Down in the Hole - The Streets of Baltimore

  • Chaos erupts in Baltimore, MD as another black man dies in police custody. Freddie Gray,25 was illegally arrested by the Baltimore Police over possession of a knife and thrown into the back of a police van. Within 30 minutes paramedics are summoned to take Gray's motionless body out of the police van where he emerged with three fractured vertebrae, injuries to his voice box and his spine severed 80% from his neck. Gray dies a few days later. Spontaneous protests start and things quickly turn violent. Police are injured, and vehicles and buildings are set ablaze. A state of emergency is declared in the city limits of Baltimore. Curfews are put in place, and the national guard is sent out.
Narrated by Baltimore's Tyree Moorehead, 'Down in The Hole' gives the actual residents of Baltimore a clear, unbiased, and unfiltered voice. This documentary is shot during the civil unrest so emotions are raw and the residents of Baltimore speak their minds. The documentary uncovers how the civil unrest took place against a historical backdrop of deep racial and poverty issues which have existed in Baltimore for generations. Though coined as 'outbursts of a few "Thugs" ' truth is the death of Freddie Gray was just the breaking point in a city whose residents were victims of redlining, the crack epidemic, mass incarceration, the decline of industrial jobs, and bad government policy.
In an attempt to bring peace to a crumbling community, Tyree Moorehead calls on opposing gangs to bring peace. Agreements are made and a 'No Shoot Zone' is created. Freddie Gray's death is deemed a homicide and the 6 officers responsible are charged with his death. Curfews are lifted and life goes back to what it was before the death of Freddie Gray. Without massive systemic, the question still stands, How many more must die before we make a change ?

My hand hurts every day since 2004 from being put in the paddy wagon with no seat belt, cuffs not double locked and the driver driving through every rough, cobble stone road through east Baltimore to central bookings. I've been robbed, beaten, rights violated more than a few times in Baltimore city. Cops that are so corrupted. How would you like it if your pulled over for no reason, beaten, robbed and your girlfriend forced to blow 3 different cops. No one listens and this doesn't just happen to African Americans, it has nothing to do with color of skin.

I think the communities in Baltimore need to stand up against all the crime, killing, and drug dealing. Take pride in your so called "hood" clean the block, love each other, and help each other out. You, the people caused this not the cops. Go to community meetings, get some organizations in place to educate the youth, give them legal jobs if not, make some damn jobs. Look at the Baltimore squeegee kids, the kids selling water, and ones doing yard work. When people take pride in their community and the "bad guys" know it the block becomes healthy again

But when I came back I see why they call it Harm City. Damn I am so thankful that I didn’t raise my son here. Find that C and put it back so we can be Charm City again. There's a problem in the Baltimore Police no doubt about it but we all need to be realistic and understand that there is also a problem in the black community I feel like the first step to solving the problem with the police is for more black people to become police officers. all these people out there in the streets how many of them actually went and applied to become a police officer to change the system from the inside? As far as problems in the black community I personally feel like people need to be more of a parent and less of a friend to their child and less tolerant of crime in the neighborhood
