FAQ: Why Was 440Hz Chosen As Concert Reference Pitch?

- This is a pretty interesting FAQ on why 440hz was chosen. Turns out that we don’t really know why. It’s an arbitrary frequency, but my investigation delves into the crusades, Nazis, and an instrument manufacturer “arms race”.

440 will give the same cymatic pattern with a slightly larger bowl of water.
Real wood based woodwind instruments tend to go out of tune with themselves with age. Oiling wood clarinets and flutes is standard practice to prevent splitting.

I don't think it was a theory, they actually came up with it.
so if 440 hz is A, what is 432 hz?
Well if you tune with 440hz as a reference, then 432 is nothing to us using the standard 12 note chromatic scale. It would fall in between A(440hz) and Ab(415hz), but everything is relative. What people end up doing is using 432 as their reference note in place of 440hz. 432Hz then "becomes" your A and the frequencies of all of the other chromatic notes get shifted to keep the intervallic relationships the same.
