"Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is the original title of a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. The work is commonly known today as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or simply Jekyll & Hyde. The story centers on a London attorney named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde.
This legendary story is commonly associated with the rare mental condition often referred to as "split personality". Also called "multiple personality" and referred to in psychiatry as dissociative identity disorder, it describes a state within which one person manifests more than one distinct persona. In this story, there are two personalities within Dr. Jekyll, one seemingly good - the other evil. The term "Jekyll and Hyde" is commonly used to refer to a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next.

Erdem Sebibucin - FYI: Some folks read as they listen... some listen as they drive or care for children, and some of our listeners are BLIND and are incapable of reading due to a physical handicap. Audiobooks are not the end of Western civilization...they're a way to keep it alive and spark new interest in literature. Feedback is welcome but this isn't a forum to insult our wonderful subscribers & listeners.

For me, finding audio books has been a Godsend, for whatever reason I don't find it as easy as I once did to totally get lost in a book. Probably bc I'm a grown up now and don't have anyone to bring me food or remind me of stuff that I've to do when I'm engrossed in a book, so having the ability to more or less choose whatever I fancy reading and having it read to me while I'm busy or at the end of the day when I'm in bed and ready to drift off is awesome and I'm sure it's the same for those who are disadvantaged due to blindness or something else.

On my first trip to sea we arrived at western Samoa. The fourth engineer, Alec, pointed to a hill and said, "Robert Louis Stephenson is buried there". A year later I was in Edinburgh, New Town, with my girlfriend Lynn. Being drunk, I managed to fall on my back. Bang. I turned my head and on a building was a plaque "Robert Louis Stephenson was born here". Funny old game innit.

For me as well that very much is history of man addicted to drugs.
Dr Jackyll first take drug to change to mr Hyde, but later on he need drug only to go back to normal. And he needs more and more of it. Untill it kills him.
Mr Hyde is small and weak, but do lot of damage. Dr Jakyll is tall and strong, and he fixes damage done by mr Hyde.
Mr Hyde doesn't control him self. Unless he need drug. Then sudenly he control him self and become smarter than dr Jackyll had ever been. And uses friends of dr Jakyll to get a drug. And making dr Jakyll losing friends in process.
Mr Hyde does things that dr Jakyll will never do, but secertly desire.
The only thing that maybe is symbolic is change of a body shape and face. But even that is not necessary symbolic.

Exactly. I myself write short stories that are sometimes published in small magazines and this reader, in my opinion, is reading the story in precisely the way that the author would have wished. In Victorian times many authors, as well as poets, considered the way their words would sound, not just how the they would appear on the printed page, and even tried to dictate the way in which the reader would hear those words in his mind, so as to create a sort of dialogue. You could almost say this is Stevenson’s voice, although he probably had a Scots accent.

I very much enjoyed it. I had trouble reading on my own so I went looking for the audio and came across your video and with my teachers summary I was able to pause each time and truly absorb the situation, the difficulty jeckyll was facing. His belief that two entities exist within one, good and bad. He dreamt of tearing the two apart pleasing both sides but sparing only one (the better half jeckyll) from judgement of society. What started out as an adventure to escape the ties and responsiblity of Dr. Jeckyll quickly turns into a suicidal nightmare as Mr. Hyde spiral's out of control. One could easily compare it too a drug addiction, and with each dose Mr. Hyde grew stronger and was able too, at will, leave the confines of his own prison inside Dr. Jeckyll. In books such as Dracula the monster is killed and society is saved. But what happens when the monster is inside of us? In the end good and evil were only one in the same; unsure of how to resolve the situation Dr. Jeckyll took his own life to slay the monster within.

@@stephywesp be careful though because it was Hyde who killed himself not Jekyll. Otherwise he'd have been hanged. Jekyll disappears because without the drug, Hyde has taken over and he can't get the ingredients for the drug (the salt is no longer available because it was impure).
Also.... Jekyll is Not the "better half"!! Jekyll invented Hyde because he wanted a consciousness, Guilt free existence where he could act out his disgusting fantasies without experiencing any of the consequences.
In short, Jekyll is a psychopath. Hyde is USED by Jekyll, that's why Jekyll calls him "my benefactor in his will.
Hyde is, legally speaking, the equivalent of a hit man hired by Jekyll.
There is also plenty of evidence to suggest that Jekyll is a textbook narcissist. He's arrogant, interpersonally exploitative, has a sense of entitlement, grandiose and lacks empathy. All traits of NPD.

This was one of the first classic literature books I had ever read which led me down a rabbit hole of Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights ah what a time to be in during these books first publishings. I bet these books blew the minds of many.

    • @jonahcryer6844
      @jonahcryer6844 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Considering Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and (to some extent) Pride and Prejudice were all deviations to polite society. In their own ways, each novel rebelled against the upper crust of Regency and Victorian England. Readers were very bewildered at Wuthering Heights in particular. Many called it savage and depraved. In our time, the subject matters of these books are quite common place. Truly different times entirely.
