    🌈 Summary
Kevin is married to Darla but is not loyal to her and cheats on her with several other guys. His casual gay hook-ups engulf him in remorse and he occasionally buys Darla gifts and takes her out to dinners, just to lessen his guilt. But deep inside, Darla and Kevin both know that they aren't happy. Darla is well aware of the society they live in and knows about Kevin's sexuality. The couple lives in a homophobic country, Tunisia. She had married her best friend Kevin, just so she could protect him from the strict laws that adhered to honor killing for a person with homosexuality. They both had been ok as friends but they could never develop a romantic relationship in privacy. All they did was fake in front of their families about the love they had. Darla had a brother who was gay, Sam. She loved her brother and her best friend equally and had come up with a plan. She had been saving up recently to shift to the States with her brother and husband. Just so they can be accepted for who they are. But things will take a turn when Kevin comes home drunk one day and does not know that Sam is staying at their place for a few days. He gets in the same bed as Sam, who is sleeping. He realizes it in the morning when he is hugging Sam and they both wake up suddenly. Darla immediately steps in on them and starts crying. She tells Sam to get out of her house and that she does not want to ruin his life or her marriage. Kevin silently accepts it but realizes that he has started liking Sam. Every night, they secretly start hooking up, until one day Darla gets the news that the police had caught them in a motel. She goes to their and lies that Kevin is happily married to me and is not gay. She gets them out of jail but is very heart broken because she knows that it is the right time to part ways with Kevin. She gives Sam and Kevin two tickets and enough money to go to States. She herself stays back in Tunisia, saying that she wants a happy life for them together but she'd have to lose a brother and a husband. And she was willing to do it for them.

Do you think escaping from countries like Tunisia is a wiser option or would you rather agree on advocacy of gay rights there?

Before the Berlin Wall fell, many people in East Germany had applied for an emigration permit and they were kept waiting for an unknown duration or they were refused to leave arbitrarily. In 1989, they were amongst the first protesters, chanting: "Wir wollen raus!" (We want out), but not in a pleading tone, rather demanding fiercely. Soon later, there where others, shouting: "Wir bleiben hier!" (We're gonna stay), what was supposed to threaten the regime - and worked perfectly. In the end, those two movements combined took the the system apart like tongs. It takes both, and everyone should be able to choose.

You actually think you can make change, just leave and find a better place

It is essential to stay and improve where one is. Abandoning those who can't escape is participating in the oppression societies impose. It ultimately means all of the rest of us are also left in Ghettoes and isolated. It ultimately means that those of us living in free states are also limited to not being full citizens of the world.

I am sad for Darla that she had to sacrifice so much.

This was so sad and I feel like he should’ve told her about like his sexuality and tell her oh he was gay. Is it a keeping it a secret because if she’s your best friend from day one and she didn’t want you to get in trouble so that’s why I got married, she’s gonna be the one that you gotta tell your secret to your dark and darkest secrets. She should be like the first one to know your sexuality.

There are too many countries where being gay is a death sentence…. Literally! 😥. Darla’s amazing sacrifice saved the lives of her brother and ex-husband. I hope they settle in a country where they can live in peace.

Every country has rules. If Tunisia doesn’t tolerate and accept same relationship, then do be it. It’s their culture, their beliefs. Just respect it. Leaving Tunisia is the best option.

Its not their culture tho, they learned to hate homosexuality through the colonization either by European Christians or Muslim arabs, hate come from religion and not culture
