      If anyone is wanting to watch a campaign with a brutally honest Aussie bloke that goes off on ridiculous and hilarious tangents, check Legends channel out. His humour is an acquired taste, but bloody hilarious otherwise.

      Zombie1Boy you only demolish churches for the Eastern Roman Empire. Western you have to disband most of your armies and pull what left back to Italy. Build up Italy and then re expand into what you MAY have lost.

      Can't be a pagan empire when your units/buildings continue to use Chi-Rho symbols. I say stick with Latin Christianity but if you need to change to Paganism, I recommend "Religion Conversion" mod so you don't have to wait for it to be 35%.

    Love that you are playing with good decent mods.
    Too many lets players on youtube are sooooo afraid of using mods and therefor many lets plays just turn out being almost identical, despite a game having been out for months and having vanilla serious gameplay issues that have been fixed by mods or where mods have added incredible things that would make the game far more varied and interesting as a long lets play.
    Especially Total War games, they are good in vanilla but become great with mods.

    Great video, and that was a clutch battle at Savaria. I’m
    really excited about this series. I just finished a modded, legendary WRE
    campaign, and I can tell you, even with mods, it is impossible to hold
    everything. I left Britannia, Belgica, Lugdunensis, Maxima Sequorum,
    Tripolitania, Dalmatia, Pannonia, and most of Raetia to wither on the vine (I
    did not actually click the abandon button - I dismantled most the buildings and
    did not defend them). But I am admittedly not a beast at Total War, so you may
    be able to pull it off, especially with your corruption reduction mod. I did
    end up retaking most of the Empire, including the East. And for the record, I
    stayed Latin Christian :)

    Convert back to Greco-Roman paganism. Sanitation is more important for provincial growth near the endgame than public order.

      +Commander Biff YES DO THIS.

    • @Mallachor
      @Mallachor 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Commander Biff If you manage to hold on to much of your territory, and you hit the corruption cap, growth in your provinces is completely negligible. The level 2 aqueduct still gives +8 sanitation to each region. I had built level 4 aqueducts in every single province capital before I hit the final technology disable which allowed me to have infinite money. Latin Christianity also spreads itself, which is nice.

    • @Tanuvein
      @Tanuvein 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Commander Biff Very much this. Burning down all your churches at the beginning and rebuilding coliseums makes a few rough turns, but quickly turns around and starts really making your empire stronger. Though this is having started with a much more strained economy, so you may not benefit as much early on from burning down all the churches and freeing up their maintenance costs.

    I never understood why Ca thought it was a good idea to make the entire map basically a barren wasteland because of the change of climate feature,as Rome at that stage depended on massive food imports from the area around Egypt to survive. The answers they gave to try and defend it when it was pointed out of them in the forums made no sense whatsoever.

    Diplomacy is one of the greatest weapons in this campaign. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to try to pay off the North African tribes for peace/non-aggression/trade so you can stabilize the Southern border of the empire. Trying to get the Franks to join wars (i.e. with Saxons) may also be worthwhile. Port settlements in Britain can be defended by targeting the enemy's general with your garrison ship, as you did. Also, anyone you can Blitzkrieg (Caledonians, Ebdanians, Quadians) they can become useful puppets and join your wars. Good luck Heir! Never retreat, never surrender!

  • @leoneil316
    @leoneil316 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Weirdly I find West Rome easier than most of the barbarians. Sure you spend a while fighting hopeless garrison battles vs the rampaging hordes. But then they hit your inner perimeter and you start pushing back with good old roman overwhelming force!

  • @cruznunez9981
    @cruznunez9981 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think it would've been cool if in Total War Games, when you play as Egypt, the map is upside down. Egyptians considered north to be south and vice versa because they judged their directions on the direction the Nile River flowed.

    Christianity is mainly good for vanilla late-game due to not consuming precious food, but something-something masochism challenge. In battle of Savaria, you lost your army's Scout Equites (they were at half strength, so you decided to sacrifice them. Now you'll have to train a new one (requiring a dedicated recruitment building and precious time, or recruit mercenary mounted warband (better than SE, but not great). One thing you can do is use Limitanei Borderguards as meat shields to eat enemy cav YOLO, since they are fairly expendable and can be trained out of settlement buildings (basically, anywhere in your empire. Such basic infantry isn't great and you can't really expect them to gain or hold onto many chevrons, so such a practice is viable and feasible.
    Now that you are at war with the Caledonians, a risky but potentially valuable tactic would be to move your army out from Eboracum and fortify within reinforcement range, then recruit some spears. This will still allow them to replenish, but more importantly, they will act as a lightning rod for the Caledonian armies. You will still gain the benefits of walls and towers, as well as caltrops, sharp stones, and stakes, as well as reinforcements (especially the two units of cavalry free to move about and rear charge). In the unlikely event that the Caledonians bypass the army to lay siege to the city, you can muster mercenaries and attack them on the field, then have the garrison attack the enemy from behind.
    For the defense of Tingis against the Mauritanians, they are leading the attack with their navy (probably just an admiral, but that's a problem in and of itself), so you can't assassinate him with your marines. Either keep them in reserve to maul their reinforcing seaborne army, or land them immediately to join the garrison in the town center. The reinforcing general is cavalry, so he will appear from the edge of the map on land. Try to present spears as your first defenders (to stop cavalry and weather missiles in stationary testudo) and put your Cohors on the walls to their left (to get plumbata volleys into the enemy's unshielded flanks). If the AI YOLOs his cav general into your spears and dies, then your sagittarii can use a mix of flaming and whistling shot (the latter should be used by the depleted archers, since those shots do little to no damage) to dump a morale shock on the enemy levies. Hopefully your cohors can massacre the admiral enough to shatter him (no chance to kill him due to being ashore) with plumbata. If possible, allow the AI to blob against your testudo spears, and let it fire into the blob; (un)friendly fire should do a lot of the work for you. That way you can save your cavalry (and their precious javelins) for an epic charge to break the enemy, then task them to run down as much of the shattered units as possible. It's not exactly fun or glamorous, but it can save you a lot of grief in the future. One thing of note when resolving battles with purely garrison forces: since they are a garrison and do not have an integrity meter, they do not suffer from not having captives, and can freely ransom captives for a chunk of cash (which might be the difference you need for a construction or research project the following turn). Additionally, in my experience, there isn't an appreciable loss of chevrons from taking on warriors after a battle, compared to having to retrain them; you still lose some in retraining, and taking on warriors can render your armies combat-ready marginally faster. It is especially valuable if that one turn saved allows you to get that extra bit of utility from the army before winter snows (and attrition) sets in. If the battle goes poorly, you do have an army in north Africa which you can relocate as necessary (though the Garamantians might try to take advantage of their absence).
    Shieldwall for Palatina Guards and the Palatina-Protectores line of units came as of the Garamantia FLC patch, as did mobile testudo being a purely missile defense formation. The main advantage of Roman infantry is their tankiness, armor and block chance (especially with stationary testudo, which takes Limitanei block chance up to 90% iirc). By taking advantage of their durability (maximized by deep formations and holding choke points), you can bring deadly missile volleys (javs or heavy shot) into enemy flanks, or tie them down for a rear charge. As they almost universally have a poor charge, have them brace (especially if they have shieldwall) and hold their ground. If you are concerned about being flanked, try to anchor your line on impassible terrain (buildings, walls, cliffs, etc) and refuse the other flank.
    Your two armies in Belgica are partially retrained, one has an onager, but you can potentially concentrate both of them an wipe out the Suebians on this turn. For additional certainty, you can hire mercenaries just for the battle and use them up as frontline troops in the battle (saving your regulars for late-game or just from additional retraining. mercenary cav can also be used to YOLO vital units or tie down skirmishers).
    Sorry for the impromptu essay, but these were suggestions I thought might help.

      @georgewu4051 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brycen Chun well thought out and considerate essay, thought I should give you some credit since no one did, I would say the battle tactics is a bit too wishful thinking but it doesn't hurt plus the second episode did turn out similar to how you described it. LOL the Garamantian declared war even when the North African army was present so not possible to relocate now. I really like your caledonian tactics as well, if only the hadrian wall is an actual defendable wall in the game it would be awesome

    I’ve been playing as West rome on normal with the double garrisons and ammo refill mod. So far I’ve only lost control of 1 province and i have gained 1 because of a dozen clutch garrison battles helped by the double garrison size and the best ammo refill mod for middle United.. I simply maintain a zero tolerance policy with trespassing hordes or armies since fighting them is easier than dealing with them later. I surrounded and destroyed the suebians and have fought of the Ostrogoths and marcomans to a peace deal. I kept my army in Britain and have fought all 3 of the Celtic tribes I have killed the ebdanians and have occupied their capital that I know call dublin. I have defeated the scots but only barely and I’m now preparing to invade Scotland and to punish the hubs for raiding my Balkan territory. I’ve managed to deploy governors in key provinces to spread Christianity. I’ve had no rebellions in Iberia or Africa because of that though still my economy is struggling. Disease racks some of my provinces but my campaign is surprisingly easy so far.

    This is one issue. Thalmor probably will try to conquer Skyrim as soon as stormcloaks won but Dovahkiin will not allow elves to do that. Elven army will not fight only with Nords but with vampires, Werewolves and Dragons. After all Skyrim may decide to use Eye of Magnus to defend itself and that will be an end of Aldmeri Dominion. Use an Eye of Magnus as weapon of mass destruction on elven capital will broke elven morale. Invasion forces will have to fight day and night because vampires and Werewolves will attack after dusk. Elves will have to fight without supplies because Thefts guild whill rob theis supplies and Dark Brotherhood will eliminate smartest elven officers. That invazion will end catastrophe.

    Just a reminder that you can settle hordes you're not at war with in provinces to be more easily dealt with. I do that right off the bat with the Suebians since they're in a province I'm not unduly concerned about as is. It gives you +100 diplomatic standing with them, so they're less likely to be another pain to deal with.

    This will be a good challenge heir. This one campaign particularly is not easy legendary difficulty or not. One suggestion, research your initial melee unit upgrades. it will upgrade all your garrisons and it's for free. you probably won't be able to get the next one after that for some time.
    Also take non-aggression or peace agreements whenever you can.
    The last fight was very close. Losing fights will hurt in this difficulty if it is not planned.

    I played as the Eastern Empire and managed to conquer everything (other than 3 or 4 more small factions but it was only a matter of time so I ended it there) but this one is the real challenge. As the Eastern I just sorted the public order out in the East and moved all my western troop to Constantinople and built up the armies, and went on from there fighting battles in almost every turn until about turn 120. I've just started a Western campaign...

  • @Brendissimo1
    @Brendissimo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree that the removal of "legacy" tech as you advance in religious tech raises eyebrows, but I think there is an explanation. Basically this is an abstract way of modeling how many Roman technological innovations were lost during the Late Antiquity period, due to a number of reasons, including migration/invasions, and religious influence. It's a little odd that it's modeled through the Roman factions' tech trees... but that's CA for you - interesting idea, half-assed execution.

    Also, FYI, it saves before and after each battle as well. You can actually exploit it pretty bad. You can use an army besieging a settlement to save the game by clicking on the settlement, and the clicking "continue siege." It will save the game.

    I always thought that the logic behind turning off legacy techs was that, as time goes on, Christianity becomes more and more the center of Roman life. As it does so, things like classical theater (read: entertainment buildings), literature (read: libraries), etc come to be viewed as either unimportant, or even blasphemous, due to their focus on the pre-Christian Gods. Also, if we assume that there are iconoclastic sects burning down libraries, as there were historically, the knowledge of how to build advanced structures like aqueducts could be lost, or at least become much less common. It's still kinda dumb, but that's how I rationalized it.

    • @HeirofCarthage
      @HeirofCarthage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DefinitelyNotYakra Yea I just don't like it so I turned it off :)

    • @occasional_doomer
      @occasional_doomer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DefinitelyNotYakra That's a silly way to view early Christianity(and this is from someone who is not exactly a fan. Julian the Apostate is my Avatar after all). Roman Christians prized literacy and they still were educated classically(one of Julian's most damaging edicts was preventing Christians from using classical texts in their teachings). Christians played a large role in preserving much of what still have from the classical era(imperfect as the preservation was).
      When it comes to entertainment, it's true that gladiatorial combat fell out of favor, but chariot races were as popular as ever. Iconoclasm would not show up for almost till the 8th century btw.

    • @MisanthropicMarxist
      @MisanthropicMarxist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mataeus The Apostate
      Iconoclasm was the wrong term, but you know what I meant. There were sects of Christianity which did, indisputably, burn libraries, and this destruction of knowledge led to the massive technological regression of the Dark Ages. I wasn't saying that the entire religion was responsible, that's why I used the word "sects." Of course I recognize the role of Christian monasteries in preserving knowledge, but if we're going to give the monks credit for keeping some safe, we have to give the others blame for endangering it in the first place.

    • @occasional_doomer
      @occasional_doomer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      DefinitelyNotYakra
      I agree with most of that, but it does not at all justify the notion that a christian Rome would just stop building libraries or forget how to build aqueducts( I know you said it was still stupid).

    • @MisanthropicMarxist
      @MisanthropicMarxist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mataeus The Apostate
      I didn't mean that Christianity was directly responsible for the loss of engineering knowledge, only that the destruction and scattering of information, which some Christian sects were partially responsible for, caused this knowledge to become much less common. Like I said in my OP, this is just me trying to rationalize a weird design choice, which was probably just meant to make the Roman factions' more difficult to play as, and to make them less OP in the late game

      I think it's evened out by weaker towers: those things allowed completely illogical and impossible defensive wins.

    to be honest because Heir has turned on all these different mods it kind of makes judging which religion is better hard.
    To generalize, in Vanilla Rom-Pag is good for public order and sanitation but bad for food. (+2 sanitation default on every settlement which is NOT BAD at all, and also it doesn't disable the classical tech so public order and sanitation can be kept through forum chain and aqueduct). Christianity gives you the fifth tier church(which is cool I guess you can build something nobody else can build) but that's pretty much it (+1 default in religion spread is like, not much, so not really effective), while the normal city church and town church are expensive and their public order boost are not +15 public order like the amphitheaters)
    But then Heir turned on the corruption reduction mod so making money (which is not hard even in Vanilla) would be very easy,(which makes expensive churches bearable to maintain if you don't mind them being useless) and the mod makes the classical tech stays. Sanitation can still be kept pretty well as the classical tech still exist late game, but then food would be a whole different dynamic since heir have the fertility mod, which means even if turned Rom-pag later it may not drive food supplies down to the ditch.
    My point being, because of all the different mods, the game is essentially a whole new dynamic comparing to vanilla so without detailed analysis of say fertility effects it is very hard to clean cut say which is better.
    I myself support Christianity because only then you have a good enough reason to crusade everyone else. (I'm joking I can already see you getting worked up mate oh my god calm down)

    My biggest problem with Attila's campaign was always the implementation of the fertility system. I love the idea but what's the point of seasons and fertile lands when the optimal way to govern require all regions need to be self sufficient all year to avoid starvation and financial penalties. I think I would have preferred a system where the "breadbaskets" are essential in supplying the empire and not just an excuse to build different farms than in other regions :)

    I've played through and found it helpful to raze the Quadians, Alamans, Saxons and Franks. After the first few turns of nearly impossible port attacks in Britain, I abandoned Britain completely. The Suebi attacks early, but then the only threats come from some raiders, and big armies from modern day Romania. My biggest problem was constant public order issues. And always run down enemy units in Legendary.
    Hope some of this helps.

    Dealing with fertility drop is one of the major challenges of this game. It's ensures no matter how well developed your provinces are, you can never just factory mass produce armies even in the late game. It's also the thing that uproots the AI barbarians and push them to horde all over WRE territories. By mitigating fertility drop, you are already making the game easier.
    The other major challenge is corruption, and you nerfed that too. I don't even know why you bother playing on legendary....

    prepare for 50 turns of public order and squalor headaches, if the hordes aren't at war with you their your best and sometimes only source of troops. destroy any military docks as they add too much negatives and you won't need a fleet. pannoia will be were ALL THE HORDES come from and gets depressing unless you withdraw and hope a buffer state emerges that can a massive help, good luck it won't be fun

  • @Meade556

    I have to reload a lot on normal difficulty just to survive so certain people don't attack WRE at the 'wrong' time. Because otherwise the Empire implodes completely. And you have to be utterly ruthless about often letting rebellions either develop alot or letting certain regions go. Either way you either have to work extremely hard - this campaign is a labour that should only be undertaken for love of Rome - or prepare to lose some territories.

    Also you have that army in Spain you might want to bring it down to Gibraltar so it can help out in North West africa.
