Hi. So pleased you are starting to react to Barclay James Harvest. I have been a fan of theirs for many years. I remember seeing them in concert way back in the 1990's. They were amazing live. They performed Mockling Bird as well as some of their other classics such as Chikld of the Universe and one of my favourites Play to the World. They never achieved the status I thought their talent deserved but always had a core loyal following. Many Thanks Gerald

My all time favorite band i have listened to them all my life. I first saw them in a pub in London in 1976 and have enjoyed their music ever since. Les Holyrod added a new dimension to the band. They were very popular in central Europe, not so much in the UK which i always found strange. So glad you have discovered this amazing band

Hey Gerry! Great to know they are your fave and I can see why, just based on 2 songs. I should probably hear something from Les's version of the band, as well as their much older work. Glad I found them too and look forward to much more. Thanks for tuning in 😊

Wow….another rabbit hole you’ve found. I’d never heard of them before, but I’m sure I’ll be hearing more from them!! Definitely heard that cornet in the first song. Thought it was a flugelhorn at first until you mentioned the cornet. Not as bright sounding as the trumpet….I started out on the cornet in middle school band before I had my first trumpet. Happy Sunday my friend….here’s to another great week ahead! 😊

Oh wow! That's surprising. I guessed you'd know some of their music at least, if you hadn't seen them live. I must have known just the name, because they were mentioned a handful of times in my comments. Nice, you played the cornet as well! Happy new week....something different this week over here, and of course next stop on Patreon, looks like a Simon & Garfunkel full album 😀

They have a song called "Poor Man's Moody Blues" that actually does sound like the MBs. BJH has a vast catalog, and they're a rabbit hole worth exploring. I hope you do.

First time hearing these for me, both wonderful but I think "Star Bright" is my favorite! 👌🥰 With "Star Bright", the end of the verses leading into the chorus have an almost exact melody of a very famous song that I can't recall and it's driving me nuts! (maybe after breakfast I'll be able to pull it out of the depths of my memory?) And then the ending instrumental section is slightly reminiscent of one part of the song "The Court of the Crimson King" off of the first King Crimson album, also The Strawbs a bit too.

Nice, love SB as well, dark enough, beautiful and that Floyd section! 😍 That melody sounds familiar but can't quite place it either. Guessin they weren't as huge here in the US as they deserved to be....

@@retroreactions.... I think Barclay James Harvest was pretty popular in the US because their name is very well known to me but for what ever reason I never bought their albums or went to their concerts? (LOT'S of stiff competition for a budding musician's attention in the early 1970's! 😅)
OK, breakfast to the rescue, maybe?! I think that ascending melody in "Star Bright" sounds similar to the main line in Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love"? Also, "Mocking Bird" has just the slightest of similarities to Dan Fogelberg's song "Longer"? Please let me know if you concur or if I'm crazy! 😁

I very much concur with the Elvis reference, I hear it. I also heard Longer in 1 of the guitar parts. But I swear sections are very much reminding me of S & G's Scarborough Fair...I want a mashup of the 2 songs!!

Heehee Barclay James Harvest even had a little fun at their reputation with their song Poor Man's Moody Blues. Wherein they added some touches of Nights In White Satin th-cam.com/video/5F8ekYH54rk/w-d-xo.html

Thank you, great band. Mocking Bird has several versions from the late 60s and early 70s. Check out the "official" recording on their second album Once Again, which I think is the most beautiful one even though this version is also good. It's their greatest song but the band has so many great songs like Hymn, Poor Man's Moody Blues (yes! This "parody" is better than the original song), Berlin, Streets of San Francisco. For a full album check out Gone to Earth!
They were often compared to Supertramp and the cassette tapes I got in my school time often had one band on one and the other on the other side. But they are different as imo BJH is more rooted in folk and classical music and Supertramp in jazz and rock. I would compare BJH with Moody Blues :), Procul Harum, and Alan Parson's. Supertramp is more like Chicago, Styx, and Kansas in their approach.
BTW if you like Star Bright, try once Chris de Burgh's Revolution Trilogy, I guess you would love it - all parts are different but move into each other and the coda is a slow building up ambient symphonic rock piece.

IMO the original is better. Had the album way back when first released. Probably still have it in some corner of the attic. Derided as lightweight proggers at the time but the wrote some nice melodies.

Poor man's Moody Blues?? I not only disagree, I hate that. Two different styles and vibes. Great video, though. 🥰💙🎵🎶🎶🎶

Not the best of BJH......The original version of Mocking Bird is king (though the '74 live version is also great) - this overthought version gets too complicated and messy towards the end, and is not as tight...'Star Bright' is okay, but not a patch on much of their prime, early to mid-70's material. They lost their way when Woolly left in the early '80's. I'm glad though that I saw him one more time in John's version of the band before he sadly took his own life.
