A little backstory: but first, remember to hit that like button!
ok, so we have been spending the last 5 years using our 1875 map to go up and down the streets of yankton. there arent a ton of places left that we havent dug/been rejected from. And this was one of the few places left, but the backyard was fully covered by a garage. so Tom talked to this guy and he said he was fine tearing the garage down, but he wanted to keep the cement slab. so we offered to pay for a new one, if he let us tear out the old one. so we pay the guy, and then he says he will tear it down. we come back back about 2 months later and we probe the spot.. and we didnt hit anything... but there was a small slab of cement that was a walkway leading into the garage... so he agrees to let us tear that out, and sure enough.. there it was.. but obviously we dig the pit..... and yeah, it CLEARLY didnt work out.. as you may have noticed, we never really mention value on the channel, mostlt because the market is always changing, and there really isnt any set price on anything... but obviously there are no market conditions where what we found would make up for what we spent... but there is some good news! we got done with the dig, and we ended up running into another guy in town who lets us dig his yard.. and we ended up finding probably the best thing that we have ever found (on camera anyways) so it wasnt all bad.... and that video will be out in the next few weeks (available now on patreon!)

I hit the thumb up before watching usually. Sometimes I forget at the beginning, but I always hit it. As far as not hitting paydirt on this dig, I hope you'll make up for the loss through donations from history fans. Certainly the historic value is priceless. Having it documented on video is beyond priceless. As for the unusual number of medicine bottles, I wonder if some of it might have been preventative. Without knowing the contents it's impossible to say, but my mom said that every Saturday night the entire household of 8 kids had to line up for cod liver oil. If one of the kids had been irritable that week, that kid got castor oil as well. Grandma and Grandpa believed that irritability was caused by constipation. Grandpa was born in 1913, Grandma in 1920, and they added to the family from 1936 to 1952. So they would have kept some of the same medicinal practices as the household you excavated here, only slightly updated. Edited to add that yes, Grandma was only 15 when they married, not uncommon in those days, even when you didn't "have to" get married.

where i grew up as a kid in England the farmers fields were built on top of a victorian dump.. Every time the field was ploughed i could just walk over them and find hundreds of clay pipes and pottery of all types. The area also used to be underwater millions of years ago so there are were fossils as well.

I know where our Victorian village dump was….but I can’t be bothered to explore it….my dear departed mum told me where it was (because you wouldnt know where it is today) my mum was born in 1923..

I grew up doing this kind of bottle finding and never have I ever seen such easy non packed dirt to move that you have.

Yes!!! Or, as I have been whining about, wipe the embossed and interesting bottles better with your hands. Once we see 1 or 2 tool topped slicks meds or ketchups, you could just mention them rather than showing each one. Until next time....thank you for sharing your hard work and expertise!!
Ya know Tom, you never cease to amaze me with your ability to successfully probe for these pits and so casually dig with such conviction. Then there's your seemingly bottomless knowledge of these bottles. How did you come to all this knowledge?
Hearing Tom say “I don’t think I’ve ever run across one of these before” is really mind blowing when you think of all of the digs he’s done and all of the things he’s see over the years. Truly amazes me every time I hear him say it!

I like watching this channel because it reminds me of being a kid and searching for bottles at an old garbage dump in the Arizona desert. By the time we got there, all the rest of the garbage (food, paper, metal) had deteriorated so the only thing left was bottles. One of the cool things were the bottles that had gotten so hot after years in the Arizona sun that they had partially melted.
We brought boxes of bottles home but I don't know what happened to them.

I AM 65 so even in the sixties we had no indoor bathrooms so every year we would dig a new pit and move the outhouse over the new pit. i remember it had to be 8 ft deep min and 4 x 5 ft . the new pits dirt would be used to top off old pit and you had to be 5 ft from the old pit for stability . we had six people in the family so a pit would only last a year

It always blows my mind that my father was born in 1919 when so many of these styles were current. I've seen pictures of his family when he was a baby and I can't wrap my head around the fact that I am just one generation away from that.

Not much room on the lot for multiple pits, they would have been cleaned out by a service when it got full or periodically. Most of the pits in town probably date back to when sewers were finally constructed, seemingly in the 1910’s, since most pits from this town have contents from the same era.

Great channel and content! It is very relaxing to sit back and see what you find! Thank you for sharing some of your tricks of the trade in different videos. I live in a neighborhood that was settled by the Ebenezers back in 1860-70. There are a few old farm houses in the neighborhood that were original when the area was settled. One is owned by a friend of mine and it is tempting to see what is around in the neighborhood. I did find a 2 cent piece in my back yard while digging for a garden fence last year. It is from the late 1860's - early 1870's. Thanks for sharing what you find! My wife and I really enjoy it!

Finding the tops in the bottles is amazing, nothing like the glass/porcelain stoppers in place. Thank you for pic of pitcher, beautiful. I laughed at the label for Blatz beer, an angry Mrs is unusual 😂 I think the yawning man is a singing choir boy lol. I grew up in a late 1800s town, it is Oakland, Oregon. My grandfather, who was mayor for a while, told us where the "dump" used to be near the creek. My father and brother dug up some old bottles there. I would love to see you dig some privys here! Let me know if you decide to visit. ❤

Being that human beings have always loved breaking glass to see bottles that old is pretty amazing especially that many and one spot.
That porcelain figurine/boy at 11:21 was potentially a pie vent. When placed in the middle of a pie during baking, it supported the center of the crust and prevented the crust from getting soggy. Many of these old pie vents have the hole/vent positioned in a persons or animals mouth. I bet, if he cleaned up the pie boy, it'd be hollow where the mouth is. As far as I know, the first pie vents hit the scenes around the 1880s.

My great grandma was born in 1870 and died in 1970 when I was 10 years old, she had a lot of these things, my whole family did.

Amazing finds! I’d love to see a video of before and after of the bottles you find. Dirty to clean. Amazing work your doing uncovering americas past. Maybe a Dr lived there. Might explain all the medicine bottles.
Every time I watch one of these videos it makes me think "if this is what you find in just one dig, there must be many more troves of bottles that are missed and still waiting to be found across the country". These digs must be just a fraction of what is buried below the surface.
Not just bottles my friend! In June there was 700 civil war era gold coins stumbled upon and dug up in KY. The amount of caches found by accident alone fills the old newspapers to the tune of thousands of articles. And those are the ones that we know about. People think treasure they think chest of gold coins in the ocean or lost mines in the southwest. I think a mason jar a quarter of the way filled with gold coins in some old farmers field. Granted they aren’t easy to find but they are out there and there are thousands still waiting to be found.
@@legacyXplore Yes, you're right - it's more than just bottles! I did see the article about the people who dug up their kitchen floor and found hundreds of old coins worth millions of dollars. It would be great to find such a trove but as you say they're not so easy to locate.
In the old days you composted out of necessity because your garden required the nutrients returned to the soil to continue to be productive so only the broken household items or discarded containers were then tossed into the outhouse. Today, these places hold numerous old bottle and other items from past times, not found in many other places but you just have to remember what your digging in.
That “yawning” figuring has a halo and is singing. Maybe part of a Christmas display?
