- Strong, easy, AND cheap? Surely that's a typo! As it turns out, lunchbox lockers don't have to be a compromise on strength, and they can actually get even easier to install! TORQ Masters Industries has been developing their TORQ Locker design for use in more and more axle applications, and we had a chance to test out their newest addition, the TORQ Locker for the Chrysler/Jeep 29 spline 8.25 rear axle. Being a C-Clip axle this is a bit of a variation on the installation found in say a Dana 30 or Dana 44 application. We've been super impressed with the functionality of the locker, stick around to the end for a review on wet and dry on-road handling, and some serious off road testing.

That was a nice video. I love the easy install and you drove on wet pavement right away which answered those issues having a locker on street roads in those conditions. That one little mud hill my XJ would not have been able to do that so I’m going to look into this more. I also did not hear any loud clicking noise during the video.

Installed a powertrax Lock right in my 1999 Durango with 91/4 diff. So far it has been a fantastic upgrade. There is a spec on the c-clip axle I missed when reading the manual which require me to take it back apart after hearing binding noise on right turns. Simple fix. So far rode manners are fantastic, works best when you coast tight turns. But other then that I drive it like normal. Haven’t had a chance to off road it yet just some mud stuff and it did great. The wife drives the truck and doesn’t even notice it.
Trucks on 32” with 2inch lift.

Wow this is what I been wanting to hear about. We live in the NW mountain as above the snow line and have a year round challenge on the trail up to our cabin. Many challenges. Actually right now we are snow bound.Groan.

Nice Vid! I wish I went with the TORQ instead of the Powertrax No-Slip w/ all it's extra parts, could have saved $$$ and probably wouldn't have noticed much of a difference... First time I drove a Jeep with a rear lunchbox I thought it was gonna be a nightmare due to internet comments like "random lane changes". I have noticed thought, breaking into turns has a similar effect as accelerating out of turns (locking/ unlocking), makes sense if you think about it. Now that I've had 2 different lunchbox lockers in the rear of my XJ, (Spartan then Powertrax) they seem to both behave very similar; great on and off road... A friend of mine said "I wouldn't have even known there was a locker in it if you hadn't told me", after driving it. They're not as bad as people make em out to be. Definitely noticable in the snow but just barely (I don't know anything about front autos on-road and in snow but I feel like it wouldn't be that bad)

I run a torque masters front Aussie locker in my d30. After making that upgrade, it's the most important upgrade I've ever made. Not to mention the price is so fricken slow, there's no excuse not to have one. Nobody can touch these for the price, and it's quality made USA parts AAAAND their customer service is incredible. I hit them up for a lot of clunking noises, and they handed me to a professional differential expert that sent me photos, diag points, and offered a warranty if nothing else would fix it. Go get you one and lock it up 🤟🏻

Man, I love those action shots of the XJ, Jon. The wheels and tire carrier really set it apart. I do have to say I have reservations regarding getting a lunchbox locker for my Ranger. I daily it for fun and work and I don't care about clicking noises, but I do not want a bunch of hopping or any binding. Any extra opinions and experiences beyond the tests in the video are welcome.
I do feel like it's likely a bit of a different scenario running one in a pickup truck. I have no experience with that setup but it seems the back end being lighter would play into some less desirable handling characteristics. Unless of course your truck is set up that it is more balanced with a constant load in the bed, I'm not sure. I still have not had a chance to drive it on snowy/icy roads (unfortunately was out of town last time we had snow coming down) but I have had it in deep off road snow and it behaved exactly as anticipated, no surprises. I'll be sure to run out and shoot a little segment to post on Instagram at the first opportunity!
@@DRTJon The difference in it being a pickup was one of my concerns, yes. I guess I'll have to do a bit more research before I pull the trigger. I'll post my findings on here for the benefit of anyone else reading this with the same concerns for a pickup.

The lunchboc locker (Spartan) I installed in my ZJ has been one of the best upgrades I have done next to the lift and tires. It does great off-road. It is a little noisy, but this is a trail Jeep. The only bad thing about the Dana 44a is the lack of locker options, so its either lunchbox or ARB.
its only noisy because NO LOCKER INSTRUCTIONS ever tell you to use red axle grease and grease the entire assembly BEFORE you install it.... centrifugal force would dictate that the axle gear oil will NEVER get to the center of the locker... so it never gets any lube... LUBE IT WITH AXLE GREASE! I HAVE 10,000 MILES ON A SPARTAN AND IT IS SILENT, WHEEL LOCK TO LOCK TURNING AROUND ON A DIME, NO CLICKING OR CLANKING.

People like to dog the lunchbox, but I loved mine in the Dana 30 ran it for 6+ years before I started my axle swaps!
Recognized the stretch of 61 you were driving as you closed out your video. I live about 5 minutes from there. Would love to go wheeling sometime if your going up that way again. Looked like maybe the St. Clair area? I'm running open diffs at present, so some of what you were on would be a challenge for the Bumble Jeep. Hoping to get lockers installed soon. You should always use locktite on that pin bolt that holds the carrier shaft in place. They’re known to back out and cause havoc!
Matt (from Utah) has more trouble with ring gear bolts. bwahaha When they fell out it almost made him cuss.

The c clips definitely can be frustrating to install; just wait til you have to take them back out!
Are you running stock shafts in the rear? I haven’t upgraded yet but the 29 spline 8.25 has held up to being locked on 35s for me...

Hopefully my F-250 will get a lunchbox locker out back sooner than later. The insight of this video was very helpful both from the installation aspect and the driving characteristics side. I'm cheap as can be and will probably go the most affordable route I can but options are a bit limited for my big truck.
I had an Aussie locker in the front (D30) of my TJ. Loved it. I don't think I would install a locker in the rear unless it was selectable because of the tire wear.
Did you not get the same tire wear in the front?

I was one of the first ones to get the TORQ Locker when they came out. Threw it in my TJ’s D30 and wheeled the heck out of it. They perform just like an e-locker or air locker while the Jeeps in 4wd, and only “ratchet” in 2WD if the steering wheel at full lock. I wouldn’t recommend having one set up in the rear since the rear is always under power and will result in some strange driving characteristics. I enjoy the videos you put out and love your TDI XJ!!
grease it first and you won't ever hear it.
Grease is only used for initial set up of the locker and will get washed out by the axles gear oil. Running a higher viscosity gear oil, a thicker cover, or turning your radio to max blast are the only ways you’ll combat the ratching noise.

Pull the carrier out and see for yourself. And I fail to see how you having a TH-cam channel and only putting 20,000 miles behind the wheel of your Jeep translates into any credible knowledge. I do this for a living and have an understanding of how components are engineered and the way they operate. If you feel like your 400+ videos that average 50 views each make you a professional then I’m sorry for anyone who mistakes them for having any merit. In all honesty do you have any mechanical experience or do you just get your knowledge watching someone else do the work on TH-cam and then just regurgitate that information? Next time I’m in the market of having my Cyber Truck LS swapped on BeamNGdrive I’ll be sure to contact you. 😂

I always wondered how these unlock. It looks like the side to side movement of the axles when going around turns actually does it unlocking the outside tire. On c clip axles anyway. and the cross shaft pressure keeps it locked in under load
They do not truly unlock. They ratchet when there is a differential in wheel speed.
I installed one 20 + years ago in my Toyota made by Detroit called a lok-right I still drive it daily

A 4x4 without lockers is a 2 wheel drive when you need 4 wheel drive the most.

Great video John! Thanks for making this!. I was planning on getting a Detroit truetrac for my 8.25. But after watching this I’m thinking I might get this torque locker instead. If you pop a wheel in the air. Do you think this torque locker will perform like a Detroit truetrac and not really work unless you add a bit of E brake on the rear wheels?
Also can you please tell me what width are your steel wheels that you run with your 33 x 10.5” wide bfg tires.
I currently have 15x8 alloy wheels. And 32 x 11.5 bfg at Ko tires. But my next set I’m thinking of going to 33 x 10.5 bfg at ko2 tires. I currently air down to 13-14psi when off road and have never had any issues with popping a bead with the 11.5 wide tire on an 8 wide rim. Do you think I could still go down to 13-14”psi with the 10.5” wide tire on the same 8” wide rim? That’s my only concern/deciding factor with going to the 10.5” wide tire. (My alloy wheels are not beadlock wheels).

Hey Russ, I know for a fact from experience that the TORQ lockers continue sending equal power to both wheels like a true locker if one wheel comes off the ground.
The wheels I’m running are 17x7 and tires are 285/70/17 (33x10.5 like you said). I usually air down to 15 and haven’t lost a bead yet.

I think I will re gear to 4:56 in my Jeep. With it being the 4.0 and it’s an automatic. And next tires at 33” tall.
@@russjowett2137 a 4:30 is what I'm looking for . I have 33's and the 4.0 in my wj. I might have to buy some viper gears . They share the same center section as the wj. Not too sure if it's a perfect swap or not .
In the video I didn't notice the loud clicking noise on turns normally associated with these types of lockers. You mention you didn't notice the ratcheting noise in your comments. Now that you've driven longer with it, do you hear the loud clicking (ratcheting) sound when you turn on pavement? Does it make the sound more on dry pavement versus wet?
I don’t hear it over the diesel LOL. I can hear it if I listen for it the only sound I ever notice when not specifically listening for it is tire bark

There seems to be a few different branded versions of these. In Australia, they advertise Aussie Lokka.
I'm thinking of put one in my front diff - which is an open diff. My rear diff is a LSD. The lokka would only be engaged when I engage 4wd.
This is exactly my aetup. Front Aussie locker, sloppy lsd rear.
Im about to put an 8.25 into mine and contemplating a locker for it too.
The front bangs under part load when steering which I believe is normal but the clicking when free-wheeling is much softer and not a problem.
Just nervous that its gonna bang in the rear too

After bout two weeks have you hit any harder trails and if so how do you like it ? Another question is what is your exhaust setup on your jeep it sounds good!
I’ve hit some much harder trails, lines I never would have attempted or made before and it performs great. In my next video you’ll get to see some more crawling action. Exhaust is 2.5” with nothing but a MBRP 16” resonator between the turbo and tail pipe.
is your jeep a daily driver or just take it out during snow and mud? I'm working on my moms XJ 1990 jeep lerado with 8.25 rear that is a daily driver . I was thinking of a limited slip especially for tight cornering
I daily drove it for about 40,000 miles but now I just use it for adventures. Still a lot of road driving with that though! I don't know that I'd put an auto locker in my Mom's Jeep though.... it does change driving characteristics a bit and someone who doesn't care about the benefits of a locker might not like it. Hey I have a 99 keep Cherokee xj that has stalling issues can you help me figure it out all ignition has been changed it’s a choking feeling on the throttle and eventually after turning it off for a few it kicks back on to drive. Also the whole fuel system has been replaced as well and it’s getting good pressure. No burning gas smell neither. Do you think my manifold gasket is cracked or a bad o2 sensor. Please let me know if you can.

Quick question before i place the order, u mentioned that for a daily is better to do it in the front, Would it destroy my mud tires since they front tires turn left and right all the time or would it be better in the rear since they dont turn as much??? And since im here, how do u like them skyjackers 8000? I need shocks asap skyjackers 8000 or max black?

Might be a dumb question. But what is keeping the c clips in? I know on the old gears there is a little channel they sit in and the cross pin cheeps them in place. But I didn’t see a channel on the new parts. Is it the same?

Ive had one in the back of my f150 for years, ford 8.8, its handled about 300,000 miles of towing, off road, and abuse. Still going.

So now you have one in the front and rear how much different is it on the road from the unlocked 30/8.25 combo? Great video!
You don’t even know the front is there in 2WD. The rear is only different under hard acceleration which is very minimal, and at low speed turning. With mine being a manual trans it will buck a little in 1st or 2nd at low speed if you’re not paying attention. To be perfectly clear: having the locker in the rear is definitely not the same as having an open diff. But it’s not annoying, loud, unpredictable or dangerous in any road driving situation I’ve been in so far.

Would you recommend it for a heavy (7000 lbs) van ? I'm going to re gear to 4.11 from 3.55 running 31 or 32 inch tires, should I consider another brand / type locker, budget minded ?
It will handle whatever you throw at it. It will probably be the strongest part on your axle.
Are 43” tires too much for a true track locker in a dana 60 high pinion front and a sterling rear ? What lockers would you recommend has to be streetable also
Truetracks aren't lockers, I would reccomend Detroit or Grizzly lockers for those axles and tires that big.

I'm in Harrisburg and have been to Rausch a few times. Always interested in finding people to wheel with. I'm not from the area and don't know anyone else who wheels around here.

My dad ran lock rites front and rear in his XJ, we came up to a red light with ice on one set of wheels and dry pavement on the other set..... it broke the heads off of almost every bolt holding the crown gear on! we turned around and went home lol
B.s, why would it break all the bolts off the ring gear? Did you guys change a gear set and did a little too many rat a tat tat's on the bolts with an impact?
@@69yenko65 nope, not sure why they let go. it was a lock rite in a D30, so the ring gear wasn't touched. It was a strange break and probably would never happen again.

Most people choose a front locker first. No clicking with daily driving, locker to help pull you over obstacles.

I have the same rear diff. I purchased the same locker from Torq and I noticed the thrust washers didn't fit so I tried dry fitting it after removing the gears and it wouldn't fit, it was to big. Any ideas?

Ahh you got an ABS model boo haha. I’m running 33x10.5 and 4.10. TDI puts down about 300 ft lbs under boost (1800-2200 RPM) and is also equipped with a doubler which gives the option of 7:1 low range

That’s odd, the only 01’s I’ve seen with D35 are ABS equipped so I always thought that’s why they had the 35 not the 8.25. Only in a Jeep!

@ Jon , do you have a video or any info on that doubler your running. The Torq locker will most likely go in my 99 upcountry (D30/8.25 Trak-lock) . The ox locker is a great product but hard to justify when the Torq is so well designed and covered for 4 years. Curious how the road manners are though with the lunchbox in the D30.

Great and inexpensive mod. There is no point in having a four wheel drive that is not four wheel drive.
I need to get lockers but don't want to put money into a Dana 35.
@@chadalcock7275 If you have no plans to go larger than a 35" tire, you can install a Super35 kit in the Dana 35 and have a highly reliable, locked rear end.

what front axle are you running John? did i spot locking hubs? have you driven the xj in snow with the lunchbox in the front yet? im in michigan obviously so snow performance is a biggie for me, i want all the traction i can get, but i dont want to feel that front diff, (ie) torque steer. im torn between the volvo g80 locker, a detroit locker torsen LSD, and a LB style locker, the LSD is about 150-200$ more than the lunchbox, the volvo is about the same $ or less than the LB style lockers depending on where you get one from.

Kinda new to lockers and what not. Is this setup all ways locked? Or does it lock under certain driving conditions or acceleration or something.
It is unlocked when coasting only. Any acceleration (torque input on the pinion) and it's fully locked. For me with a manual transmission I just put it in neutral or fully depress the clutch--as often as possible--when making tight turns on pavement. Off road I almost never wish it was unlocked.

Yeah would suck to kick it and lift the weight of the vehicle up with his foot without the shear pin shearing off releasing the jackstand
Any of the problems with lockers on the streets/highways when turning or hitting the gas like before? Are they just as noisy?
The driving characteristics are slightly altered overall, but my feeling is it is MORE predictable in every situation. It is just a matter of learning how it is different and adapting your habits. Not wrong or bad, just different.
Im curious how that front locker handles in the snow. I want to lock my front dana 44 in my yj, but im afraid of heavy understeer.
I got a front Aussie in my d30. It's pretty awesome, but unlocked it CAN break traction in the snow. It's not a garunte, but if it doesn't wanna ratchet it's gonna spin
@@Axle347 thanks man. Some are smoother than others on the street. I can unlock the hubs so 2wd is no concern but it's my deep snow vehicle. We get one occasionally around here.
@@jeepindave5464 all things considered, it's not bad in the snow. I know it's up there in 2wd, but overall it isn't noticable unless you're looking for it

Yes but you can only hear it from the outside with my diesel rattling LOL. I have had it pop loudly two or 3 times but that’s just it camming back in under load (after a hard turn on pavement)
I put one in the rear of my Wrangler and it feels like frame is twisting or wheel lifting when I take off from stop and when I shift gears on road

Hey quick question for you. I have a 99 xj on 33s. Its a daily driver with light trail use and also doubles as a beach buggy in soft sand. I was thinking of upgrading to a locker, or limited slip. If you were to upgrade, would you do the front or rear first? And what would you put in the axles?
I would probably suggest doing a TORQ or Aussie locker in the front. Your daily on road deriving will be unaffected, and if you get stuck in 2WD in the sand, popping it in 4 HI is basically guaranteed to get you out since BOTH front wheels will go to work pulling your vehicle.

@@carloshereaud5463 I don’t even notice the clicking. I have these lockers front and rear and have gotten very long wear on my tires. It does handle different than open diff but that’s not to say badly it’s just not identical. You get used to it, and it’s incredibly predictable which I like. I daily mine

Wish you would have shown it functioning (locking and unlocking) prior to putting on the cover while still on the jack stands.

Once installed, your axle is locked 100% full time. It does not truly unlock either, it just ratchets when there is a differential in wheel speed.
