- Today Jay and I have a very exciting project- we are building my gorgeous custom closet!! It is so wonderful to see all the little parts of my total house renovation coming together in such a beautiful way!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Just put clear varnish on them. Leave them natural.
Clear poly. All the way! It will match your scandi vibe and less maintenance in the long run. Jay is amazing, but give yourself credit. So are you! You know what you want, and you are able to translate that vision to Jay, and his expertise shines!
Jay is a genius in his construction and carpentry skills! He is also a phenomenal instructor/ mentor for you Abby. He has taught you so much and will be helpful for the rest of your life.
You will be moving into your gorgeous new home soon! I love how you put the drawers in, Jay is a gift from God! The hard work you, your family and great friends have resulted in a home for the rest of your life. Close enough to family and with your sister there, your fabulous friends will be a blessing on you.

YES - a couple of sets, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, they certainly won't go to waste and you have plenty of scraps to use, just need the brackets!
We knew Jay was good but his carpentry on the cubbies and closet is next level ❤❤❤ So custome and beautiful.
I'd do a clear poly and call it a day. I think the wood is pretty. GREAT CUSTOM JOB! You and Jay work so well together

It is all coming together! It’s hard to believe how far you have come! It’s like a brand new home! Jay definitely is a god sent! He is such a nice man and he works with you he doesn’t tell you what to do or how he wants it! He gets approval!

Hey Abby, I didn't realize how tall Trudy is 'til now when I saw you together next to that beautiful closet in your new bedroom !! She obviously gets her height from her father !! LOL !!
Very nice, I love a good closet divider system, makes so much more sense than just one single rod.
The only thing I would have done different - the 2 shelves on the left side; I would have lined them up horizontally with the shelf they're next to, in the middle section. It would visually be a straight line, instead of being a bit off as they are now.
Question - wouldn't it have been better to have the floor in the closet installed prior to the shelf unit? Seems it would have been easier than having to measure and cut around the unit.
Oh, how I need a Jay in my life! He is so talented, reliable, and trustworthy…traits that are getting harder and harder to find. Very nice closet!
Its going to be so cool that you can tell everyone how much you did in redoing the house!!! You work on every thing that put the house together!! You have your fingerprints on every part of the building!! How cool is that!!
I vote for polyeurethane. So much white is hard to keep clean! Dust shows less on wood. Enjoyed watching the process:)

I kind of like the wood tone in the closet. It's beautiful wood! Just a clear coat of polyurethane and your good!
Two double doors is great, but I think sliding doors that you can slide back-and-forth from one side to the other with mirrors on them is even better, therefore you can get stuff out of the closet that would normally be behind the double door when opened.
One thing I personally like is clear water based varnish (matt or gloss) so easy and makes a great protector of wood.

Clear finish urathane . Natural look, and they won't scuff up, never have to repaint.

Stain that beautiful wood. It will last longer and think of how beautiful against all the white! It is wonderful Abby!

If you are worried about not enough lighting you should get some strip lights and attach them to the inside of the frame.
WOW! Jay is a great carpenter/cabinet maker! Yet one more blessing!
If you put a track light fixture in the closet, you can slide lights to both sides of the closet and aim them right where they’ll be most effective.
I love the wood look but I like things painted white too. A suggestion- with modern water based paints - it's takes years for then to completely dry. You will put things on the shelves and they will stick. Then peel the paint when you move them. After painting put on a water based shellac or varnish. Won't change color and will be rock hard
I think the different levelled shelves in the closet look great...it follows the slope of the ceiling. Also, thank you for being a reasonable human being about closet space. I'm in multiple home building groups and everyone needs huge walk-in closets for some reason 🙄.

Keep the wood! It looks great - a work of art. White paint would be ho hum like a shelving unit you could buy anywhere! That's my vote. :)
Abby what about the ceiling lights I haven’t heard you say anything about those yet and I noticed that you didn’t have any covers for the plug ins yet and I don’t know how you would have gotten anything built without Jay he is a gem for sure with his knowledge of building
So Wonderful! Yes, you are right, How it functions is more important than the Visual affect. (Visuals) or Form, Follows Function.
Function always leads. Function is the most important thing. Function is an important concept in interior Design.
Abby, The huge cubby you said you would put suitcase in, how about drop a bar cloths hanging distance from the top in that cubby and you can have things there in the back like the suitcase you would just have to part the rack to pull them out? If it is an area that you don't want to access often then make it rotation for off season clothes.
It is such a lovely cosy home.

If you paint closet shelves might I suggest high gloss cabinet paint. Clothes and such slide better on it and it can be wiped down so easily. Love the closets😊

Natural wood color is a nice offset to the white. Gives the room a very warm feeling.😊
lol, please move the shovels that lean on the outside of the house, it drives my ocd husband crazy!!! Also the inside of the house is amazing from where it started!

Great job, Jay and Abby, on the closet! It's beautiful! Abby, you asked us what we think about painting the closet and I say no because it will wear in time and you'll have to paint it again and it might get sticky sometimes depending on moisture in the home. Instead, apply a thin wash coat of shellac and wipe it with 320 grit paper to get rid of fuzzies and make it nice and smooth to the touch. I think it will look nice against the painted wall and new flooring when you get it installed. Have a beautiful, blessed night. 🙏

Wonderful work ! Shelves look great. We can't see very well the quality of the wood, but i'd say with thorough sanding and a clear finish it'd look amazing and with more personality than white. I see other people made the same comments 👍
I don't know as I would paint it or not, imo, kind of like the look of the wood, congrats Abby and Jay for a job well done! Very nice!!
I vote white paint, just a step glossier than the wall paint. If you paint it white, then it becomes about the shapes and forms and the way the light and shadow plays across them, rather than being about the wood.
My 68 year old back is screaming for some saw horses.
