put water in the barrels first. So it will last a while
Nice video well done in short time
Glad you enjoyed
How much money expanse for this
This cost me about 500 Canadian but that was a few years ago now.
@@dcwoodworks thanks for replay mam am from India in my rupees or cost 30000inr
