Pretty sure it's because he has latent feelings for Holden is the reason he agrees to it. They make hints to it throughout the entire movie. It's also the reason he's so jealous of Alyssa.
That’s exactly it, Banky projects a lot of homophobia but you get slight hints through the movie that he has feelings towards Holden. In Strikes Back, Banky and Hooper are talking and Hooper also alludes to them being a thing but not sure if it’s canon to the series.

BXBeastBoy In a threesome, yes, but like Silent Bob said in his story, Amy didn’t want anything like that anymore, she wanted someone like Bob. Sad they cut Alyssa’s reason for refusing out. When she mentions that it might hurt Holden that she moaned more with Banky I remember thinking that was kind of beautiful writing. This scene just really feels maturely written in a way I admire, and I’m a little disappointed this clip doesn’t feature those moments.
@Paulo Hernanndizz I feel so bad for Holden. He lost Banky as a friend and Alyssa left him. His life had more deception than others in romantic Dramedies like Sideways with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church and The Break-Up with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston
I love how this movie goes against the typical "romantic comedy" plot devise where it all works out in the end. Instead, Holden suggests the dumbest f***ing idea ever and it ends up driving the three of them even further apart. That's the brilliance of Kevin Smith!
@@jaredruff9823 It's obvious he just wanted Holden to get his sanity back but wasn't into it. He's a pretty good friend, overbearing and general dicjhead sure, but he cares about Holden
I wouldn't call the act of having a 3sum with his two closest people in the world stupid. More like naive. Imagine if Alyssa would have said yes? When everyone is sad and angst ridden, how do you even start sex? Holden be like: "Yes! Ok!... hmm... So Alyssa I know you're in tears right now... But this therapy sex is happening ... So I'm gonna pull out my dick... Banky can cuddle with it while you watch... and then we go from there...?" I mean... this scene could only end one way and that's with a big fat NO from Alyssa. If only Holden would have been a bit more patient, their relationship might have evolved into what he needed, but in this contrived way it would never happen.
This scene was done very well. Holden, as well intentioned as he was, was too caught up in what he thought would make everyone happy but himself. He felt the need to live up to something he was not and was ready to go through the taboo of losing himself and possibly more. His friend, willing to go through with it. Alyssa knew better and was much more experienced. With her lines, she broke her heart again by telling Holden all that would happen because she's been through it all. But what broke her heart in half was, "And it just really hurts that you would want to share me with anyone." She taught us all with that line what the wisdom of her promiscuous past led her to when she fell in love with Holden. What we can learn from this scene is that no matter where we are in life, and how we lived it. When you find true love, love that transcends gender, history, social norms. Love that connects only 2 people, to be in the present. Because if we let the chains of the past keep us from accepting the present, our future will have us "Chasing Amy."
Then Alyssa goes on a whole rant about every possible outcome that would come out of that ridiculous suggestion. And none of them were gonna be good for anyone. Holden did NOT think that through.
This is probably one of the two times in the movie where Alyssa and Banky are on the same wavelength and share the same thought and that thought is “is this idiot really suggesting what I think he’s suggesting?”
The continuation of this scene is almost shakespearian, with each line delivered in the way of a theatre play. The dialog becomes heavily scripted, almost poetic, and while that kinda yanks you out of the movie, it brings a different feel to the scene. Only people who have truly been in love with someone's body and soul, and hurt by that person can fully understand how beautiful this is.

I know that was a stupid proposal and what Alyssa told Holden of what the outcomes would be, but I understand how Holden feels. He tried his best to fix things up. I know he only made them worse, but still.

This is a great movie because it pushes past WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY beyond where most romantic comedies go.
