I hear some people say that, but to be honest I don't see it on any large scale. There is a small area I'd consider "hood." However, the rest of the city ranges from decent or "regular" to very wealthy enclaves in the north end and a few other places. Any moderately sized city has some crime and less desirable areas than others, but as a whole its hard to see New Rochelle as the ghetto. If so what is Mt Vernon then? People pay alot more, to live in a lot worse places than New Ro. I think some ppl look down on New Rochelle b/c its in Westchester and they are comparing it to places like Bronxville and Scarsdale. By that standard most of America is the hood. (To be fair many parts of New Rochelle compare to those towns anyway.) The reality is many sections of New Rochelle are really competing with Yonkers, Mt Vernon and some eastern Bronx neighborhoods, in that class the city easily holds its own. (Those other locations have nice places as well.)
Rent is already insane. Cant get a studio for less than $1300 in a lowend building. Alot of people are now rooming together to be able to afford housing.

Grew up there ....Graduated high school 1964. The city , today, is so different. Don't like the city of today. Too " rich".....I'm sure there is poverty , but cannot begin to imagine where and what it looks like.

retail doesn't exist in new rochelle. just a bunch of restaurants that come and go so fast, most of them being Hispanic.
It's now January 2023 .... I would love to see how far these proposed projects have come. Particularly the new Hotel.
