What's it like to own a Wire Fox Terrier?

  • This is Nigel: a Wire Fox Terrier that will not allow himself to be ignored. Nigel is a 15 month old bundle of energy and puts the "terror" in terrier. Since he insists on being at the center of the family, we did a family project to show exactly how he manages to do this. If you do not want energy and activity... you do not want a WFT.

Thanks for posting this. We just lost our 12 year old WFT two weeks ago and even tho we have tons of videos of him, I can’t bring myself to watch those right now. Watching yours has helped in a way.
Tyler was the most amazing, loving and sweet dog we’ve ever seen. RIP, sweet boy!

I'm glad to hear this video helped. It is just awful to lose a family member and although we all have to go through it, and although it is a shame that nature leaves a dog's lifespan far too short, those memories last forever. Sorry to hear about your loss!

Our fellow Bjarni (age 3) is exactly the same (there are videos on here to prove it). You don't adopt a WFT if you want a quiet life, and that's just how we like it. They are characters, first and foremost, unbelievably clever, energetic, endlessly curious, affectionate, silly, and keen observers of everything around them. A fully paid up member of the family is what he is.

SCHN4UZ3R Thank you for the reply! I was wondering how he was doing because I knew the video was a few years ago. When I watch that video I see that Foxie-tude every wire owner knows and loves. :-D Joie de vivre, so much mischief, so much fun and laughter!! Nigel is a very handsome boy and I’d LOVE to see more of him. Hope you will make an update. I never tire of WFT videos and photos! @SCHN4UZ3R  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Michaela! Nigel has grown a lot older than he was when that video was made. The kids that appear randomly on that video are growing up too. The kids may all look different now, but Nigel remains the same in every way. He is a complete character and he continues to make us laugh every day. Interesting note on the car rides. Nigel loves the car. He loves to go for rides and has a routine when we are on longer trips. He often looks for a shadow or a reflective water bottle - anything that he can study or agitate for fun. Thank you for sharing your comment.

I have a smooth coated fox terrier. She is eager to please. Wants to be with me at all times unless she is on the chase. Very jealous, I can't pet any other animal without her getting upset. She can't take the cold, even in the house she is under the blanket. Doesn't want to sleep by herself. Never destroyed anything as a puppy. Is a very good guard dog, never bit anyone but she makes strangers think she will. She sheds like horrible and rolling in cow poo is her favorite thing.

Nigel is getting up there in age now, going on 14. But he is still as feisty as he was in that video. He is still the quirky unique boy he has always been. Whenever we host guests, he scans the room and has an uncanny way of selecting the person that likes dogs the least, and proceeds to attempt to sit on their lap.

I've had 3 Fox Terriers over my lifetime. "Nigel" is an exact example of these "Lads." They are wonderful companions. Oh, and don't let him or her hear you getting out some cracker and cheese! He could be in the next room, sound asleep, but open a box or sleeve of crackers, cut a piece of cheese and the next thing you will see is the Fox sitting in front of you, moving closer to you and eventually whacking your leg with his nose to get your attention that he wants his share of the cracker and cheese.
Don't expect him or her to settle for sleeping in his bed in the day time when there are much more comfortable chairs, couches or beds available. He or she will find the most comfortable location and make it his own. The Foxes DESERVE their comforts!

Different dog breeds are known for the way they focus attention, hunt, etc. The Wire Fox Terrier is a "Sight Hunter." As can be seen from this video, this dog is always watching every movement. When they are lead on the leed, they are always looking around. Good example: I had a male and female fox. the female would sit on a patio chair, which allowed her to have an unobstructed view of my large back yard. She would gaze fixedly and intently, especially with her eyes wide open looking for any movement. Without any warning or sign, she burst from the chair at flank speed, through the screen door and pounced upon a snake and the male Fox. rushed out behind her. Smart dogs: each dog would attack the snake at the opposite end. Some of them were venomous, but none lived to tell the tale. Cold blooded snakes stamina are only good for about 2 or 3 minutes. She would see things that were literally impossible for a human to see. Loved those dogs!

Amen to the "energy" my Annie is 5 years old and acts like she just turned one, we play frisbee - HARD and we play ball, and we walk, play rings, and did I say we walk? They are very high energy, smart dogs that require an owner that will play, walk, teach them new things (and let me tell you, educate your WFT or they will find things to do on their own!. Wouldn't own any other dog. They are SMART, loyal, and easy to train. Grooming is easy, they rarely shed and are always wanting to see "what is that?"..

Awww I have a wire haired terrier too...... they are so smart honestly, very energetic, need lots and lots of cuddles, hunt rodents, have a strong personality. But mine kinda sheds which is weird but he was cross breed APPARENTLY with a poodle which I do not see so I have no idea wether they lied to us but honestly I don't care I love the little fella.

I like that you made a video showing the hyperactivity and some of the energy we have with out WFTs. I have two, they are a handful, but my mom was empty nesting and wanted a toddler. She got two. We love the breed, but never recommend it to anyone who isn't familiar. They are a very frequently abandoned breed because people don't understand their needs.

I grew up with a schnauzer and now Im thinking along the lines of Wire Fox or Lakeland. You have a great little guy there.
I love the low cam shots.

Great dogs and raised them with Airedales. I pity the snake that dares to slither through the back yard of the Wire Fox. These dogs are Sight Hunters. and don't miss much. They are always watching. Example: my son sat on the couch against the far right of the room; I sat to the far left of the room. Trixi my wire fox pushed a desk chair which was on wheels with her head to the opposite end of the room jumped on it and sat down intently watching both my son and myself without pause. When I move back to the country, both Airedales and Wire fox terriers our at the top of my list to purchase..

I agree. NOTHING is missed. Any squeak. Any flash of movement. It MUST be investigated.

Nigel seems really well behaved, compared to Alfie, our wire fox terrier!! Two years old and a nightmare ( don't get me started on his obsession with paper tissues!!) Alfie gets car sick, so we have some lovely stories about that. If only he would do that 'sticking your head out of the window-cute dog thang' we;d be laughing x

I love Lakeland terriers too. Life is just too short... there are so many breeds I know I would enjoy and just not enough time to have them all. I grew up with mini schnauzers but have since moved to Standard Schnauzers. Our other dog is a Standard Schnauzer and he has been a wonderful member of our family and a great "big brother" to Nigel. Standards are quite a bit bigger than minis, with a much more mellow personality.

SCHN4UZ3R im getting a wire fox terrier myself in a couple of days and would love to know how to strip and groom like that!

manda98xo Sorry... just saw this comment. I am no expert but I have a very good grooming document that I follow and I could look into getting you a link if you are interested. Stripping is much more time consuming but the colors stay much more vivid. The tools are important too as there are many different types of stripping tools. I primarily use two... one for general stripping and one for more detailed work on the face. These tools can be ordered on line.

SCHN4UZ3R scissor is absolutely forbidden if you want a good and healty fur and correct coloring..
The Pictures here www.boberg.nu/hundare.html are samples of Airedales and Wired Foxterriers with good colors..
Samples of dogs with good fur can also be seen here. 35-års jubileum strävhåriga foxterrierklubben Sorry about the Swedish text but the video describes some activities during the Swedish "Wired Foxterrier club" (Strävhåriga Foxterrierklubben) 35:th aniversary this summer.
We have selected october 19 as an national activity day to promote our race. Total number of Wired Foxterriers in Sweden december 31, 2013 was 635 and we want that to increase. Perhaps the day can be an international.

I just fell in love with Nigel. So cute and smart. I have a WFT puppy that's 10 weeks and extremely cute :) He has very nice coat. Watching this video made me worry about keeping my Motza's coat as nice as Nigel's. I would like to ask if you take him to the groomer or do his grooming at home? I don't know if I should buy a grooming tool to remove her undercoat as home regularly (or if it's bad for their coat). Does anyone know about this? I haven't able to find much useful information online :(

Das mir der Hund das liebste sei, sagst du o Mensch sei Sünde. Der Hund blieb mir im Sturme treu, der Mensch nicht mal im Winde.......My WFT Kalle is undoubtedly my best friend.
