Hello, I'm the author of the Homing Pigeon mod for ARK: Survival Evolved, thank you for your review!
I just wanted to add some clarifications to some things you mentioned in your video to provide more context:
The DLCs and mods listed on the Steam Workshop page as compatible with Homing Pigeon are simply the mods I have personally tested and verified as working. Other mods may be compatible, I just haven't had the time to personally test them myself. The community is welcome to test and provide me with information on whether another mod is compatible, and I can then add said mod to this list.
You are correct that the flyer will fly up to way points en route to a destination just below the ceiling bounds, and as you pointed out this is to keep the flyer safe from threats (such as turrets and other dinos), and to mitigate collision avoidance. Determining where the ceiling is on the map follows two methods: First it will attempt to dynamically find the ceiling using a ray cast, this is to maximise the compatibility of the mod with as many maps as possible. In the case of some maps where this is not possible (for instance, the map author has used a non-standard means of implementing the ceiling), it falls back to a manual method where the altitude is hard-coded by myself for that map.
The mod does in fact have a collision avoidance system built in, though results can vary when dealing with complex geometry. Essentially when a flyer is en route, a ray cast is fired out from its forward vector to approximately 10m in front of it. If that ray cast registers a hit with a collision mesh, a force is applied to the flyer in the opposite direction in an attempt to steer it around the obstacle. This works well with simple geometries, such as walls, but struggles with more complex geometries such as some terrains.
Ideally I would love to avoid having to send the flyer to a high altitude, because as you pointed out it can take a long time for a simple journey - but unfortunately ARK does not implement any sort of A* path finding system, such as Unreal's NavMesh for me to hook into. So this is the best compromise for now.
The behaviour you observed when attempting to send a flyer that is very close to a destination is a bug that I haven't yet been able to track down. It's possible that it's a bad interaction between the waypoint system and the collision avoidance system, or it may be as a result of the flyer's turning radius. Rest assured it is something I am looking into.
You are correct that the flyer doesn't sprint while en route, and so it will travel at its base movement speed. This is because a player controller is required to activate sprint - which in the context of Homing Pigeon doesn't exist. I may consider adding a buff to slightly increase the movement speed in the future, but this does come with some other implications I will need to consider, as an increase in velocity may impair the flyer's turning radius and therefore it's ability to navigate to the destination successfully. I also want the mod to have an air of realism about it, it's a design decision to have the flyer actually fly rather than teleport, so any changes to movement speed will also need to consider the impact this may have on the overall feel of the mod.
One thing your video didn't cover was Public Homing Pigeon Flags. This craftable works in the same way as regular flags with three exceptions: They can only be spawned in by admins (via cheatcodes), they are indestructible to players, and any tribe can send their flyers to a public flag. The intention of this type of flag is to allow server admins to place them in high-traffic areas (such as popular resource gathering spots) for public use.
Once again, thanks for the review. Your video was very informative. Keep up the good work!

We had a lot of fun using this mod on a server where we were all in the same tribe but spread all over the place. Can't say how many times a flyer was saved when one of us died. Delivering things or even sharing birds between each other was also much easier. Metal runs are also easy if you take a number of birds and send them all full back to base without having to make them follow. One thing you want to watch out for, place the flag or mailbox on a flat roof or away from the walls of your base. Sloped roofs and walls that are too close can cause issues when the flyers land. Awesome review Harv!

its perfect for just that. Whenever a tribe is spread out

Nice mod. I can think of a lot of situations that would be handy. We have bases on opposite sides of the map and countless times we needed to transport flyers on follow or supplies back and forth. Saves a lot of time.

I highly recommend this mod because when I had to do a resource run I would pokeball 2-5 Argys and fly on a Griffon to the nods. Harvest till I’m encumbered, move mats to Argy, once Argy is 80% filled, send to flag. Then rinse and repeat. Griffon was my bodyguard. 😆

that part is a bummer. Maybe PIN code it? I didn't try that

Hello, I am the author of Homing Pigeon mod. The feature request for public mailbox configuration is in my public developer backlog and is scheduled for work (see trello.com/c/c8yHS7C1).
I will be adding this feature in the future, I simply just haven't had time to work on it. Your patience is appreciated. Thank you for supporting the mod.

@@HarvsCorner Maybe not giant, because it could be killed easily, but maybe a small pigeon, that is really fast, but really fragile

@@HarvsCorner A pigeon the size of a argy would be hilaroius, but i was thinking a big pigeon would be a easy target for enemies, so instead make a small and fast bird, that is hard to hit but really fragile. Another thing could be, if you have a warmap, you can draw a route the pigeon can fly, so that it awoids dangerous areas
