Just finished this book, it was SO good. This dude is such a gifted writer - his prose is incredible, particularly the final section - but the way this story unfolds is a work of art. Could have told this story in a very linear way but he used such a cool technique to let the threads unravel. Awesome, awesome stuff
Trust is a rare and incredible piece of work. It's genuine genius. I rarely read modern fiction because it's so disappointing so often, and this one literally blew me away, in the best possible way.
Hernan held his own against Seth, who's totally loosened up since the pandemic and is almost 2003 Conan-bonkers at times (almost!) and Hernan totally plays off it. So fun!
So happy Seth features novelists. I hope he has Nghi Vo on the show. Her new book “Siren Queen” is out on May 10th. I am such a fan of her debut novel “The Chosen and the Beautiful.”
Cool title, Siren Queen, so I looked it up real fast and was surprised to see book formula No. 1. I see it everywhere now. That font is just overused. What a shame. Has nothing to do with the book inside, of course.
I'm a pencil guy myself. I moved to Germany nine years ago, but I still have sixteen Dixon Ticonderogas that I haven't used up yet. Partly because when I got here I discovered the Faber-Castell Grip, which is not just a pencil, it's a high tech writing implement! Triangular cross-section! Black eraser! Over 10 centimeters of tiny rubberized grip dots! Mein Gott, what's not to love?
I could read your pencil descriptions all day! I love my Lamy safari pencil to match my Lamy fountain pen. The triangular grip of the Safari series fits my hand perfectly.
I love when you interview authors! Go Seth! Also, a recommendation for author interview: Oliver Burkeman "Four Thousand Weeks - Time Management for Mortals".
he might be familiar with ayn rand's atlas shrugged...though diaz book is not siding on socialism or capitalism but showing different political/social isms of the time... a good read
my guess is that it's a Meisterstück Fountain Pen. There are almost infinite editions of that Montblanc, but his black & gold version would be anywhere from $600-1200...maybe more if it's a limited edition from 20 years ago.
Man is a genius. This book left me in awe
So glad that Seth is doing his part to spotlight great writing. Carries in the line of previous greats like Dick Cavett. 😀🙏👍
I feel the same. Props Seth.
More authors please!
@HoneySiegalSurvivor i´m reading the book, it´s great!

such an amazing book, told in such a unique way, deserving of all the accolades and praise. read it!
We need him back to update us on the pen periodically.
@HoneySiegalSurvivor ????
I wonder if he has those thin markers that actually erase that type of ink...that´s what we used in Europe a few years ago.
I just met him at an event at SUNY Purchase, and he showed us the pen!!
Hernan is delightful!

Just finished the book. Stunning work of art. Thank you, Seth, for having Hernan on and helping me to understand a little bit the depth of this novel.
esoteric, abstruse, arcane, great words
I loved his book “In the Distance,” so this is definitely on my list.
I just finished that! Absolutely loved it. Bought Trust right after and looking forward to it.I'm a couple yrs behind lol.
Such a great interview. Seth’s book recommendations are always amazing. I will definitely be borrowing from my library.

I am reading this now and was interested in the author. I am glad I found this interview. The book is fantastic.
Very much looking forward to reading Trust, I just finished his debut western, In The Distance. And man I was blown away by how great the book was!
This was a fun interview ☺️
OK hey representative of r/fountainpens here, can we have a little more of the pen based conversation??
Here! here! I say, more pen based conversation is not only requested but required. To action you stylophiles! Huzzah!
But what pen is it?? Also come on surely bottled ink would be more efficient than international short catridges!
I’m just getting into his book, glad u had him as a guest. Thanks.
Nice interview with Diaz ! Loved to know he still writes with his twenty year old pen !
I think the Seinfeld aspect was not fully explored for comedic possibilities, the guy had a pretty good Seinfeld impression.
Congrats! Trust is one of the double winners of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize.
This is going to be winning all the awards. Brilliant meta-fiction.
This comment aged well

Amazing writer .I enjoyed the interview a lot.Julio retired teacher Argentina
Hernan Diaz has the same voice inflection as Officer Rhodes in Bridesmaids. 6:09- "it's a really good pen."
Great interview!
Pls make yourself a favor and read this book.
“Gripping stuff”, great pun.

@@amijacks that's a 144.
It's a Cross.
@@ThomasSarantos no. The Montblanc logo (white star) is visible on the cap top.
Close your eyes, don't you hear Mike Birbiglia? Kinda?
You're reminding me of Trixie Mattel a little bit
He's handsome
Wait, so how much is that f***ing pen!??
