it's from the unit circle; the cosine of an angle on the unit circle gives you the x-distance, and sin of an angle on the unit circle gives you the y-distance. same principle here, but for example, if the angle you're using to split the vector is on the upper side of the vector (i.e. not between the vector and x-axis, but between the vector and the y-axis), you would simply flip the functions. thus, the x-value would be FsinTheta and y would be FcosTheta
