I'm curious. Do you speak/read Chinese fluently? I rarely hear people speak about Japanese people without using the pejorative "小" (small) in front. 小日本人. Basically little J*ps in English. Even professors casually use such language in lectures. One guy even told me they aren't human! On Weibo I've seen people say that black people aren't human, so hating us isn't technically "inhumane." That said, I still live traveling in China because of my interest in calligraphy and poetry. Personal safety is not much of a concern though I was robbed once in Beijing. One only experienced,2 overtky racist incidents over the past 20 years of traveling. I want there during COVID though, when anti-black racism was over the top. One black guy even died after being rejected from several hospitals. Many were evicted from their homes and barred from public places. Like Jim Crow visits Asia. That was despicable. Post-COVID China seems back to normal, except for the occasional lady that will adjust her face mask when she sees a foreigner.
I'm regards to discussions regarding the US, I found sentiment more hostile during the Trump years, when the trade war was in full swing. Now I most hear stuff like "China has (insert good thing) and the US doesn't. I find it annoying but harmless.

小 means most Chinese still remember what the Japanese army brutally murdered and made thousands of genocides in the war. Chinese people are been educated to remember that. This is not uncommon for example if you can compare it to other nations' soldiers who struggled for WWII or traumatized. Chinese people couldn't forget that especially the Japanese government and their people are still rejecting and trying to misinterpretating and smashing all the pains and crimes their ancestors committed. Totally you can just label it "patriotism" or some kind of "nationalism". Good universities need to be ranked in the top 1%, while top universities need to be ranked in the top 0.1%. I have been studying dialectical materialism since childhood, from junior high school to high school. I think we have been greatly influenced by dialectics since childhood, which is part of the "political" exam. There is a course called politics in both middle and high school.

  • @artistzora
    @artistzora 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +79

The Chinese have an old saying: 'Without rules, there is no square and round.' In this context, 'rules' represent laws, while 'square and round' signify freedom. There is no absolute freedom in this world; freedom can only exist within certain boundaries. Otherwise, extreme freedom would undermine itself, much like the situation in the United States today, where robbery and crime have become commonplace. Even more perplexing, there are now over 100 recognised genders, which seems quite bewildering to Chinese people. Why can't Americans differentiate between genders and personalities?
China is deeply influenced by Confucian culture, which values balance and harmony, and sees everything, including freedom, as relative. In contrast, Western culture often pursues extremes. Westerners frequently criticise China for its lack of freedom of speech and the inability to criticise the government freely. However, Chinese people do enjoy a considerable degree of freedom of speech. Although the government has a strict censorship system, it cannot completely prevent people from expressing their views. As long as your speech and actions don't aim to divide the country or overthrow the regime, you can generally say what you want. This is evident on the Internet, where the government quickly responds to public concerns if the criticisms are valid. China's rapid development in recent years has led to fewer voices criticising the government, not because we can't, but because the government has genuinely earned the people's support through its achievements. If the government has done nothing wrong, why should we criticise it?
No system or country is perfect. Even Americans, who pride themselves on their freedom, now invent euphemisms to avoid censorship. China is certainly not as terrifying as portrayed by Western media, but it's also not as developed as some bloggers claim. China is a developing country; some parts are more advanced than the West, but many areas lag far behind. We are continually learning and progressing while seeking to establish friendly relations with the world. The West's fear of China is unnecessary. Cooperation is the only way to solve global problems because this planet belongs to all of humanity, not just one part of it.

The right to criticize government is very important, because politics are shape the lives of millions people (or billion in case of China). If there isn't, if ruling class makes mistakes, then they could just brush it off, not take accountability (which they did a lot of times, which cost million of lives).

In fact, many people don't know that China really has an election system.
China's election system starts with the lowest level of institutions, that is, the so-called neighborhood committee leaders or village heads in rural areas. This election is the voting right that ordinary citizens can use. This is the first level of election.
Then, these people who are elected from the first level will be called representatives (you can understand them as city councilors) and are eligible to enter the city-level parliament (AKA City People's Congress), that is, they have the right to vote and elect. From this time on, the right of ordinary citizens to vote is used by these people.
The city-level parliament elects the provincial parliament, the provincial parliament elects the National People's Congress, and finally, the National People's Congress elects various important national positions. This is the election process stipulated in the Constitution of the People's Republic of China.
However, the difference between this election and the Western election is that you cannot conduct election speeches or raise funds. This is the general process and method of China's election.
At the same time, although China is a one-party dictatorship, you must understand a fact, that is, even the so-called one party actually has many factions. These factions also have their own power and interests, and the positions of the President and the General Secretary of the Party are actually the result of discussions and compromises among the factions. There is an institution called the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which is the core of the entire Chinese leadership.
So, in fact, from a certain perspective, China and the United States are essentially the same. In the United States, you seem to be able to choose between two parties, but in fact, the basic national policies of the United States implemented by these two parties are similar, and there may be some differences in the details. In China, one party implements China's national policies, and then handles the details within the party.

We all know China citizens can lodge any government complaint to the Prosecutor Office. If the complaints are substantiated the office will cause a lot of trouble to the officials to address the issue.
Now with social media so popular in China, and Xi Jinping so serious about his management team, any story about government complaints viral on media will already cause the Prosecutor Office to pro-actively trigger an investigation causing the officials to be sacked. You just need enough facts to substantiate your claims, and they'll find out the responsible parties. This is really keeping all government officials on their toes to deliver, and not to have missteps.

To shed some light for the hosts about Chinese public voicing out frustrations and criticisms. It was never illegal to voice out or complain, that assumption is caused by the deluded west who tries to make China sound that way. Chinese people had been doing that forever, there is always a bottom line on what is acceptable but as long as it's within the law you can do whatever and it's hard to cross that line unless you drawing attention by being extremely toxic and disruptive to the public peace. It's not that you can't say anything about Chinese leadership, it more about credibility. Firstly and culturally it's disrespectful unless it is a serious issue. Secondly, you have to be extremely credible because the president of China is much respected and has achievements on a different level. The public is more likely to ask critics "What have you done for the country?". They would sound pretty stupid otherwise after all... China is a government for the people, so all constructive criticisms are considered. Chinese don't hate anyone but we do think America is hostile towards China. That does not equate to hate, it is just about being educated and well informed.

It's only true because Chinese in the states rarely communicate bad things back home. Also many of the 2nd gen kids def wont, and maybe can't even communicate to people in China because can't speak/read/write . There's a level of ignorance that permeates and people in China still see the US as just wealthy. Also if they are wealthy Chinese, the wealth buys them the lifestyle they see on screen and insulates them from the hate for the most part.

I think the number is actually less than before. I think a lot of Chinese nowadays, since Xi, have become more nationalistic and proud of their country, no less in part due to the great technological advancements that have taken place in the last 10 years that have greatly improved Chinese people's general quality of life (namely the technological advancements with WeChat, smart devices, and online mobile services). And a lot of Chinese people think that the US is technically a more dangerous country to live in rather than in China (particularly with the rise of shootings, that arguably I think could be sourced to the Sandy Hook school shootings in 2012, for instance, and the divisive political climate on the streets since the 2016 presidential election).
Nowadays, I think Chinese are more interested in visiting US or living short-term. But not to live there long-term or to raise a family.

The fear is actually not towards the CCP government. More fear about taking an interview from foreign media, because a lot of well known foreign media will twist or cut what you said to meet their propaganda, and that was not what you meant at all. You could be a target because whoever saw that interview would think that was what you said. Suprise ah?
