In German we use the word "Krake" for octopus which is very much derived from the kraken. That it was associated with Greek mythology I was not aware though, it was always northern European folklore.
Also I think the symbol from that James Bond movie is the kraken because it stretches its arms out into everywhere.

I have a book on north mythology going into all the diffrent creatures there are, I just read about the kraken and, well, I never thought the pirates version would feel so small. The book features a quote from a swedish man who wrote a sentance or two in his book about the kraken. In the book he states it's small comparing it to a swedish island that is 137km long. That indicates that in some versions it's even larger, it also mentions it having a larger body with fins instead of just being an octopus. the tentacles was just for grabbing food and was hanging from the mouth of the beast, a bit like cthulhu. it was so big that it was often mistaken to be an island and it is said that some even went so far as to make a fire on top of the kraken before it noticed. it's droppings was good fish food and fishermen would often follow it to get lots of good fish, but when it went back down, a maelstrom would be created by it. The kraken liked eating people and it's also said to from time to time eat whole fishing fleets.
if you bothered reading this, thank you and as I am Swedish I can tell you that the translation would be octopus, not squid.

The creepy fact is here’s scientific evidence to support the kraken, with the bodies of giant and colossal squid in the ocean and it’s unknown how big it is. And ho nows how big they can get.

I found this mini documentary VERY interesting. I was able to purchase a T-shirt wth a Murderous Kraken ascending upon a hapless Schooner - It depicted, primarily, the tentacled arms of the Creature attacking the boat but it’s a very cool T-shirt nonetheless! One of my favorite Cryptid type of items in my Collection. :€)

"There's a beast does the bidding of Davy Jones - a fearsome creature with giant tentacles that'll suction your face clean off, and drag an entire ship down to the crushing darkness. The Kraken. They say the stench of its breath is...[shudders] Imagine... the last thing you know on God's green Earth is the roar of the Kraken, and the reeking odour of a thousand rotting corpses... if you believe such things."

You didn't mention the book Dwellers in the mirage by Abraham Merritt. This fantasy novel is so beautiful, you cannot but be entirely mesmorized by the characters and the magical green of the underworld realm ruled by goddess Khalk'ru with a Kraken sigil. When I finished this book I cried, I wish it never ended so I could be forever in that mirage. Believe me I was there when I was reading it, I saw everything. It was magical. If there's any of you who haven't read it yet, please do, you won't be sorry, I promise you!

There is a Swedish author that had the kraken described from a couple of norwegian fishers and in his bok from 1781 and acording to him the kraken is around 130 kilometers or 80 miles long. Arpund the same sice as the island of Öland on the eastern kost of Sweden.
