- Here some action of the legendary rhythm section STEVE GADD and TONY LEVIN. later on they went to play with Paul Simon, but this is really very early footage! The nice thing is that Tony Williams played with Stan Getz after this concert on the same drumkit!

Tony Levin with hair! This is rare footage!!

Some hair at least. Obviously bald at a young age. Levin was displaying extreme chops here which he rarely does anymore.
And the classic Gadd 'fro, and bandmembers with flared trousers! Very early 70's indeed. Definitely the most hair I've seen on Levin so far, I'm a bald chap myself.

What's interesting about this is how Tony Levin's musical aesthetic changed as much as his tonsorial sensibility.

I am really tripping out on how, not only have I never heard THIS tony levin, but I never had a clue that he ever EXISTED(!). I am flabbergasted & itchy as all get-out to hear bunches more....

@@BobSacamano666 At one time, Tony had to be able to drastically alter his appearance so as not to be recognized by the people he owed money to, but this gig checks out identity-wise, as Herr Levin (see what I did there: "Hair" Levin!) was a known associate of Mr Mangione's & Mr Gadd's, in the dodgy, dicey, dubious enterprise known as "groovy jazz improvisation".

My God it’s simply impossible to recognize Levin. As far as I’m concerned he holds that 80’s look since he was born.
I saw him with his current look back in 1978, on Peter Gabriel’s first post-Genesis North American tour. I just assumed Tony was always completely bald with a bushy ‘stache.
Wow! Early Tony Levin! Almost can't recognize him. But it shows that he has paid his dues and earned his rock-solid chops.
When he still had his day job in accounting?
I only recognised him by his moving and bass playing... hahaha!

The Chuck Mangione Quartet. They played at my High School in 1971, with a different bass player, however.

@@troubleondemand7703 Levin also played on Mangione's first album, "Friends and Love", with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He's pictured in the gatefold with that hair and a full beard, ha.

Those guys were all at the Eastman School of Music together in the late-1960s. They played in a lot of different school ensembles. Tony was usually playing the acoustic bass. I used to have an old yearbook with photos of Tony Levin and Steve Gadd. I don't remember Chuck in it, but he was around.
After this, Levin went on to play for Buddy Rich!

This is the same year at Montreaux as the famous Rahsaan Roland Kirk 1 man twins show. You can tell. It looks exactly the same.

Tony is so more personnal now...hum not really now, since 40 years ( So/Peter Gabriel a good example ) . He plays now less notes but better choice in theses.
